The long-awaited arrival of the club's son of a gun proved worthwhile as Jack showed the toughness, courage and determination that is a hallmark of the family. A toe injury in midseason curtailed him somewhat but he is well on his way to a stellar career. The only Demon nominated for the NAB Rising Star in 2013.

Talk about living up to the hype.

What an absolute gun who would die for the jumper.

And he's still just 19.

Two things that really stood out for me as I wasnt expecting them - his pace and kicking ability.

Both were very good, I think the perception of him was he was an inside mid that could accumulate possession and maybe lacked some speed and explosiveness.

Well he looked bloody fast to me.

True. Even Melbourne could not stuff up developing Jack into a better player.

They don't even have to do anything. Just tell Jack to stay within a couple of metres of Nathan Jones at every training session and let his competitiveness and desire to improve do the rest

Love father and son in the same club.

Can not wait to see him in 2014.

Not much to really say - basically our only genuine midfield prospect going forward.

I would have liked to have seen what he could do with an injury free year.

The club won't be developing Jack, Jack will develop the club!

He ran 51sec for 400m in the APS sports. This isn't mega fast but indicates mid to high 11sec for 100m.

so refreshing to have a kid get some serious runs on the board in his first year

I really, really hope his endeavour is something that winds up setting a standard for the group

G I ran 51.7 when I was 12 so it isn't ultra fast (or maybe I was fast!) but he has a great ticker and will die for the club so we just need more of those!

Impressive. 2 secs outside the world record for a 12 year old. If you had done that time a year earlier you would still hold the gong

Him and Kent need to work on their set shots.

Suspect that he and Kent might have to work on getting their bodies up to AFL standard first, as 19 year olds.

Never been so confident that one of our player will become a star. (never said that about anyone before - except maybe Hogan)

Destined for big things and a steal at pick 26.

Will be one of our main mids in 2014.

Interesting isn't it. I agree with your optimism but what makes you and I so confident? It is that he is physical, passionate, aggressive and confident. His skills may or may not be elite, who knows at this stage but we are confident he will make it. These guys find ways to compensate and develop their strengths.

Now there are one or two of these personality types in every draft but not always blessed with sublime skills. I really believe you should zero in on these types when drafting, they won't all work out but if you got 2 or 3 of them right you could be suddenly playing finals footy.

I was never much good at Sport as a kid but Aths was one of my strong suits - let me confirm that a 51sec 400m is rather fast for a kid to be running. Impressive!!

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
