I feel like it might be the most even flag race we've had in years. Sydney, Port Adelaide, Fremantle and Hawthorn (at full strength, anyway) are up there, and though Geelong's form is currently pretty poor, they're 8-3 and they've been written off before. Throw in Collingwood, who are also 7-3, plus the giant killer in North Melbourne (beaten Sydney in Sydney, Fremantle in Perth and Port Adelaide) and there's a legitimate 7-horse race for the flag.

Which of those clubs miss the top 4? Right now you'd say Geelong's not good enough, but if they finish 5th or 6th, who knows what they could do. Ditto North, who play their best against the best.

This comes up most years around this time. When the GF is run and won it's always seemed obvious who the premier would be. You can bet in the weeks leading up to finals that the media will again hype up teams outside the top 4 as legitimate chances, they aren't and never will be with the current finals system.

It was good to see the way Richmond responded to Rex Hunt's pre match warm up by following his example and emulating the great man's career. In the first half, they played tough football like the Tiger of old and in the second, they went fishing.

Quite amazing considering where each team sat after 22 rounds last year

Melbourne were in the football wilderness coming off a deplorable 2 win, 50% season and had no coach and no hope, while Richmond had gone a very impressive 15-7 and were warming up for an Elimination final

Now we have Roos, a very solid list and a team that competes hard each week

Actually on Sunday I was told (confidentially) that the Cats had pencilled in the 3 lossed before the season had started. The Swans loss was simply an abberation that happened. He conceded that Sydney do look like they are building a strong team. This 'insider' confidently predicted that the draw now opens up for the Cats and he figures on only 2 more losses between now and the end of the home and away. A Swans Cats grand final beckons apparently. No other team has the credentials I'm told. Hawks are done, Pies are not ready and Freo is too inconsistent away from Perth.

Apart from Season 2014 being just a 2 horse race the other key message for the football public is that Geelong will never bottom out, they will continue to be top 4 team for the foreseeable future as lifestyle (there's not much else to do down at sleepy hollow) and the plethora of outstanding local talent continues ad infinitum.

Anyway I thanked this Cats supporters for his pearls of wisdom and wondered what it would like to talk to a Dees support in 1963.....
