Interestingly enough, Buckley made the comment that '...premierships are won by your bottom six, not your top six....' alluding to the evidence that if every player does their role well, the rewards will come.

Interesting debate: Our bottom six? Bail? Jordie? M Jones? Col?

Thoughts?

Then we are not winning one anytime soon jr.

But that is hardly news I guess.

Not hard to pick our top 6 but picking the bottom six is another matter.

A big selection list to chose from.

Think you're being a bit over the top here. Sure he's more of an outside player, but its not like he's had zero contested possessions. You'll no doubt highlight several occasions where he has been pushed off the drop of the ball but I've seen him take plenty of contested marks.

I hope I didn't just open pandoras box here.

I think you need to read the statement again in context

Therein lies the whole problem od....too many to choose from.

What we need is a 'bottom six' that does its role....

I think OD that this is the area where we will make the most progress.

I think we will finish the season without a bonafide star but with more players that are of AFL standard.

If anything wakes H from his slumber it will be a discussion of the worth of the bottom six versus the top six.

I couldn't disagree more with Buckley. The Malthouse Pies in his early years contained a very thin list and some very average role players but they had star power. Buckley, Burns, Clement, Rocca, Tarrant and Didak were a pretty handy top six. Their bottom six was easily replaceable by similar standard players. McKee, Steinfort, Freeborn, Lonie, Cole, Lokan, Kinnear and Jason Cloke all played in their 2002/2003 grand finals. Even players like Wakelin and Presti were workmanlike and Holland and Johnson had flaws. Licuria and O'Bree were poor kicks. It was their stars that elevated them to grand final status.

Another draft or two before we have a good bottom six.

Another draft or two before we have a good bottom six.

I don't necessarily agree. We just need to get some game time into half of them (and/or have them recover from injury):

N. Jones

Tyson

Viney

Petracca

Brayshaw

Trengove (I hope!)

We also have Cross, Vince, JKH, Vandenberg, Neal-Bullen, Stretch, Newton, etc to add depth. Sure it will be nice to import a "gun" but we cannot keep using the excuse that we need 'another draft or two' when we have a good coaching structure now in place to develop our own. In the six that I have nominated, there are already four top three draft picks which is more than some teams can boast with the exception of the Suns and GWS. It is time for some self-belief rather than continually trotting out the same lame excuses because we already have the cattle and should not have to wait for a Dangerfield to come in to lift us!

Last time I am going to try explain my points to all.

The initial grammar comment I got quite simply as they say rubbed me up the wrong way.

I felt it was someone having a dig at me because of the way he said it.

Sometimes the internet has a way of making it look like your saying something you dont really mean or intend and I have only ever had that remark of check your grammar and so on (not an exact quote of what was said) put to me on the internet whenever someone is trying to start an argument youtube facebook great examples.

Especially with the arguments that have circled on here the last few weeks in particular a few f head and moron comments have been flown around everyone.

If that is not true and just a case of I say tomarto you say tomayto like miscommunication on MY behalf than I will man up and admit my bad took it the wrong way sorry mate jumped the gun wont happen again and were on our merry way yeh

Now I'm trying to be reasonable and non offensive so If the people involved want to reply please do the same If the opposite happens I will not log back in and waste time with a reply

and to sir paul roos topic starter sorry for my part of another topic derailer its a great topic idea and nice to have some positivity among our suffering supporter base as we have been for far to long and agree things ARE looking up

I can see where Buck's is coming from but 5-6 elite players also helps. Hawks/Cats/Swans and Freo all have 5-6 elite players. Yes Geelongs are getting on. Didn't Hawks have 8-9 AA this year or last? (Can't remember but my mate assures me they did).

We have Nate Jones, Tyson has the potential to become elite but I wouldn't say he is there yet. H....you could make a case but you get my point.

With regards to bottom six, I posted today in the "starting 22 round 1" thread about moving battlers on the list on in favour of young players with potential.

Must i be reminded of 2013?

Round 2 was the worst performance i have ever witnessed in AFL/VFL Competition.

It was a disgrace to all that the club was allowed to get anywhere near that level

Thankfully PJ accepted the invitation to clean the club out and literally start again.

And the worst part about it was they played Neelds pre game speech before the game, followed by a 148 point belting. Humiliating.

Agreed Al if you don't have that core elite six players you don't get to finish top four. The bottom six may make the difference in a grand final but the top six get you through the 22 home and always and the early finals to give you a shot at it. A good bottom six without an elite top 6 won't get you very far at all.

your ability to read the entrails is as flawed as your posting, col

Gawd. You really are pressed for entertainment options out there if you have to revert to slaughtering animals. I can just picture you now hiding in the bushes to ambush some poor possum or stray cat.

Who needs to slaughter animals anyway when spatilomancy is so much easier and more accurate?

KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
