  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

It's fair to say - one thing Frawley has seemingly been especially loyal/committed to this year is not letting the club know what he intends to do at the end of the season.

I would've thought, by now, he pretty well knows whether he would like to leave or stay. And, if he doesn't, he really is not much more than a simple spud farmer.

So he's stupid?

Because he hasn't decided yet?

Or are you implying he is not stupid because he has?

Cloke and Boak - both in the stupid column...

I know there are players who have already 'signed'* somewhere else during the season, but the inference that that be applied to all who delay talks is pretty 'simple' - especially in the today's landscape.

*Contracts are essentially just a signal of intent, they are meaningless until the actual contract is signed at the end of the season.

It beggar's belief that a senior player who has been at the club for a very long time now does not know what he wants to do at the end of the season, so close to the end of the season.

It's either head in the sand stuff or he is fanatically following his player-manager's advice/script. Neither of which are particularly helpful to the club in the current circumstances.

I do, however, think certain posters here are stupid. How, one might reasonably ask, have I reached this conclusion without ever having met them?

Well, I have observed the way that they write, and appear to think, over a very long period of time.

In much the same way as I am able to observe the way in which Frawley conducts himself in interviews and the like, ie, through his conduct and what he says. I don't otherwise know the bloke - but it doesn't mean I can't form a view, and that such a view is without any legitimacy.

And the Boak re-signing is hardly comparable.

I was actually surprised anyone wanted to play at Port, even an amateur, after that season. It was a basket case.

That Port is now in the position it is, is ironically due to the leadership of the likes of Boak.

Hence, I probably wouldn't be using him as the poster boy for having one's club sweat on a required player's signature for the entire season. Port's situation differed greatly at the time, and Boak is clearly a leader who, despite Port's near insolvent/absolutely hopeless position, loved the club.

But then again, when you're desperately clutching at straws, you have to use any name you can cling on to.

Cloke?! Fair dinkum.

What about the list of senior players who have readily signed up to their respective clubs?

The list is long.

The point is that putting off talks until the end of the season does not automatically mean that a player is leaving. It can often be a strategy to get the best possible deal for the player. We saw that with Boak, Cloke, Pavlich etc. If you have multiple clubs bidding for your services at the same time near the deadline, it will likely increase the contract you will receive.

Each situation is unique. So while it increases the chances a player will leave, it is not necessarily the fait d'accompli that everyone is saying it is.

Matthew Pavlich. Just about every time he was out of contract.

Whilst i'll concede the validity from all reports Pav was NEVER going anywhere . This is about 180 deg to the likelihood surrounding Chip.

Yes, that is what I am saying - apparently I have offended Mr Burgundy to the point where I cannot give examples of players that have waited until their current contract is nearly up before signing the next one.

I am not going to read malice into actions that may be benign.

Kawhi Leonard was the Most Valuable Player in the most recent NBA Finals, he comes out of contract at the end of next season and he has until October 31 (3 days into the season) to sign a contract extension for July 2015 onwards. If he doesn't sign by then he will be a RFA in July 2015.

Essentially, if you didn't sign your player by the start of the season - the rules preclude you from extending his contract until he becomes a FA or RFA at the end of the season.

This is coming, and I welcome it.

More and more clubs are going to plan their free agent acquisitions very early on.

Frawley may well have already received an "In principle agreement" that he would find hard to knock back. He and his management might have decided to "play off" that possible deal and see what else comes their way.

Just speculating here as I'm not sure whether he's staying or going or whether he has received such an offer. I'd prefer if he stayed as I can see a future for him as a player who can play at either end of the ground for us. We have looked a better team whenever he has played forward for us (generally)

Look for him to shine in the last 5 games though.

because he can't sign a binding contract until fa period begins otherwise he (and whatever club) is in contravention of afl drafting rules

I meant, why would he wait until the end of the year to sign a contract with Melbourne.

the thing is the talks have not been put off until the end of the year they have been ongoing with other clubs. That's what's getting up everybodies nose.

Correct. He is refusing to talk to only one club, his own.

He would now have offers from a few clubs. If he wanted to stay, he would be telling the club what he has been offered and seeing what we can do.

HE IS GONE.

Oh, ok. I reckon he thinks he can get a substantial uplift in spondulaks plus a crack at finals and is willing to bet against a serious injury in the interim.

self interest before prudence? the hip pocket nerve? manager's strategy? all of that?

we'll never really know despite what he or others subsequently say

That's purely speculation, chook. He has put off contract talks until the end of the season. As has been said to death in this thread, people better start getting use to this FA paradigm.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
