Final practice hit up for 2014 and what better opposition than the reigning premiers Hawthorn?

I rate Clarkson and Roos as the two best coaches going around ATM and I'm hoping this will be the precursor to a great rivalry. That may well be a little way off but I certainly hope they all do away with the "it's only a practice match" line because this is the last (well almost*) chance for players to stake their claims for a place in the opening round.

While it's true that it is only a practice match, the problem is that many of us said this last year when there were definite signs in last year's practice matches v St. Kilda and Gold Coast that things weren't right within the playing group. In reality, we couldn't ignore the fact that in last year's practice game at Casey, the team conceded eight goals to the Saints in a short space of time in the second quarter or that it meekly surrendered to Gold Coast after half time. These practice matches set the scene for our whole season.

I believe we can expect quite a few of the players who missed the trip to Alice Springs and went on tour to Gippsland instead to play against the Hawks including some of the vital key position talls and rucks who we missed on Friday night. The result of the game might be of no importance but who plays and the way in which it is played is vital to our prospects for the season because we need to make a good start.

* players who have missed the pre season matches through injury can get permission to play in practice matches with the Casey Scorpions including on the following week when no AFL practice games can be scheduled.

Casey Fields is situated at 160 Berwick - Cranbourne Road, Cranbourne East - Melway 134 E7

Casey Fields is a 76 hectare site in Cranbourne East developed by the City of Casey as the premier outdoor sports facility in Melbourne's south east and features a broad range of active and passive recreation opportunities for the entire region. ~ City of Casey Website

Saturday's practice match against Hawthorn will be followed at 4.00 pm by a match between Casey Scorpions and Box Hill Hawks which are the affiliates of the AFL clubs. The game will be over six quarters to enable as many players as possible from the various club lists to gain some match practice.

If you're coming from Melton, it's a bloody long drive. For a practice match anyways.

Well I've moved down from qld so I will travel any distance in Vic to see the Demons play. I think it will be about a 2hr drive which is not a bad drive.

I'm taking the grandson and I'm hoping there will be a few players that he can get to sign his new jumper, I haven't got it for him yet but I assume they will be on sale there.

Anyone have any idea if they will have other entertainment for the kids?

Expect the car parking situation to be diabolical so get there early.

Shouldnt be as bad there's been a whole estate built next door so for the smart ones instead of trying for the carpark park in the new streets in the estate .

Found it to be no issue last year

Like I said mate as you drive in to Casey Fields look to the right and there's streets everywhere to park and its virtually no further a walk than parking at the track and field carpark.

How can a game be over six quarters? Why not four thirds or five halves?

Should be less than that 'cos it's freeways almost all the way. The hardest part could well be finding parking.

There's plenty of parking in and around the ground. This issue has always been everyone leaving at the same time at the end.

You're kidding right. It took me 20 minutes to get from the front gate till I found a park and got to the ground.

I haven't been up that way for years, I would like to go but it is a long way to drive from Fitzroy and my driving skills are a bit dodgy these days. But can I still land my Cessna at Casey Airfield? Anyone know? If I can that would be great, I could do a circuit of the ground before play if you like. Happy to hang a few Demon flags out off the wings. Over and out.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
