"Tanking"

"No-one was as obvious, or as clumsy as our club. "

Really,BH?

I thought the Blues used pretty bloody obvious tactics when they lost the last 11 in a row.

Freo were pretty blatant about playing their virtual reserves against Hawthorn in Tassie in round 22, 2011.

So we were clumsy and they were skilful?

I'm in no way denying we tried to optimise draft picks, but I just think this statement is a bit of unnecessary self-flagellation!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_AFL_season#Round_13 > Danners last game V bombers.

see the next round (14), 'Heritage round', where the Blues did their best to lose to a struggling Dees team. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_AFL_season#Round_13

It was Riley's first game as caretaker. Carlton were sitting on 16 points at that time under Pagan,,, he was gawn in another 2 weeks...

.. &, Riley's last game as caretaker, was against > http://carltonfc.com.au/

He later went onto a cushy job @ you guessed where. >

I'm just telling everyone what herd on the radio mate.

They're Tim Watson's words not mine.

Yes, of course , that was my point

Tim Watson on SEN this morning believes that there will be announcement by the AFL either today or tomorrow. He also believes that the AFL will announce penalties and that the whole matter is going to court.

Just what we need for this to go on another 7 months (at least) and hang over the Club like a stench.

Tim - you are a spud. So without a formal meeting of the Commission, the AFL are going to make an announcement which will directly lead to court action.?

Who gave you that tip Tim? One of the Essendon drug cheats was it ?

Go to the top of the class Scoop Junior.

Indeed, it goes further than that. The AFL is acting as the administrative body dealing with the rights of all constituent clubs. It can't apply its rules in one way with one club and refuse to apply them to others without good reason.

Correct

Jurrah domestic, Franklin contract, Pies chasin', Bombers on the roids... Good time for the AFL to slip out it's "nothing to see here" ruling on the "tanking" affair.... Come on AD

Wishful thinking stuie

But if it gets you through the night mate go for it.

Caro was on 3AW tonight and said she expected the AFL to lay charges within the next week.

Said Bailey, Connolly and the MFC would most likely be charged, and maybe Schwab.

Dwayne Russell pressed her on Jim Stynes, asking / implying that it would tarnish his legacy, but Caro didn't bite, saying she didn't think his name would be dragged through the mud.

When asked what the likely outcome would be regarding penalties, she said the club would come to some sort of negotiated settlement with the AFL, as the Crows did with Tippett.

You can take out of that what you will..

CW update. I never listen to 3AW, well rarely but i was keen to hear what they had to say about the bombers. CW back after her break. Was asked about the outcome of the dees tanking situation.

In a nutshell said something along the lines of:

  • decision will be handed down in next 2-3 weeks, certainly before the season starts
  • the board, bailey, cc and CS would all be charged
  • a negotiated settlement would be worked out in a similar fashion to what went down with the crows

Did she state these as facts of which she had been informed or, as I presume, this is just her speculating on what she thinks is likely to happen? Either that or the AFL's processes are totally corrupt and leak like a sieve. Or she has a crystal ball.

Probably all of the above.

I suspect that whatever happens, it will all be done for show and the end result won't be too embarrassing for either the AFL or the MFC.

With the ramifications of the Essendon situation up in the air, the AFL won't be all that keen on the tanking issue growing legs. It wouldn't take much - a disgruntled ex-player or official from another club and the sport will be immersed in scandal for the whole season and perhaps beyond.

There's a real danger there for the AFL CEO in view of the many pronouncements he made that club's don't tank. I suspect that Caro is ready to strike and use that article she wrote quoting him after the Jordan McMahon game.

under no circumstance did she saw this was fact.

Just they way she thought it would go.

She said: "Dean Bailey WILL be charged. CC WILL be charged, CS will probably be charged, The club WILL be charged..."

Hopefully this is just her arrogant manner, and not a leak from HQ ( absolute disgrace if this is the case)

Well, that's true to form...

I have to say - if ever the AFL wanted to push a troublesome case under the carpet - this is the week to do it.

She only returned home 2 days ago..my guess is she hasn't seen the MFC's response and therefore is basing her statements primarily on her previous knowledge of the situation. Still, she sounded very confident in her contentions...

She did say this was not fact just what she thought would happen.

It is reasonable summary based on the little we all know.

If people and/or the club are charged, then there must be a hearing, if they want to contest the charges. Maybe the AFL wants us to defend ourselves and if we beat the charges, all is sweet. Then there would be no need for Court intervention.

Yes, but they have already given us that chance with the report they give us. We provide answers and she's all sweet.

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int

    POSTGAME: Rd 24 vs Collingwood

The Dees played insipid, error riddled & uninspiring footy all night and in a lightning delayed match they eventually succumbed to Collingwood by 46 points at the MCG in the final game of the year. Thank God this season is finally over. Bring on 2025.
