I heard that and wasn't too surprised.

I wouldn't take it as too much of a backhander.

They had faith in his ability to contribute when we didn't, and he has only just finished his first year as an assistant at GWS.

You wouldn't want to leave after only 1 year.

Maybe next year or the year after he'll be ready for us to ask again.

Those who have been involved with GWS in its infancy seem to be enjoying their time there and want to be part of the club's successes.

IIRC, Chad Cornes and Dean Brogan are sticking around after their retirements to help out, too.

It's a shame because it would've rounded off a bad saga for us and he would've been qualified, but the way I see it won't the senior assistant be midfield coach anyway?

I reckon Junior was treated horribly. However I think we tend to misunderstand what appropriate treatment of past greats entails at the MFC. Not giving past greats jobs at the club doesn't qualify as mistreatment. It's not an either/or thing. If coaching appointees are genuinely qualified, are a past player/administrator , love the club and will act in the club's best interest (not their mates, Garry 'cough' Lyon) then great. However, if their qualification is that they were a past player exclusively, then no. I don't know how good a coach Junior is. But some on here are throwing his name out there just because he is a past great.

What happened to him in 2010 was a travesty. Not offering him a job for the sake of it is not.

Ox was dirty at the club when he was asked to quit as were Ooze and Robbo and White but they were not given a look in by any other club and if not for the fact that GWS stuffed up and had no senior players on their list neither would Junior.

The handling of the matter was poor but if Junior wants to do a Bartlett then I for one wouldn't want him back. I just hope he remembers who gave him the opportunity in the first place and where his roots are and it's certainly not in some god forsaken backwater like Western Sydney. Up to you Junior.

I don't believe that anyone is doing Junior or the club any favours by dredging out this stuff ad infinitum.

Junior was 33 years old, slowing down appreciably and had spent most of the last half of the season recovering from a hamstring injury. It was a fair call on the part of the football department to pull the plug. Unfortunately, the way it was handled by Dean Bailey was poor and this has been acknowledged long ago.

If Junior wants to honour his commitments with GWS then so be it.

There's no need to make political statements about he situation. It's pretty much irrelevant now.

Roos confirmed last night OTC that Ling will not be at Melbourne next year. Wants to spend another year in the media before entering coaching.

Wow i love how people just make up that he doesnt want to come back because he is dirty on the club.. ffs Mcdonald isnt one to hold grudges besides all past board members that booted them out are all gone!

How about people show a bit respect and just applaude the bloke for what he is doing now because its a credit to himself for the hard work and dedication he put in to get to what he is now.

Like i said why would he come back to melbourne when GWS are bound for early success and his family are now settled.

What about Todd Viney as midfield coach? He has certainly imparted something to his son, either directly or indirectly! If Cameron Ling is out of the question, why not inject a former Melbourne Captain with a fearless approach and keep some MFC tradition amongst our largely-imported coaching structure. (p.s. He has also had experience at Hawthorn with Clarkson and Adelaide and knows the players backwards, especially Jake)

I would have liked Junior around the club, not because he was ex player, more so because he is the right sort of character.

He doesn't have an ego problem, he has a great work ethic. That is the type of person that would change the culture.

Junior was a very good captain, a great team man, and a quality leader. But let's not tangle those qualities up with "deservings". The jobs-for-the-boys mentality stuffed up what could have been a great era under the leadership of Jim Stynes.

No-one, not Ox, Lyon, Junior, Ooze "deserve" any position or role in our club or any other because of their football record. They "deserve" to be honoured at our club functions, to be recorded as guns in our history, to represent us in the media etc...

I would love to see Junior back at MFC, but only if he is right person for the right role, well detached from his achievements for the club.
