I am hoping that we'll be told soon that he's been hired. If I were to make a checklist of everything we need in a coach he'd tick every box. I am absolutely amazed that the club hasn't been chasing him, if not for the senior assistant role then for one of the line coaching spots. To me it just says that despite all the talk we are still not being run properly at the top level. A coach of his abilities should have been right in them mix from the word go.

Agree RM. Apparently keen to get into the AFL as well which he wasn't previously. I fear the problem is there's no Sydney connection. For mine he's a much better prospect than Dew & Kirk so have no idea why we're not into him big time.

I think you'll find the article of the MFC website explains why. They are looking for a coach that has good synergy with Roos, and that would narrow the field considerably. Essentially, their criteria is more than just good head coach material.

I'm absolutely mystified as to how either of you can presume to know from the outside.

I get it, you rate Bassett. I also hear he comes highly recommended.

But there's no way you can say he "ticks every box" or that he's a "better prospect" than either Dew or Kirk.

My only concern arising out of this comes down to the club's judgement.

I would hate to think the MFC effectively shut down Simpson and Burns prematurely because we thought we had Dew, only to find that we didn't actually have Dew.

This is merely speculation. I expect, for instance, Simpson would've taken a senior gig (ie, WCE) over another assistant coaching role (ie, MFC) every day of the week.

I pushed for Adrian Fletcher as a possible assistant a couple of times without much response in the past. I wouldn't look at him as a likely successor but he knows how to get a midfield up and running. I heard him speak at a coaches conference and he was the pick of the six or seven assistants who addressed us. I'd love to see him take control of our young midfield.

The Fletch! Very underrated. Would be a great get as midfield coach and I believe he gets on pretty well with Redden and Rockliff... But that's for another thread.

LOL - unless you played under Nathan Bassett, coached alongside him or been heavily involved with him in some football sense, how could you possibly know he "ticks every box"? EVEN THEN how do you know his skills would translate to successful AFL head-coach?

I'll back Paul Roos' and Peter Jackson's judgements over yours.

Strangely I would have thought exactly the opposite it all but cements it. If he anoints a successor in 12 months it WILL take longer than a year to bring them on. Roos isnt going to want to undercook anyone or his legacy will be in jeopardy possibly. All that for nought !! cant see that being the case.

Im actually glad we havent rushed into this. Im glad that we will have at least one year where the focus of the senior coach is to do just that and only that. Both eyes on the game and not one mentoring his new charge.

There is no doubt we smell more Eau de Toilet than Toilette at present !! And thats fine. Once this train kicks off and starts gathering speed we will have enquiries made of us not the other way around. People will want to join our bandwagon.

That's true, but Roos doesn't strike me as the sort of guy to say "too bad we couldn't get a successor, I'm out".

He would want to find the right person and give them time to learn and develop and be ready for the job. He has set up two incredibly successful coaches, and I'm sure he would do the same at Melbourne.

In fact, if he was so keen to move out of the coaching box, he would have insisted we hired somebody this year, regardless if they were right for the job or not. The fact that he's willing to wait for the right person tells me that he'll stick around for as long as we need him to.

I'd be a big fan of getting Watters in as an assistant.

Not the successor though. But his analytical skills in the box are very highly rated.

I think he's another of Malthouse's raw protégés who should've stayed an assistant, at least for a while longer.

He also suffers from St Kilda being similar to MFC in 2007.

i.e. lots of rapidly ageing "stars" who are no longer good enough to keep the team out of the bottom 4.

There's a balancing act they need to do between showing them due respect and rebuilding the list.

Simultaneously the players want to maintain their paycheques, be a one-club "legend", but also not have to be part of such a pitiful side.

Essentially they need to manage a lot of conflicting desires.

I hope it's the only time but it's quite clear that the reason why the coach search is taking time isn't because of due diligence exclusively. The fact is, while assistants will get on board, the senior assistant will be harder to land because whoever gets the jobs might feel he is playing Russian Roulette. And all the chambers of the gun are loaded. Let's be honest, we have had a s***load of turnover with coaches during the last 6 years. Whilst some of those coaches were caretakers, we have had a total of 7 head coaches in the last 7 years. It seems like a poisoned chalice.

Roosy will need this year to start proving that the club is legit this time around. We then might get to see some quality applicants at the end of 2015. This may have been the reason why Roosy signed for 2 with an option of a third. The club knew that others may not want a bar of becoming a senior Melbourne head coach and the club needed to demonstrate in 2014 that we are an attractive destination to go to.

Not all doom & gloom though, cos I reckon Roosy is being ultra selective and that reduces the field.

i tend to agree with your thinking about this. The more you look at it the more it would strike a reasoned thinker that there can be NO jumping at the first live candidate simply if they are a potential fit. It must be the 'right ' fit. Roos seems to have a clear idea ( whether its right or wrong atm is immaterial as we have no influence) as to who ( as an ilk ) he sees as the natural successor. if you dont find a suitable one in the first instance you have to wait otherwise everything is compromised, defeating all purposes.

For mine I dont really care if he ( successor ) doesnt show/become -avail for even 2 years. id rather get the right person and find ways to accommodate that when it happens. maybe Roos stays on even longer...who knows etc. I dont think anything despite the accepted contracts re Roos/MFC is really set in concrete.

Melbourne needs to prove itself. This wont happen overnight.
