Chapman would offer us nothing at the stage we are in (below rock bottom) - he would add something to a side in the 6-12 position looking to make the jump to top 4 (Carlton, Essendon, Richmond, North even Port).

Murphy, Gibbs, Kruezer, Judd, Williams all on big money while others would also be on reasonable coin, surely must be pushing the envelope regarding salary cap.

Can't possibly be offering much in dollar terms.

While other clubs can offer him more probable success than us would love to see him at MFC.

Carlton screamed when Sydney got Franklin, yet have benefited from Richard Pratt paying out money to Shylock Judd over the past years. Hypocrisy!

How they can be currently linked to so many players from other clubs is beyond belief. Perhaps the benevolence of Pratt has spread much wider than the AFL claims. It wouldn't surprise.

Nowadays links with clubs likely to play in the finals is still a drawcard, but is marginalised by the mega dollars handed out. Even Carlton would have a limit.

I disagree Gonz, I think Chappy would certainly add a lot of bite in the forward line with all our talls, that may make the difference between winning 4-6 games and winning 8 or more. winning games next year will make us a more attractive destination for other players in next years free agency and draft, it also means when chappy goes we free up some $$. We already have trouble spending our cap money now, I would rather see it go to a one or two year player like chappy than front loading players salaries. No player is going to want to go backwards in salary once our cap starts to tighten, I wonder if we have front loaded any of those players who we let go, i.e. morton and co.

This is the thing. He must be pretty [censored] with the Cats right about now because he, and others on the Cats list, have accepted lower than market rates for their ability, experience and achievements - all in the name of keeping the band together for as long as possible. Now they don't want him, and he wants to ensure spread out future earnings to try and make up for lost earning opportunity. In a bit of a bad spot in my opinion. May just have to retire.

That's true and when I say he wouldn't offer us anything it's more in the "he's a wrong fit for where we are now" thing rather than a "he wouldn't improve the side" thing. Try and sound him out but I doubt he'd give us much if a second glance, he'd want to finish his career playing in big games and September not trying to lift a cellar dweller to mid-table.

Maybe not, we might be a viable option on, say $250 - $300k per year with or without incentives.

He would have a lot to offer and doesn't really fit in with any of the contenders; if he did he'd still be with the Cats.

We just wasted a complete drafting, on Pedersen, Dawes, Byrnes, Rodan and Gillies, set the club back another two years, if that is possible, wouldn't surprise me if they go for Chappy, Dids, Hunt, Jolly and Cross, anything is possible at the MFC.

They could draft Duigan & Laidler from Carlton, then Nahas from the tigers and any number of NQR's.

Byrnes has been a complete failure. On the pitch he offers nothing doesn't get involved. Roden was better but at end of his career. We are starting to sound like a retirement destination for players that aren't worthy of staying on at their club but hey they are good enough for us. I don't buy it.

Doubt we'd have ever really pushed that hard to be in the race anyway. He's one of my favourite non-MFC players, but given the irons we have in the fire in regards to midfielders and how urgent a need that is, a flanker would be well down the priority list I'd have thought.
