i can't see us taking another big foward in this draft since we already have Clark, Dawes and Hogan ready to go next season. We have that part sorted, along with our backline which seems pretty strong. Desperately need mids, strong mids. Dunstan fits that well

People keep saying that Queen's Birthday is our Grand Final (which annoys the crap out of me), but Draft day has become our GF.

We cant even win that..

People need to stop looking at how skinny a kid is and look at how they win the footy. It would also be good if people who comment on threads such as these actually make it clear whether they have actually seen a player play that they comment on or are just an expert based on reading big footy. I could not care how good Boyd looks with Clark, Dawes and Hogan we need nothing more than mids. If people want us to not take the best kids and trade for established players it would be good if they could give examples as to the pick we have who they think may be achievable. Its then easier to rate how good the drugs are they are on.

Big Red, I am one who has joked about skinny kids. However, SA's James Aish looks one hell of a prospect IMO based on reports from the Championships. And I agree, mids must be our target.

Ben cavarra will be the steal of the draft. Great leadership down at eastern an is balanced bettween inside and outside. 35 possessions in first game of championships

Two weeks down the track and there are three new faces in the TAC Cup Future Stars top 10 and Django gets his wish. Luke Dunstan is in it:-

1. GWS TOM BOYD (Eastern Ranges) (1)

2. Melbourne JOSH KELLY (Sandringham Dragons) (2)

3. W Bulldogs MATT SCHARENBERG (South Australia) (5)

4. Brisbane JONATHON MARSH (Western Australia) (7)

5. St. Kilda JAMES AISH (South Australia) (3)

5. St Kilda JONATHON MARSH (Western Australia) (7)

6. North Melbourne LUKE MCDONALD (Oakleigh Chargers F/S) (6)

7. Gold Coast KOBE KOLODJASHNIJ (Tasmania) ( - )

8. West Coast JACK BILLINGS (Oakleigh Chargers) (4)

9. Carlton LUKE DUNSTAN (South Australia) ( - )

10. GWS Giants LEWIS TAYLOR (Geelong Falcons) ( - )

Lewis Taylor the best to have ever progressed through the Falcons according to Mick Turner. Surpassing Ablett, Bartel, Brown, Hodge and Troy Davis as juniors.

The Boyd situation is interesting. He's rated so highly, but the sides likely to have the first two picks have no need of another tall forward. He could very easily slip to three. He won't drop further as both the Saints and Doggies need a forward badly. It's really going to put the "Best Available" line to the test.

If we got a priority pick he would be a pretty handy bargaining chip in a trade to a side like Carlton or freo who are looking for good forwards, and we need a quality experienced mid.

Mick Turner makes these type of comments every year.

We'd have to sit on him for a year then. Could very easily turn into a Melbourne FC-style disaster if he was injured or got wind of the fact that we only drafted him to trade him on. I see far too much potential for disaster in that plan.

Not sure exactly what picks we would get but say we got 2 and 5 or something, we could trade 2 for an experienced mid, assuming Gws feel they don't need him then 5 we could pick up dunstan

Fair enough. Not sre I'd want to give up our pick 2, but you do have a point that his existence will add value to that pick for some sides.

It really comes down to the new coach I suppose, if it were me i'd draft Dunstan and Billings or Aish and look at picking up maybe an Ellis and Cross as free agents

No, it's not going to happen. As GWS found with their mini draft no one wanted to trade quality experience and it would need to be quality to trade out a pick like that.

I'd be happy with any of Aish, Kelly, Dunstan or Sheed.

I still think that there is a very high possibility that we will finish below GWS this season and receive pick #1. As long as we draft the best possible mid with that pick, I won't be too upset.

Tambling or Franklin????

...best available, the lessons of the past need to be learned.

That's a pretty extreme example. We need mids, not forwards. If the top few best players are forwards then we'd be better off trading the pick for an established midfielder.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
