Should the Dees do the dirty on Casey again?

History: For the past four years, Casey has made the finals on the back of some handy Melbourne-listed players, only to find that come the finals, the Dees heirarchy decides that it wants to send most of its eligible VFL players off for a break so that the AFL-listed players can begin pre-season training in early October. The only exceptions to this policy have been players about to be delisted anyway (eg: Bate last year).

Not surprisingly Casey comes up short in September - usually out in straight sets.

This year Casey again looks set to make the finals and its Melbourne-listed contingent (which includes young Jesse Hogan) have been firing.

Given how bad the Dees have been going, players who have been dropped to the VFL get a chance to play in a winning line-up and get some confidence back and play proactive football, rather than the reactive chasing type they get in the AFL.

Casey strength is serving a really good purpose in the current environment and I don't understand why the Dees football administration treats them like s... in September.

My view is that young guys like Hogan, Toumpas, Kent, Gawn, Barry and Blease etc would really benefit from being part of a genuine finals campaign with the added pressure that entails.

If they were to make the VFL Grand Final it would serve as a positive note for the whole club to end its season on - just like it did for Geelong when they won the VFL flag with guys like Ablett, Stevie J and Lonergan one year before they made a quantum leap.

The VFL finals series (and a potential GF at Etihad Stadium) would also give guys like Davis, Spencer, Fitzy, Taggert, Nicho, Tynan, Magner and Couch etc one last chance to show on a biggish stage that they are worthy of being kept on the list.

Whilst I get why Misson and his fitness staff want players to be back early in October, I think the benefits of a successful Casey finals campaign would far outweigh the downside of a later start for the 10-12 guys that would do us proud for Casey.

Am I missing something? I always thought that success was meant to breed success.

I thoroughly agree! Let them play together in a Premiership team!

I think the great case for this is the 2002 VFL premiership in which a core of superstars got there first taste of success.

Ablett

Bartel

Hunt

Johnson

Kelly

Chapman

Look where these guys ended up...

Agree last years VFL premiers Geelong had a number of players who benefited immensely from the finals experience. I think it treats Casey with disrespect to pull all our players out who got the team into the finals.

Barring them being in huge amount of pain (in which case why play them anyway) they should definitely play in Caseys finals. Hogan especially, lets face it he's probably going to have to put up with some bad years with Melbourne, let him enjoy some success with Casey.

Great post . Our consistent refusal to select a competitive side in the VFL finals discourages our attendance and leaves us even further dispirited . When opposition supporters accuse our current hierachy of lacking a football "soul" it's hard to disagree.

No harm in playing finals footy

The harm is delaying post-season surgery, which puts their pre-season training back. I'm not advocating one approach or the other, but let's not pretend that there is no cost involved. It's a decision about what's more important; players playing in finals in a secondary competition, or starting pre-season ASAP?

Sorry Nasher, that theory has really helped us in the past few years. NOT

What about when we were aligned with Sandringham, the played and won several Premierships and didn't affect the seniors, or pre season training

Even if they're off for surgery the amount of time out is still the same. They may start training later but they're also playing full games of footy later, and we need all the actual footy practise we can get, especially seeing we're apparently the best training team going around...

I think most of us want to see our next generation playing finals footy in the VFL

Was there a problem in the past of players not being insured past the end of the home and away games?

And there is the other issue of if Hogan does his knee in the first elimination and then half of us will be questioning why the club didn't put him in cotton wool. After all we knew he could play already

Part of the issue in the past has also been the injury situation. We have often sent players off to have minor surgery rather than play for Casey so that they will be ready to go for pre-season. I think if we can keep our list healthy this should not be an issue this season and it would be a huge benefit to the young group to play together through the finals. Great way to fast track their teamwork and spirit.

In the Neeld era I think the focus has been on fitness in pre-season training. Remember this FD said we'd need 3 pre sesaons to catch up to other clubs, so if we delay someones preseason start by 4 weeks that's an extra month of fitness they lack.

I can see the reasoning, it doesn't mean I think it's the correct decision, and this year we may see a change in tact given this squad has mostly had a couple of preseasons AND we are now seeing that there could be some serious benefit for a group of them to play together.

Does anyone have a list of matches played at Casey? Who is on track to qualify for finals, who has played to many AFL games? I'm not even sure of the criteria.

So maybe you just don't understand football, so I'll explain it.

Fitness gains in pre-season training are significantly different than what someone would do at training during a finals campaign.

During finals they would likely do lighter sessions so they are fresh for the games, same goes for during regular season. Skill sessions and sufficient running and weights to maintain fitness and strength.

Preseason training is full of high intensity sessions, particularly running and sprinting. These sessions are significant longer and at a much higher intensity than during the season. Both running and weights sessions are more frequent because players don't need to recover for the weekend. These sessions are not replicated during the season. The bulk of our hard-core fitness regime was completed pre Christmas this pre-season past, and after Christmas there was a heavier focus on skills and gamelan. Players who are ready to go at the start of October have three months of this intense training, players who don't start until November have only 2 months of this intense training.

When they talk about young players needing to have a few possessions completed prior to having developed tanks, endurance and strength, this is what they are referring to. During the season players don't normally pick fitness up, unless they are resuming from a lay off, and they are often rested or eased through sessions because off the demand of the games which means that fitness gains are not made.

They can play Xbox every day of the week (and probably do), that has no bearing on their training.

So you think after watching us this year our young players would benefit more from running the tan a few times than playing finals footy?

Daniel Nicholson is generally our best trainer and runner, what do you think of his footy skills and decision making?

Or maybe YOU just don't understand football...

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
