True, but at the time of drafting, Dangerfield hadn't quite learned to use his body in that way. It's more this part where the feeling is that they are very similar (without being carbon copies):

"He has excellent speed, is quite courageous and more of an inside player than an outside player at this stage despite his pace. He is a strong-willed young man who has clear ideas and has good balance in his life."

Roo (at 183cms) is actually closer in body type to Freeman (181-182 depending on whose measurement you read).

It is looking like the Pies who will determine his fate. Heavily predicted to be there at 6. If Pies pass on him, it could be our choice if Lions take McCarthy as suggested, or possibly Aish if he slips.

Getting Scharenberg at 9 would make the Tyson deal a blinder for us. Wonder how Barrett would see it?

I wonder if we would have wasted the time and money on this exercise, unless we were fairly certain he would be there at 9. It seems like we have been assured he will be there at our pick. There would be no need to bring him here if we knew he wouldn't get to 9. Don't think they have brought any other interstaters over. Interesting.

Why didn't the club complete a thorough interview with Scharenberg previously? I would have thought they would have interviewed him at the Draft Combine. Maybe there is more to this story as Demon Disciple suggests. Not much info comes out of the club these days unless the club puts it out there

I like the sound of Freeman more to be honest, a pure midfielder. Utilities worry me as they could struggle to find a set position but it looks as though Scharenberg is a good player.

I don't intend this as an attack on you, Django, but I think a lot of Melbourne people have been burned by Morton pick at 4. Not all utilities are rubbish (CF the BJG praise in this thread).

I honestly think the Pick 2 into Tyson and pick 9 is genius by our recruiting team, as we won't be placing QUITE as much expectation on an untried kid as we have in the past.

Who would you pick out of those two?!

Quite simply, he's not a Victorian. For whatever reason, GWS seems to be hell bent on bringing in as much Victorian talent as possible.

My exact thoughts as soon as I heard this. It may well be cat and mouse with Collingwood, trying to force them into a move.

Think back to Hawks /Toigs. Hawks had 2 and 4 and Tiges 3. Hawks wanted both Buddy and Roughy. Rated Buddy higher but wanted Roughy too. Knew Tiges would take Roughy if available but if he was gone they'd go Tambling over Buddy. So they forced the Tigers hand by taking Roughy and as planned got Buddy after that.

I reckon the Pies might think we are their Richmond and wont take Scharenberg at 9 thus they can pick a midfielder at 6 that we may have been targetting and then Scharenberg at 10. We are calling their bluff and positioning as if we will take Scharenberg if available.

Collingwood cannot then take the gamble and the midfielder we wanted and identified at 9 will still be available...

I don't know why so many attack Dunn. He has played in 3 out of every 4 games since we got him. He is in our best 22 ATM. He can play forward, back or in the middle as a tagger. He has a booming kick and can kick goals. Yes he isn't a star, but he is a very serviceable player and better than so many others we have drafted. How many stars have we drafted lately?

Fortunately for us there will be a very good player at pick 9 and if it's Scharenberg, that would be good, if not we will still have a chance to pick up a talented player; as long as we don't stuff it up.

The pressure is off us and firmly on the clubs below; we can still come out the winner. I'm glad we don't have to make the decision on Kelly because he reminds me of some of the earlier picks we've had that everyone said would turn out to be a Generational Player and Brownlow medallist.
