I was there and heard every word. There was no 'potting' of the game plan per say. He simply instructed the guys to stop f*%#ing around with it at half back & going side to side - rather that he would back those players who took it on through the middle.

In the first quarter, it did seem that backwards or sideways was the natural inclination (i.e coached into them). But every game sees changes of tactics for countless reasons...and for someone to say this was Welsh potting the Melbourne 'game plan', then that's just Absurdityville, population: one crazy Demonland poster.

So it was someone's interpretation of the Roos game plan putting words into Welsh's mouth? He didn't actually say the Roos game plan but was annoyed with them not taking the game on?

That would make more sense, I couldn't understand him still being at Casey if he said what was reported.

Cant copy and past on my phone but this is from Bleasy as that from the round 1 game against essendon.

"The coach slagged the playing group for playing the 'Paul Roos game plan' high possession and maintaining the ball. It was interesting as I looked over at Jack Trengove who had a perplexed look on his face"

Direct quote from the coach please, or it's just the word of "Bleasey as that". As dependable as the interpretation of some bloke on the internet that I don't know is...

living with a Collingwood player? Yeah, you are right.

I'm Back. Song & BBO, please get a room. Don't want to listen to your crap. Can you PM each other your little loving comments and let the rest of us find out what went on at Casey today.

What chance Clisby into MFC next week? A player can only keep knocking on the door for so long unrewarded.

The Toump sounds like he had another good game too. When?

I think both these guys will need to bide there time. How good is this!

When he takes a game by the throat like Salem did in his last game for Casey before being promoted

Toumpas is motoring along but he needs to dominate a game or two

Is it possible that they were going side to side for the same reasons we did in the first few rounds.

No confident targets to kick to up the ground?

Melbourne get Dawes back and poof, no more side to side all day long

Bang on the money

let it go dazzle, there are those who don't wanty it said, as it may cause concern amongst the flock !!

I've heard him say the same sort of thing to a player the other year as well, bagging the Melbourne coaches gameplan, almost word for word to what you quoted. that time was against the current coach in Neeld.

has form.

but many here want to keep a lid on these things, so we better not lift that Lid. ;)

In case you missed it the initial comments were about ppl who who blindly what quote another poster has said and turn it in to gospel truth.

It may be true but quote from your own personal experience "I heard him say this at the 3/4 time huddle" not 'Welsh hates Roos' crap game plan and has form bagging the MFC' type of quotes because one poster says it. Pretty soon 3 or 4 posters repeat that and guess what?

You have now done a similar thing "I've heard him say the same sort of thing to a player the other year as well, bagging the Melbourne coaches gameplan, almost word for word to what you quoted. that time was against the current coach in Neeld.

has form."

When you attempt to assassinate someone's character best if you quote verbatim what you heard not repeat half truths, generalisations and now - you have added 'form'. 'Heard a similar thing against Neeld, therefore what one poster says about Welsh on Roos must be true.' And this was when 'a few years ago' - oh he has been doing it for a long time against multiple MFC coaches.

How about you give it a rest. FMD.

Weak. The old "no-one likes hearing the truth" line in another guise.

Nothing to do with it. (re)Read post above.

It's about there being some kind of veracity and accountability in what people report, even on an internet forum.

Too true ... The bush telegraph is out of control. All that's been presented has been someone's interpretation of what was told at a team huddle and it's something that runs counter to much of what Welsh has said and done publicly.

My observation is that over a long period through the Daniher and Bailey years our coaches worked on an attacking game plan which was a departure from that adopted by several of the more successful clubs of the past decade. The introduction of Neeld was supposed to add a more defensive edge and this failed.

Roos is starting to get the message across to the team but we know that this requires more skill and stronger, more experienced bodies. This is exactly why developing the same game plan is a more difficult assignment at Casey than it is at Melbourne. The Scorpions have the younger Demons and, apart from Panozza most of their VFL aligned players don't have the experience or strength of AFL players. Werribee had a number of bigger bodied stronger players who eventually wore Casey down. It's been a pattern for most of the season and, at times quite frustrating to watch.

If you think it's been tough over the past few years to take the transition required to become a team that plays the modern style of football at Melbourne then it's doubly so at Casey. Of course, the club might have kept the Magner/Couch types down there for another year and this would have certainly resulted in more wins, but exactly what would that have achieved?

Yep, I think one of Casey's biggest problem this season has been the exodus of experience and mature bodies, replaced mostly by kids not long out of the TAC Cup system.

Talented maybe, but only so much (none were even rookied) and it'll take them time to gain the size & experience.

Should be a long season for the Scorpions, unfortunately.

No one wants to keep a lid on it but would like an accurate quote not an interpretation.

I didn't right it down at the time jnrmac, & I didn't have a dictaphone with me out on the oval. when I heard it it stopped me in my tracks.

So I have told of my experience that I heard with my own ears.

If thats not good enough, then so be it. but that is what I heard !

Ok, did he name Neeld when he made the statement about the game plan? or did he say the Melbourne game plan? or did he indicate the style of game he didn't want the players to play?

I think as I recall, it was the Melbourne past & current gameplan, as the implication. at that time I took it as an attack on our Melbourne-fc's ways, including that current footy dept'.

I didn't necessarily disagree with him, but was shocked at his words aloud. that it seemed a divide in our footy dept thinking.

To clarify did he say something like:

"Stop playing that [censored] Melbourne game plan and take it up the guts"

Or did he say:

"Stop [censored] around and chipping it and kicking it around the boundary and run up the guts!"

similar I think... from memory it was more like a major putdown of the Demons gamestyle, just being derogatory of Dees gamestyle, & it seemed the ways of the club, was my interpretation.

it didn't seem to have a major point to it.

I didn't work on saving it in my mind, as I was thinking more about 'why' the attitude, & surprised at the condescension... of what I perceived to be the whole footy dept & club?

.... felt like it was meant to be just a putdown of the club, for some reason ? not angry about it, but was concerning to me.

You are just full of it.

I knew if people gave you enough rope you would hang yourself.

Welsh coached us last year. 2 years ago it was Brett Lovett.

Like you I remember someone making a post last year on this topic. Unlike you, I am not taking a memory of someone else and acting like it was mine....

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
