Give him an assistants roles for sure. Just not as Roos successor.

Let's remember he's only coached SANFL footy and then we expect him to do possibly only two years under Roos and become the senior coach?

On average, AFL level assistants do considerably more time before taking the leap.

Showing that he can handle being in the hot seat, albeit at a lower level, may in fact be an advantage to him, over blokes that have spent 5 or 6 seasons as an assistant with, as Malthouse put it to Neeld, "100% care and 0% responsibility."

I'm beginning to really like the idea of Bassett.

Bassett has had considerably more coaching experience than Cameron Ling.

I wouldn't be against it.

My wish was for Ling to only be a midfield coach to begin with. I don't believe the club would've offered the SA role to him first up. That would've been an insult to most other assistant coaches.

From the MFC:

Meanwhile, Mahoney said the club was “getting closer” to making an announcement about its senior assistant coach, who will be the successor to Paul Roos.

“It’s getting closer. This will be a senior coach appointment in succession to Paul Roos in two to three years time,” he said.

“It has to go through a process and ratified by the board, but we’re getting closer with that appointment.”

Looking like it wont be Dew - sounds like its all lined up.

He was interviwed last weekend and the interviewer pressed him but he gave nothing. Interviwer had strong info he was going to Norf but I have heard essendon too

When the senior assistant succession plan was first announced I threw the name of Bassett into the mix. His work at Norwood has been a very in kind to Roos at Sydney. Bassett not only brought a tough and successful game plan that led to a premiership (and now two), he had a huge influence on the culture of the entire club. I am not yet believing he will be part of the Roos succession plan but I would be very pleased if he was.

I listened to Josh Mahoney on SEN this morning, and his tone suggests that MFC already know which player(s) they have in their sights for pick 2 and they are waiting for the other club to put forward their full offer.

I get the same sense from Mahoney with this senior assistant coach role. It sounds very much like they already have their man - they are just waiting for all contract accountabilities to be tied up and then the person will be announced. Sounds very much like Dew to me. I heard Dew interviewed in 2009. I always thought he was a bit of a dumbo but during that radio interview he was thought provoking and articulate about the 2008 Hawks flag. Very impressive.

Just a thought, but is there a possibility that as part of a "deal" (obviously it can't be part of a trade) to get pick 2 to Sydney, as well as giving us a player, they relent and release Dew to come to the MFC?

Probably way against AFL rules but Sydney would do it if it was in their best interest.

Trading for coaches in an accepted practice in the NFL. The Jon Gruden trade being the biggest one, look it up on wikipedia.

Like the Doc Rivers deal, as suggested by rpfc recently.

It could do.

Obviously that would be an unofficial term of the trade.

But I'm not sure we'd need to conduct a trade with the swans to secure Dew.

In fact, despite their stance, I think it's completely unnecessary.

Maybe they had an inkling we'd be dealing with them and wanted to manufacture some upper hand..?

I did joke elsewhere Hannebery and Dew for #2 :)

Nothing like a bit of friendly jocularity! I believe the sen. ass. coach has been decided on. Before that last I heard A Richardson was still in the mix

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
