its no good having an elite forward line if it doesnt get down there..

We matched St Kilda in Inside 50s in our third practice match of 2013, and yet we lost. While that may be because our mids have crappy disposal, the more likely reason was because our forwards didn't position themselves to properly take advantage of the ball coming in.

I really think we messed up not taking all 3 (Wines instead of Hogan - then Toumpas and Viney) -besides the fact were short on mids,

Lovin the 'Hulk', but for me - its mids, mids, mids..

I take your point in terms of current need, but I wouldn't trade Hulk for all the tea in China. We have a potential great on our hands. Clark and Dawes were never going to be enough to compete with the big boys a few years down the track and Hogan was the missing ingredient.

Wines is a hard nosed ball winner who would be invaluable to us right now, but there'll be other mids of his ilk that come through the draft next year. When you have an opportunity to grab a forward like Hogan, you take it.

I'm pretty sure what the OP means is that Todd Viney has fathered both these boys and therefore we actually had the choice and did we pick the right one.

That's what you meant right?

Ridiculous.

Nah - we could've had both. One in the second round and one in the third.

Disagree with this part of the post on a number of fronts. Number one being that Toumpass/Wines wouldn't have last to 13.

Disagree because Hogan looks like a superstar of the competition in the future, something I don't see in Wines.

Lastly, I disagree because I think the Hogan deal was part of what allowed us to get Viney in the second round.

Can see your point, but after viewing the game on replay, i feel a proper midfield is still 1-2 players and 3-4 years away from having any real effect.. and something that we shouldve put more focus on - if it was possible.

I think we couldve got Toumpas at 3, Wines at 4 and Viney at 26? ..apologises if im wrong or have forgotten about something.. (AND still had a real dip at getting Hogan in this years draft)

i agree on Hogan having every chance to be a star - but Wines has been one of the best players in the whole NAB Cup series and been best or in the best every game from memory!

..and you dont see superstar?

I see superstar in Wines, Vlaustin and of course Whitfield from this years draft so far.. (we know Viney has it - but just hasnt been in a position to show it yet)

INHO of course!

EDIT: id guess if there was a shifty deal between us and gws for a 'hogan/barry/pick 3/leave toumpas for us deal' we would have been sprung by now :)

We haven't played a game yet.

For what it's worth I think Viney will be the pick of the bunch, harder at it than Wines, better break away pace and a better kick.

At least im commenting on 3 or 4 games that these kids have played really well in.. Wines BOG against us for eg,

Where as Viney played ok in 1..

BUT youre telling me he will be the pick of the bunch?..

Should i remind you "WE havent played a game yet?" or did i see that somewhere recently..

It was Pick 3/13/Barry for 20, Hogan and "for heaven's sake don't nominate Viney with #1". It wouldn't have been a verbalised or written deal, just the MFC saying "pick 3 might be up for trade", and GWS being smart enough to draw the inference that they couldn't receive it if they forced us to use it on Viney. The obvious wouldn't have needed to be said (although with the tanking deal I guess you couldn't trust the MFC not to say it anyway), so there should be nothing to spring.

I maintain that Toumpas being available wasn't part of the deal, it was just an enormous stroke of luck. You wouldn't be able to make that deal without saying it -- that would be inviting trouble.

Nonetheless, getting all three of Viney, Toumpas and Wines was not possible. Bottom line is that had we not traded pick 3, GWS would have forced us to take Viney with it.

And I can't believe you'd wish Hogan away anyway.

Short term gain Ollie would have been great. At the end of the day we need classy midfielders who can use their skill and smarts to set up play, Toumpas has all the ingredients to be an outstanding player for us.

I am all for us trying to get Wines back to Melbourne in years to come, but it won't happen. If you are over looked for another player why would you want to go to a club that didnt want you? We all saw Ollies face on draft night he was heart broken to be drafted by us. Rory Sloan was told by BP that we would pick him up, we went for Bennell at the 11th hour instead and his old man said he would not touch MFC after that.

This is a stupid thread all three would have been great, let's put some faith in Todd Viney who knew Ollie and still picked Toumpas, their must be something special about the kid!. Give them all a chance to develop, i wish Ollie all the best, seems like an outstanding young bloke.

Ah, see youre making that assumption! When GWS clearly said that they always had the intention of picking the 3 players they did - because they basically grew up/played footy together, while growing up.

I think they shyed away from Toumpas because of the hip problems.. clubs do that to kids with injuries all the time..just look at our own Sam blease

And at NO STAGE did i 'wish Hogan away' - in fact i proposed that we could have a real dip at him in this years draft, just 1 page back in fact..

Howd you miss that?

Can THIS troll be banned from posting in threads? I mean, you show your stupidity in every post.

After your efforts for winning tool of the week in the 'gameday thread' a couple of days ago - you have the nerve to hark up at someone else?

Fool.

BTW - my pick of Wines as the best mid, inside / outside from the draft a few months ago.. wasnt too far off huh? You were in the process of disagreeing when we last spoke..

That was before you began slagging me off in other threads..

FMD What a sook! Show me this quote of me winning tool of the week champ?

Wines hasn't played an AFL game yet, none of the draftees have, so might be a little premature in judging his career at this stage.

PS- Where have I been slagging you off in other threads?

We obviously did a deal to get Viney at 26.

The world knew we were going to take Viney no matter what so the deal had to be done, Hogan was always apart of that deal and we chose Toumpas ahead of Wines, there was no way to get all three.

Agreed!,

The fellow that sits next to me at work is a tigers supporters, we play the "what if we drafted him instead of him" game all the time!. Such a wide range of emotions comes out, but we have learned that Tambling over Franklin wins every time!.

Well 'the whole world' also rated Viney at about pick 6 - 8 and i dont think GWS wouldve taken him before then. We should know Sheedy by now.

So we agree to disagree.. and TSFKA has got it right. We'll never know.

My point is - i, personally, would rather stack the midfield (and the backline) before the forward line.. For me, Viney, Toumpas AND Wines along with Jones, is akin to Brisbanes 'Fab Four' from a decade ago..

Some will agree, some wont.. makes for an interesting discussion tho..

Haha ok champ, well I was involved in that thread and you weren't so that makes it clear who knows what they're talking about it doesn't it.

You're like a grumpy turtle, just poking your head out every now and then trying to tell somebody off without having a clue what's happening outside your little shell.

An honest thread? Maybe you should start from the start. Neither of these players have played a game, but that's not even the main point. The main point is Viney was a father/son selection (and one of the more famous ones recently) and anyone suggesting we should have taken Wines instead has no understanding of the situation and is pretty clearly either trolling or shouldn't be allowed to start such ridiculous threads.

I cant beleive Toumpas is being touted as the next Robbie Flower in this thread.....ffs the kid hasnt even played a game of AFL footy yet. Would be almost as bad as the Morton being the next Goodes comparison we once saw
