Must have been screwed over by Scott too, I suppose?

Agree.

I think you can question when a player is dumped by one club but I'm figuring that something is going on when you are dumped by your second.

Just another poor selection.

Plain and simple.

Double Agree.

The irony is Gysberts was one of the very few midfielders that Prendergast recruited. And he recruited a dud one. Aargh!

Gysberts for Pederson. Talk about a nil-all draw.

At the time I thought we were getting shafted in a big way so I'll take this as a win!! lol

No it's 0-2 against MFC.

We kicked an own goal when we wasted a first round pick on him.

We kicked another own goal offering Pedersen a 3 year contract.

It's enough to make the Southern Stars blush!!!

You can't polish a tu rd, but you can roll it in glitter.

You are obviously not a fan of Mythbusters. They had a show where the challenge was to polish a turd, and they were successfull!

Guilty of the above, although I said Cale will be our Goddard.

It was hard not to get sucked in, got some big possession games early between some ordinary games. At that time, being the eternal optimists we were it was hard not getting excited blaming the poor games on lack of experience.

For those who are interested, he was pretty consistent getting the pill this year with most games getting 20-25 touches for Werribee. Was only in the best 3 times however which is very disappointing for someone who I thought would have been one of the most desperate to prove people wrong.

If anyones interested:

I heard that the Gys did have attitude problems at Melbourne but?

Makes you wonder what the hell Neeld was thinking getting Pedersen on board!? We already had Sellar, Fitzy, Clark, Dawes, Gawn, Spencer, Jamar, Mcdonald, Frawley, Davis as our talls yet he decides to add Pedersen when clearly we were crying out for midfielders!

As an AFL listed player whose supposedly a ball magnet, that's pretty ordinary. He needed to be among the best most weeks. Had everything to prove this year and failed to do so.

He's basically just not as good as what he was touted as by the Melbourne PR machine.

Are there any talls you haven't mentioned in that list that Neeld might have been trying to squeeze out??

I actually think Prendo was OK at choosing big guys - eg: Howe and McDonald came in same draft as his Cook shocker.

But quite obviously he had no idea when it came to assessing midfield potential and I'm not talking Scully and Trengove because they were the standout juniors that year and everybody would have taken them 1 and 2.

But Gysberts was never a good kick and that stood out as a junior and he was tall and lightish through the core, which went against the trend towards strong-bodied smaller tackling types. The quality he overlooked that year was astounding. Tapscott at 18 was another of his gems.

He did the same with Morton (4) - another tall, no core strength midfielder who was sliding down the order having been originally touted as pick 2 with Cotchin that year.

When you look at what was around there were so many other better options.

I actually think alot of prendo's decisions were based on keeping the big names happy, Blease is Scullys best mate, Tappy is Trenners i always wonder if they were selected perhaps early because of that alone.

True that, but I thought we were offloading a young-gun for some mediocre at best VFL journeyman. As it turns out I was only half right.

Thought he had promise. Was sad to lose him. But now that he had a season at North and didnt crack it for a game, its hard to see why we would bring him back. Unless the rumours were true and the Swans were into him big time (which apparently is why we had to spend an early pick for him). Maybe Rooooosy has a feelin'.

Re the Scott Pendlbury comparisons early on - I could see a physical similarity when comparing their height and their build when they got drafted. The problem is, Pendlebury is now 191cms and 91kgs where Jordan is 190cms and 84kgs. No ability to put on bulk??

Believe it or not, but given our shallow midfield I wouldn't completely be against signing him on a 1 year deal as a delisted free agent to see what Roos can do with him.

For me it would be weighing up whether to do that, use pick 80 odd in the draft or use a pick in the PSD where there may not really be anyone available anyway. But I'll back Roos in on this one.

Just another poor selection.

Plain and simple.

Maybe or maybe a mixture of poor development and poor culture. Who knows what he would have been like if he got picked up by Geelong.

Posted

Of course its our fault he wasn't developed. Not North's or Jordan's. Its us - the perennial basket case.

Jordan by all reports didn't want to do the work. Not unusual in talented juniors. Most of them have never had to work hard in their lives with regard to footy. They stand out at every grade. Its why the first thing they need to be taught is defence - they have never done it before.

Seriously when are our players going to take responsibility for their own performance? It beggars belief they can sit their collect their paycheck and swan around like they couldn't care less.

I still like the Sheedy idea(at least I think it was Sheedy) - look at the losses and see who are the non-performing players . Then get rid of them.

Remember talking to the Yarra Valley football coach and he told me that Gysberts was a cut above Blease.

I believe it alright.

You have a football version of Stockholm syndrome.

I was at the "G" that night when cuddles gave us the heads up about GYS going to be selected at #11.

Saying he will end up being better than the other 2. The looks of WTF on every member. "Priceless"

I recall in a player interview that they mentioned Gysberts bragging about his two Rising Star nominees (maybe it was Tom McDonald - in a joking manner), I wonder if it went to his head. Either way getting moved on from his second club should certainly give him a reality check. Its a shame really, he showed so many positive attributes but lacked the work ethic and want to succeed.

If not what you've mentioned above, then surely he should get a big head in the knowledge that Melbourne supporters are still bothering to talk about him 12 months after leaving.

It might just be the player I heard it from, but apparently the playing group found Gysberts quite the arrogant fella.

If he was good with talls why did he pick Cook with a 1st round pick?

Prendergast just did not choose enough midfield talent ....period.

And for the record Craig Cameron was the recruiting head that recruited Morton.

And also FTR, while Morton highly regarded he was never seriously touted as pick 2. If anything the accolades were that Cotchin was better than Kruezer and they were right.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
