I am actually a bit disappointed we have signed Cross, he wasn't getting a game at the Dogs last season, so there must be a reason.

Yes we needed a bit more in the midfield, but a guy on the wrong side of 30, doesn't kick goals and is slowish, yes courageous, but has the game passed him by?

We tried this last year with pretty mixed results. You get experience as a young guy by playing games, I hope he doesn't hold one of the young ones back by playing

The other 3 signings, yes all for them, Vince is a proven goalkicker as well as a midfielder and the other two could be anything

Was in their best 22 the last 5 rounds of the year.

In his last game he had 27 disposals, 8 marks, 7 tackles and kicked a goal.

If there's anything this squad needs right now, it's a workhorse midfielder like Cross.

TLDR

As much as I enjoy self flagellation it's a bit long for me.

From glancing the top of the post though it appears there are 3 main areas of conjecture, namely Dawes, Pedersen and Neeld.

I'm solid on Dawes. Others can please themselves.

Don't know about the specific results of the medical, but I do know he considered himself to be 100% fit, with not even slight lingering issues.

I get what you're saying but the reality of their situation goes beyond sentimentality. You could argue it would be equally sad for Cross to spend his remaining season at the Bulldogs playing just a couple of senior games. The Dogs fans will always hold him in high esteem, and this move doesn't alter that. Same for Chapman. Why give the game away when you still have something to offer?

Dal Santo is a bit different but he has given such great service to that club, I'd be surprised if many of them begrudged him the opportunity for ultimate success before he bows out.

In all honesty, free agency thus far hasn't exactly been the evil to end all evils. The Hawks may have a gripe about it, but maybe they can focus on that after they stop celebrating the premiership.

Always thought that Cross's great attribute as a mid was in getting first hands on the ball and getting it out to one of the Dogs' runners (Cooney, Griffen, Aker, Gilbee & so forth). Lots of contested possies, lots of handballs in heavy traffic, lots of tackles. All of which our midfield has conspicuously lacked so far.

If he does that for us for the next year or two, then develops Viney and perhaps even McKenzie to take over, he'll be well worth it.

I spent a fair bit of time in temples in India (in the 70's). If he treated his body like some of them, it'd be full of hash and other assorted items.

Having said that, I think Cross will be very beneficial to the team.

I have no problems with Cross paying on elsewhere. He moved to another club because he was delisted as opportunities were limited. His club had other played on the list that had either gone past him or were about to. He has moved to s club where he can help mentor the next generation.

Sylvia left for opportunity. To this year's runners up. How many finals had he played in at the MFC? He gets his first chance at real success.

Dal Santo left to chase money. He played in grand finals at the saints. He is moving to North, a club who might make finals but aren't real challengers, instead of trying to stay and mentor and develop his clubs next generation.

Load of crap on NDS. He would've got the same money next year if not more at the saints than North. Then would've been all but guaranteed another year after than as Hayes retires. Every chance to get the third as well that North offered.

But there is no way he left for money. He left for opportunity and the saints played the reluctant game but were happy to let him go when they worked out it would be Dal Santo out and Longer and Delaney in.

North might not be real flag chances but they are 4 years a head of St Kilda at least.

If the saints wanted to keep Dal Santo they would've and he might have mentored the kids etc. But they traded their first ruck FFS, they signaled their intentions.

NDS left because the saints didn't want him anymore, as they thought he was more value to them now if they "lost" him via FA.

He may have stayed, but he'd likely get paid less on his next contract, maybe a shorter new contract and definitely have less opportunity for success.

In that way you could say he was different to Sylvia... but I actually think that was our end game with Sylvia also, or at least similar.

He wasn't going to be on the big bucks like in the past.

I'm very happy about Cross coming to the club. He is a player who the younger players should emulate on the training and recovery track, and he can still play football at a very good level. I would love Cross to play a mentoring role with Viney, Toumpas, Tyson etc.

This years recruiting (and last years) just gets better and better.

Off the mark Jman but can see why you came to that conclusion.

Read an article with Todd when we initially expressed interest. Mentioned that Cross has no interest in coaching, his passion is sport science and that if he did come to us, he'd work closely with Misson and co to learn as much as possible. We'd also assist with any study he wanted to do.
