So we now have picks 9 (still gets us a classy mid), 21 (compo... hopefully) and 53 (which essentially means we got Viv Michie (sp?) for free). Nice one MFC!

We just confirmed this is the whole deal:

Dom Tyson, pick 9 and pick 53 to us.

Picks 2, 20 and 74 to the Giants.

Still a great deal. We will still probably trade our Sylvia compo pick for Vince and then use Picks 9, 36 and 53 on players/upgrades.

Pick 2 & 20!? really? I wouldve thought just 2 would be adequate..

What is Mahoney on about?

Manager of Football Operations Josh Mahoney said: “We’ve been able to bring in a class midfielder in Tyson, and improve our second draft selection from pick 20 to pick 9 in what we see as a fairly even draft.

We have also been able to improve our pick 72 to pick 53, so the net effect of the deal is very positive for the Melbourne Football Club.”

We lost pick 2, so 9 is our first selection...or does Mahoney know something about potential Sylvia compensation (unlikely, I'd say this is just a mistake)

Here is what Knightmare had to say in his Phantom Draft from 2011:

#3 GWS - Dom Tyson (VIC - Mid)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 08/06/1993
Recruited from: Oakleigh Chargers
Style: Simon Black
Player comparison:
Range: 3-5
Profile: Real standout throughout the champs and has really risen up the rankings in a hurry. Really good genuine footballer who doesn’t stand out athletically, but can do it all. Left footer, but can use his right, and use it well when he needs to. Has a really high work rate and has great endurance. Has great vision. Skill level is exceptional for an inside player and has all the footy smarts and decision making ability you could hope for. Big time ball accumulator who should have a fairly immediate impact at the next level through the midfield.
Why: It is Tyson v Wingard for this selection. I think Wingard is the better talent, but I do think with the way Tyson performed throughout the U18 champs and the way he closed out the season that he might just go that one selection highe

Unless you think about it like this:

Pick 2 for Tyson, who was pick 3 just two years ago and he's had 2 years already in the system.

Pick 9 for Pick 20.

Pick 53 for Pick 74.

I really, really like this deal. He will be a 10 year player for us and is just the sort of midfielder we need. Would much rather him than Kelly, Aish or Billings, players so many have said we don't need due to their build.

I would think he means that we have basically used our 1st pick already (on Tyson) and now our 2nd is 9 instead of 20. Makes sense.

WHy did he only play 3 games this year?

PCL injury that sidelined him for 5 months. No serious injury history apart from that.

Tyson has averaged like 14 disposals. Looks like a bit of a fail for us. Time will tell

He has had an injury interrupted first 2 seasons but will be every bit as good as or better than Aish or Scharbnerg or whoever gets taken at pick 2

Watch his highlights, he moves like Pendlebury and has insane skills like him too

This is going to make West Coast nervous about downgrading pick 6 to pick 10 considering they want Dom Sheed so badly.

Would be nice if they took the risk and we ended up taking Sheed at 9

I see. Not entirely true, but I like Mahoney's spinning anyway.

Getting Tyson plus another top 10 pick is a great win for this club.

It's a phenomenal get. Tyson is a monumental talent and has been in the system for a while.

I rate him higher than Shiel and we've still got pick 9 for another great mid in the draft (hopefully).

Great result MFC.

He suffered a bad knee injury in 2012 which hampered his ability to play this year, but let me tell you this kid is fantastic. Another Oakleigh Chargers boy, who was in the young development squad when I was there he is an incredible inside player. Brilliant inside hands, and whilst not an enormous body a fantastic core that makes him look like he's always in control. Judd-like in the instance of being not enormously big, but looks completely comfortable on the inside.

He would have played one year with Viv Michie too, which who knows if that had any influence.

I too agree I would've loved to keep pick 21.. But to get upgrade 20 to 9, which should see us net Nathan Freeman *touchwood* this is going brilliantly.

Just to recap this is who is coming to our club..

Jesse Hogan....

A ready to fire Viv Michie

Pick 3 Dom Tyson

The 9th best player in the country this year

With potentially Vince, Cross or someone else to come, this team is turning around. And fast.

Our midfield is certainly taking shape. A young core of Viney, Toumpas, Tyson, Michie and Pick 9 to go with Jones, Trengove, Grimes and possibly Vince means we are looking much, much better already.

That's how I read it.

As far as trade dealings are concerned:

Swap Tyson for pick 2

Swap ND9 for ND20

And the other trade is an extra little sweetener, for a pick GWS would never use anyway but we probably will now.

fair enough, i havent seen too much of him so i was just putting it out there. Hopefully u are right then

I stand to be corrected but Dom went to Trinity Grammar in Kew and the whole family are Demon Supporters.

If so that has to be a real plus+++

I am assuming the MFC put him through fitness testing and did a full background check on his knee , the kid has only player 13 games thanks to injury but is no doubt a monumental talent

And to put an even more positive spin on it, depending on what positions people are recruiting for, pick 9 is actually a bit higher than 9th best... assuming after Boyd they were all mids, then that is 8th best mid at worst; but I'm guessing there are some others in there that aren't mids.

well done, brilliant

Eloquent, wasn't it?

Honestly though, you're essentially criticising the kid based on his first season.

Only 3 games this year due to injury, so he hasn't had a lot of chance to raise those averages.

I think we need to relax and trust Roos on this one until we see evidence otherwise.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
