For every club interested there will be one with zero interest due to his behavior at draft time last year.

To me nothing he does on field can be measured without a decent off field evaluation.

I'm pleased that the young guy is getting things together. I hope he doesn't throw it away at the last minute like he did last year

Some experts rated him no 2 on talent last year behind only Troy Menzel.

I thought that was a fair assessment, of the games I seen in the championships last year, Garlett was super impressive.

We were the only club last year who couldn't afford to not take Garlett, it was a no brainer.

Even if the kid had of played up this year - worse case scenario - we would of copped no heat for it, because who could blame us for taking the punt?

Now we are useless, we have been since 2008, yet someone thinks we are in a position to let top 3 talents slide.

Garlett will come out next year, be better than 95% of our list and we will all whinge why we didn't take him.

I watched all Lewis Jetta's WAFL year and I rate Garlett the better talent, one thing they have in common is us overlooking both of them.

If we are in culture rebuild mode, there is no way we could have taken a point. Only a strong cultured club whip believe they could turn him around bother.

With two going captains and a young leadership group and the club moving on other players who don't meet our cultural requirements, why bring in another challenge?

An under resourced WAFL club has had no problems making significant improvements in the kid this year.

The well cultured clubs of the AFL didn't take the risk because they didn't need to, the Essendons, Geelongs, WC and Freo's don't need to take that risk.

MFC on the other hand, needed to take the risk, Garlett would be in our top 5 players.

Anyway, I won't be commenting anymore on Garlett, i'll revist this thread when he is tearing it up next year.

Now I was last year in the "please don't go near" camp, but after this year... well not sure we could do much worse.

Has been playing some great footy in the WAFL which I believe is pretty close with VFL standards.

Could we do any worse?

A 17 year old changing a newly acquired habit is a bit different.

Maybe he has been "tarred with the same brush" as some other unreliable first Australians from the AFL.

Talent and a more mature attitude means he will star.

It's a valid point but you need to think about the difference drafting makes. It is not swan districts that have turned him around he has turned himself around.

Right now Garlett has to work to support himself. Swan district isn't his employer so if he wants to go fir a few beers no one cares. He isn't under any media scrutiny watching his every move. He is a nobody, a failure, so is very motivated to make something of himself.

At an AFL club he would be mixing with people with money,with celebrity lifestyle. He would be getting paid good money to play football. Not working for a living. He would have validated by being drafted - it doesn't matter how I behave, I got drafted u deserve to be here.

If we had have drafted him he probably would have continued on the path he was headed. No one drafted him, he realised he needed to pull his head in and has done so.

Swans are not that under resourced, they have a big indigenous programme, which is backed by BHP Billiton, there is no argument re Garlett not being drafted last year trust me I know a fair bit that went on with him off the field, even the Bombers gave him a training lifeline but didn't select him, they would have seen his talent first hand but they would have also witnessed his lack of endeavour and work rate.

As Deanox said the rejection has made Dayle realise it doesn't just happen because you have talent. The indigenous programme at Swans will be helping him but there is only so much they can do, on yesterdays performance right now Dayle seems to want to succeed and prove everyone wrong and is applying himself to the task of playing well with a goal of being drafted.

Will it continue, for the sake of his talent I hope so, I will provide further updates when I see him

Don't perpetuate the us overlooking Jetta crap. He was playing local footy when Nev's mum told us he was the most talented in the family. Find me someone decent drafted out of local footy lately? Leigh Williams didn't work out. I'm sure our recruiters put the word out that Lewis had to go play WAFL and he did and the rest is history. I'm not sure where we were meant to hide him to keep him all to us.

Essendon all set to recruit Garlett in the PSD, he goes back to Perth for the weekend and goes out on a massive bender. How much more do you need to know to say no club in the land would touch him. When he stuffed up at Melbourne he would've been lumped in with Jurrah and Wona and we would've gone down that indigenous problem club road again. Which wouldn't be fair to anyone involved.

I say stuff it, recruiting him can't sink us deeper than we already are. I'd prefer an attitude about winning for now, in the present time and forget about 'planning for the long term future' mentality that we've followed for the last 6 years. The future never comes guys.

Depends how badly other clubs want him, Freo for mine will be top 4, so wont have early picks, I said yesterday I don't think he is worth a first round pick but will go 2nd round at least. Freo do not need any more small forwards

You miss the point. It isn't about good bloke v poor bloke. I am not advocating only recruiting choir boys.

What you don't recruit is poor culture - poor work ethic, personality types who will drag others into party mode, etc.

We are trying to create a hardworking performance culture. A few weeks ago people were complaining about the boys laughing in the spas - Garlett wouldn't have made it to the spa's because based on last year he would've been out on the turps. He wouldn't work hard to get the best of himself.

Ben Cousins and Dane Swan are examples of what could be dealt with - very hard workers, good work ethic, although they are not choir boy characters. They aren't going to necessarily drag others with them, or be dragged by others.

There is a lot to be said for that position. I am sure at the moment we have a lovely bunch of boys at the club.

We have Flash, who is married,a father and a leader of our indigenous boys and who I am sure could be a good mentor for a boy like Garlett.

I recall the problems being espoused with Darling. Do I need say any more.

Personally as I said in another post, if this boy is that talented, we should approach the AFL now, to take him now as a concession for a non competitive side. I know they would deny us but it is worth asking the question. You could couple it with asking for Hogan to be allowed to play the second half of the year. Which club would argue that request.? Remember that every club passed on Dayle, so I don't think there would be an outcry.

We should trust ourself to get our culture right end ensure that we help a boy like Dayle to achieve to his potential both in football and the outside world.

PS. In addition to a truckload of good midfielders the glaring omission in our list is a quality smart, quick forward.

Id rather try a guy with huge talent and fix his attitude than a guy with great attitude and try and turn him into a talent.
