Labour Day training follow up

Credit where credit is due.

We emailed the Club about our disappointment with the whole experience back on Labour Day. Today the kids received a package with a hand written letter from Nathan Jones apologising that they didn't get any autographs or photos with the players. Included were beanies, badges and Nathan's autograph. I can tell you right now, when the 2 of them get home from school, they will be die-hard demons again in a second. Fair effort for the captain of our club to do this, could have quite easily got a junior player onto it.

Well done MFC and Nathan Jones in particular, turned a negative into a huge positive for 2 kids.

Actually, some research conducted by Motorola back in the 1970s or 1980s (sorry, but I can't find it) found that customer retention is higher among people with an initial negative experience who are subsequently satisfied by the efforts of the provider of the product to fix the problem. It's why many companies provide extended warranties and great customer service centres.

I'm not saying the MFC is that strategic and stuffed up the Labour Day training session deliberately, but the good news is that those who receive the apology may become more dedicated supporters than if they had gone to a training session which had proceeded as it should have.

The amount you are adding your expert comments and convincing everyone you are right tells me you have a lot more than 2 seconds to waste, it's people like you that bring this board down with constant negativity.

Hopefully the club doesn't lose touch and forget how much these little things can mean to kids. Sometimes, it can be just a small thing like this which will make a kid a supporter for life.

I got given a Nottingham Forest flag when I was a kid, and have supported them ever since, and let me tell you, it has been every bit as testing as supporting Melbourne.

Many of us thought the Labour Day fiasco was a missed opportunity to take advantage of a perfect day to put the MFC brand out there when so many had the day off. I didn't buy in on the cost it would have been to do a 'mini' gala day for its supporters,that just sounded like a cop out, when long term it would pay off ten fold. It would have been a perfect lead-in to the Family day at Luna Park.Lets hope they take the negative and learn from the outpouring of complaints and suggestions from their supporters and learn to do it better. We move on, they copped their fair whack at the time,rightly so. But its now in the past.

To be fair, lets NOT forget all the good things they do, some we never hear about. Its not all bad, we DO acknowledge the MFC when we hear a feel-good story.

I recall the little girl they sent Jack Watts a Dollar? to re-sign, then she got to meet her hero.

The lttile boy, who's dad called the club and the Nat Jones and a few players, went out of their way to give him the best birthday he had ever had.

The father was god-smacked.

Then their was American Demon? who signed up and was given more they he ever expected.

When the supporters do speak up they listen, if we fail to bring it to the clubs attention that we expect better, how will they know where in what areas they need to lift their game. I think the PR Dept got the message.

The Moral is: We are passionate about our club, as passionate supportrs that passion flowed out. But they can be forgiven,and rightly so.

If you re-read my post I was very positive about the response that m'kaay received. I thought it was terrific.

That's good to hear then. As I mentioned in my first post I thought it was terrific that the club got on the front foot and put it right. As m'kaay said his kids will be stoked with what they get and they will get right behind the club, which is what we want.

When the club has been as unsuccessful as Melbourne, the little things become so much more important to maintain some attachment, emotional or otherwise to the club, especially with young supporters. I recently went to a training session with my two boys and after the session we approached some of the players for autographs on their shirts. All the players that were asked, signed the shirts with a smile and really engaged with the boys, asking them what they got for Christmas etc. The boys were a bit overawed but were really thrilled to be able to speak to their heroes. It really strengthened their attachment, hopefully it evolves into lifetime support (for the club anyway...). A lack of success may eventually see them drift, but at least in the meantime, they have engaged in the club. It makes it easier for me to convince them to go to the footy !

As for Forest, hopefully you were old enough to enjoy the European Cup success.....the potter in my name refers to Stoke...you think you had it tough ?

Unfortunately not, I started following in the 90's, saw a few seasons in premier league, but that is about it.

Actually watched Forest play Stoke at the City Ground about 10 years back now. That was a rough old crowd that one.

On the day, they tweeted the session was actually at 1pm, but this was too late for many families who turned up at lunchtime.

They also didn't want to spend money to set up a membership tent on the day, despite there being about 1,000 attendees to watch the training session.

No need to apologise Nasher, you are the moderator, I have no problem with you deleting mine, it will be popular among the more strident on here who I was just trying to reply to, who hope that the more noise they make will make whatever the noise is about true, at least Dazzle liked it

Howe, Vince and some of the training staff were there from about 12:30 pm, some kids enjoyed the chance to run laps with Howie and Bernie

There were approximately 300 people in attendance at the beginning, (media estimate not mine) this thinned a bit due to the later start, but only by a few

A lot of parents and kids who stayed for the later start took the opportunity to have a kick to kick on the paddock

It was decided that with the attendance of staff at Berwick Fair and the Chinese New Year, it wasn't worth the $1000 to set up a membership tent on the day, as the numbers who would attend would only be small in comparison to the 2 other events. A permit also has to be obtained

The Demon Army also provided a sausage sizzle and coffee, not the club, which was well patronised
