2013 Player Review - Maia Westrupp

A bit too much of a long shot for me.

Would rather get a tall American basketballer/footballer who already has some muscle and we could develop into a ruckman.

Glad the mfc is thinking out the box though.

who?

I'm a bit the same. Article below says 187cm midfielder, so good size and 2.8sec 20m sprint so quick. Also remember seeing video of Maia playing volleyball and he had a humungous leap on him.

As for actually having any football ability did anyone see him play this year (KC?) or chat to him.

Hopefully he is spending 24 hours a day with a football in his hands as he obviously has raw talent

Tadgh Kennelly?

George Stone credited as being the guy that turned him into a footballer?

I imagine Stone had a lot of influence on Mike Pyke also?

If Westrupp has the desire, I think they'll make a footballer out of him.

Also saw on his Instagram a video of him kicking a ball through from a ridiculous angle, although it was a rugby ball from a place kick.

I am all for this idea, you find the stars in the weirdest places. And you never know unless you give them their chance. Mike Pyke - Canadian international rugby player.

New Zealand may end up being the new Ireland, guess we will have to wait and see.

Watched him play about 5 of the 11 games, improved every time I saw him.

Spoke to him a couple of times as well.

He developed, ie picked up the game, quicker than they thought, that he went from coming over to Melbourne during holidays and spending the rest of the time in AFLNZ league, to coming over permanently and playing in the development league.

Because of rugby background, he can tackle, has prodigious leap on him, his kicking is getting better and better, played most of the games in defence, watched one incident where opposition isolate him one and one, made three repeat efforts and killed the ball

I have him as a real smokey, expect to see him in Casey firsts next year.

As for skinny, asked him, fitness staff said he could play at around 90kg, he is still very young, saw his Dad once, of Maori descent, a seriously built guy.

Must take after his mother!

Anyone know if we are having him back next year? I believe he put his studies aside to spend the year with the Dees to speed up his development. With Roos big on international players I hope Maia is back next year!

Yeah would seem a waste of time to get him over for a few VFL ressie games and then give up on him straight away.

If you do a little research, his Instagram shows him training for something while back home in NZ, and Rodan commenting to "enjoy the break."

You'd think that indicates he's expecting to come back.

I'd be surprised if they only contracted him on for 1 year anyway, since he's clearly a longterm project.

Yes; indeed; and your wish is MFC's command!

Saw Westrupp play quite a few times during the season.Looks a long way off to me!

Not particularly tall, skinny. Looks lost at times (which is fair enough as he is learning the game).Didn't seem to have pace beyong anyone else on the field and not a great motor at present.

He mostly played in defence to learn the game.

The recruiters obviously saw some potential in him and my guess would be running ability, but his choice seems to be a bit of a head scratcher to me.

Wouldn't surprise me if he gets bunted and Roos fills the spot with a tall and strong American athlete or an elite running Irish prospect.

Terrible waste of resources, they should be spending time teaching the seniors how to kick, typical though.

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
