I like that under Neeld we are focusing on players who have a hunger for the work required to be successful in the AFL, rather than simply rating their natural talents and assuming they'll have the drive to do the work if selected.

interesting reading on dan nicholson

46. COLLINGWOOD - Daniel Nicholson

Height: 183cm

Weight: 76kg

DOB: 02/11/90

Club: University Blues (Vic)

Draft range: 40-70

Nicholson is an out-and-out speedster who's also been strongly linked to the Pies. His unconventional route includes a 2010 season in which he played at half-back in Melbourne's amateur competition and shone in an under-19 representative game for the amateurs against the Victorian country team. Pace and a long left foot are his main attractions.

and others...

53. MELBOURNE - Jeremy Howe

Height: 192cm

Weight: 85kg

DOB: 29/06/90

Club: Hobart (Tas)

Draft range: 50-rookie

A year ago, the high-flying forward was playing country footy with Dodges Ferry, outside Hobart. In 2010 the 20-year-old impressed greatly through his aerial feats with Hobart in Tasmania's state league. If he plays in the AFL in 2011, he'll be one of the stories of this draft.

55. HAWTHORN - Troy Davis

Height: 192cm

Weight: 90kg

DOB: 10/06/92

Club: Geelong Falcons (Vic)

Draft range: 50-70

Tall defender with frightening speed who prides himself on contested marking and spoiling more fancied opponents. His coaches liken him to Brian Lake in his ability to read the flight of the ball in the air.

Not going to include the lucas cook bio!

It is now a pity that we couldn't do better on our trading negotiation, as I and others have written. Better trading would have got us higher picks to use as we now have a few extra picks. In the end we may very well get the blokes we want but on face value we could have improved our position.

What was that line about having your cake and eating it too?

Yeah, I agree. We look like ending up using 73 and 74 on Rookie Elevations which means the Pedersen and Martin deals are measurably worse: Martin for 53 and Gysberts and 63 for Pedersen.

Pace and skills are all we need here, with the mature talls already traded for and Viney/wines (you'd think) at the top, we could definitely use some outside class and maybe some "magic" with LJ no longer at the club.

Would love either of Wilkins or Towers who were both mentioned in two of those drafts. However I don't expect them to last that long.

53.Melbourne

Player:Leigh Osborne

Height: 186cm

Weight:84kg

Club: Frankston Dolphins

Description: Rebounding medium defender who can also play through the midfield. Possesses a very good burst of speed and is an excellent kick on his preferred left foot. Played with the Eastern Ranges at TAC Cup level before a stint with local club East Ringwood. In 2012 he crossed to Frankston in the VFL and has become a shining light in defence averaging 17.4 disposals. Loves to run and carry the ball, can be a dangerous player when delivering inside forward 50. Accumulated a season best 28 disposals against Williamstown in Round 12.

For what it's worth I played with him at East and while he's good, I don't think he'll cut it at AFL level. Hope he gets picked up for his sake though.

One bloke I would love us to have a punt on is Anthony Bonnadio from Northern Knights U18s. He has sort of dropped down the pecking order in recent seasons as he hasn't really shot up in size. He is small (approx. 175cm, 78kg) but is seriously skilled and should be available at these picks or possibly the rookie draft... not due to skill, more due to height.

Has a good engine (good enough to play midfield) and a good burst of speed. I'd see him becoming more like a Steve Milne forward pocket-type because he has really really good goal sense, and great defensive pressure. We could definitely do a lot worse at these picks, and I'd love to have him picking crumbs under the feet of Clark, Dawes, Hogan, Pederson, etc.

2012 Statistics

16 games

22 goals

Ave. 20 possessions

Ave. 5 tackles

[media=]

I must say that Anthony looks good (skillful and fast). Make an excellent rookie as a minimum.

Bonnadio looks good...but that is the point of a "highlight reel".

He is quick, chases and tackles, strong second and third efforts, perfectly weighted 50metre passes

would love to have him, wonder why he would slip so far or is that just an indicator of how strong this pool is?

Also like the sounds of atkins or nelson.

Both sound quick and polished, and the exact types to compliment our strengthening inside game.

New FB dept regime and draft team are taking mainly players that can play now, not skinny kids who could be great in a few years after they have had time to build a body and develop. The highlight reels of a lot of players look good, I would expect that our draft team would have looked at draft camp results, match stats, health, viewed all the video there is to view, seen matches and interviewed their prime candidates. I am extremely pleased with the players we have gotten so far, Neeld and team have done a great job getting the recruits they have while a specter of potentially loosing draft picks from the background tanking investigation was going on in the background. I cannot wait to see who we land, and the Dees begin the 2013 season.

These picks will be our future stars if our drafting history is anything to go by :P

Just so you all know in English it would be pronounced

"Chucky Ar LAW"

Haha.My commment wasn't in reference to that. But thanks for clearing that up.

Anthony and Freo have come to an amicable decision for him to get out of his 3 year contract early, I wonder what Neeld thinks of him?

No chance, he was struggling at WAFL level with Subiaco and is definatley finished as an AFL player

the afl website has us picking up Nick Rippon & Josh Saunders. I like the look of Saunders, nice size.

Rippon looks like a jet imo, only seen the one video but he killed it for the whole 20 minutes of highlights

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
