Has Greater Western Sydney ever really been keen to snare controversial former Crow Kurt Tippett, or was its supposed interest just another attention-seeking ploy from the AFL’s newest club?

Reading between the lines of the latest official statement on the matter, we may never know, as it appears the outcome of the AFL Commission hearing into Tippett’s final Crows contract has made Kevin Sheedy’s club reconsider their potential quarry.

Giants chief executive David Matthews made the following statement in relation to Tippett.

"We note the sanctions handed down by the AFL Commission today and we now have a clear understanding of Kurt Tippett’s availability for the 2013 season," he said.

"We now want to see the financial terms on which he will nominate for next month’s draft so we can assess his affordability.

"We also have to consider whether he is the right fit for the club as we continue to build a strong culture amongst our young playing group.

"These are all factors we will now carefully consider over the coming days before making a decision on whether to draft him with our first selection."

I wonder if we thought of taking him in the PSD and then trading him next year to the highest bidder. His salary would have been the cost of upgrading the PSD pick to a (say) first rounder.

It's obscene that the Premiers can afford him and fit him in their structure and GWS can't.

given he will miss 11 games and GWS wont play finals (sydney will and will then have a cherry ripe tippett to slot into their forward line) in the short term he will be paid far too much for this year by gws but not by sydney.

gws could afford him if they hadnt paid voldemort so much.

I think that the AFL has guaranteed him a clear path to the Swans in return for him not taking any further legal action into this matter.

He could sue both Adelaide and the AFL for loss of wages etc and probably win.

The AFL are scared of going to court on any wages issue because they will lose.

Yes, they get to name their wages. By drafting them, you're automatically agreeing to their terms with regards to payment, there's no further agreement to be had.

Why would you state the second part of the highlighted sentence unless you'd already made a decision that you didn't want him? In my opinion, if GWS were seriously considering Tippett they would have just said, " We also have to consider whether he is the right fit for the club". Adding in that bit about building a strong culture suggests GWS has serious concerns about what Team Tippett (meaning player, father, agent and any other hangers-on) would do for that culture...and for some reason wanted to say so.

They the AFL & GWS either did want him at GWS @ one stage, Or just Sheeds wanted him at some stage, but got the no-no from HQ.

Or they all just wanted to put the wind up tippett for a few weeks to not give him a totally free ride to east Sydney... Also they wouldn't want other players thinking they can just pull the same ruse, to get what they want.

So a bit of scaremongering is surely about all they can do, without testing the whole thing in the courts.

But IMO he's on his way east to the Swans. IMO already sanctioned & done & dusted. but we'll see.
