As we all have prob heard by now is that Jack got up and apparently gave a very emotional and motivational speech to the playing group on what it feels like at the moment for a person who has lived and breathed the MFC since he was born. Ive heard rumours that he got very upset when talking about what it felt like for a Fan and what we are feeling at the moment.

While this is awesome and just maybe something that will get the players to realise just what it means to everyone who has ever barracked for the MFC to win a game, it is also scary that a guy who has just played his first game of AFL is the one giving emotional speeches after a big defeat.

What do you all think? positive? negative? or both?

Im kinda blown away that its down to him to not only perform but also motivate the side as an 18 year old. I know of at least one listed player who told a friend he thought jack was full of himself. that player should turn around and have a look at what Jack Viney brings to the table and emulate 30% of it.

Grimes also gave an emotional speech. From what he said after the game other players also got up. Dont for one minute think that the players dont give a rats. I think it is great that JV had the guts to get up and not be stifled by the thought of being a newbie. But this emotional turmoil must be made into a positive. I firmly believe that the team if allowed will play a different brand of football next week. Up to you Neeld and Assistants to let them play without being restricted by zones etc.

My message to the players is - Play man on man even it means you sacrifice your game for the Club. Nate if you are being tagged out of the game tag the tagger or tag another opposition player and tag him out of the game. Do the unexpected. Play with flair, take the game and other opposition players on without fear of retribution from the Coach and his staff. Kick it up the bloody centre for a change. Let loose the old Tappy and let Dunne roost it. Run until you can't run anymore. Protect the player going for the ball. Fear nothing and we will support you.

As was Nathan Buckley, Jonathan Brown and Wayne Carey. We've just mistaken confidence and self belief as a negative because we'd rather be the nice guys than the competitive guys. Screw that attitude. It's part of the problem.

I don't find it surprising at all that two blokes with deep Melbourne connections were the ones who were hurting the most. Jack Grimes grew up supporting the club. I heard Jack Viney supported Hawthorn as a kid but has spent most of his life at the MFC. The rest of the blokes seem like mercenaries and couldn't give a rats about the place.

It's a situation that raises as many worrying issues as it does provide us with hope.

It's great to see JV has the leadership potential, and the balls, to stand up after one game (or, at the least, be good enough to warrant being asked) in front of the whole team. It's also great to see that someone actually cares.

However, it's not really earth-shattering to ask, if a debutant 18-year-old has to do this, what the hell is wrong with the rest of them? It's somewhat laughable that the youngest member of the team is the one leading.

Sat next to him a cafe this morning and, because I've not seen him up close before, I was actually surprised at how slight he is. For someone that young and, really, that small, to be playing like that in a debut match puts most of the rest of the list to shame. In answer to the question, it is a positive that he is having a crack.

Exactly! That is my point. rather than feeding off that confidence they look at it as a threat...

This is more of an indictment on that player than Jack, maybe if we had more blokes who had a bit of self belief and c#*t in them we wouldn't be discussing what a soft bunch of pricks play for our club. These are the type we need desperately.

Spoke to someone last night who is a relative of Malthouse, said that on THursday night and half time Malthouse told them to forget the game plan, take a man, and just friggin play.

We all know what happened next.

Massive negative.

Weren't we told that Rodan and Byrnes were brought in for leadership and experience? If that's the case, where the hell were they yesterday, when that was clearly what was needed?

They'd be the first two I'd drop next week, just quietly, leadership group be damned.

It is an indictment on the club list, but it tells me Jack is a Captain of this club waiting, & the list better get used to it quickly.

Free Agency will be needed for the next 3-5 years...

Watch Todays Game....The Hawks & Cats play for keeps...Real Football.

Jack will play at this level, whether it is with the Demons is up to the club.

Jack Grimes said at the AFL captains pre season launch that the players were better prepared and would not be blown away like they were last year round 1 against brisbane. Good on Viney for speaking up because the rest of them have talked too much with no action.

Talk is cheap around here isn't it....

All we can do is talk. I wish we were talking about actions that have happened to make us win some games but the club don't appear to know what to do.

There's a difference between Jack Viney standing up and giving the playing group a talk on his own and Jack Viney being one of a number of players to do so.

True.

Still is a reflection of where our club's at, though, that he did it at all.

And if he was he first to stand up.

He also turned up an hour early for recovery this morning.

Like I said in another thread, I want to apologize to him because he deserves better. It's not his fault his dad played for us and now he's stuck in this shite too.

What a pathetic state of play.

It will not be long before he can move on Jaded.

The MFC will struggle to stay in existence beyond his current contract length.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
