What are the Demons lacking

We need a consistent backman who can use the ball and make decisions as well as use the body well- Rivers was our only one.

We need to set up a proper midfield who work together and run together. Apart from Jones no midfielder had a good season, I think Viney and Rodan will help with the clearances. An outside midfielder who gets into good positions would help too

A forward line which can stay in position (was a huge problem when Clark got injured).

Welcome.

Have you been in another country for the last three weeks?

We have just acquired a 194cm/105kg FF/CHF in Chris Dawes, a 193cm/100kg FP/Back-up ruck in Cameron Pedersen, and a 194cm/97kg 17 year old FF/CHF in Jesse Hogan to accompany our 200cm/100kg FF/back-up ruck in Mitch Clark.

Grundy wouldn't get a game in our forward line and while he may become an excellent ruckman - Jamar has another three years on his contract, ruckmen take ages to mature, the best ruckmen in the game (Sandilands, Cox, Jolly) came from the rookie list, and we need midfielders.

Pick 4 should be spent on the best midfielder in the draft.

Well said sir.

Rather ironically in view of recently exclusively revealed "Wilsonian facts and evidence", according to Missen's initial assessment of the list what we lacked was...a tank!

Nope. His dad was told by Prendergast that he would be taken with the pick that was used for Blease, his teammate. Rory was his captain. Strauss and Bennell were then chosen before him.

New house, new dogs, the darl has moved over. He is happy. his folks arent particularly but accept it. He was looking forward to the Demons at the time. Says he is a one club man.

What a pity! I like Sloan"s courage and great competitive streak.... essential qualities for any AFL recruit or decent sportsman but seemingly not on Prendergast's check list at all! .... if those two qualities were mandatory for Prendergats's draftees we would not have drafted players who shy away from competitive situations like Morton and the serial jibs like Bennell.

From memory Adelaide have done well with players we have overlooked ... Dangerfield / Morton, Talia / Cook, and Sloan / Bennell. There are probably others but i don't want to look.

It's specualtive what may happen to us, re: draft picks, whether this year or future years. Thus casting in doubt which direction we should go come draft time, not knowing if it may be our last decent pick for a while. Do we go with the outside skill and pace we crave, or the crash and bash physicality that Neeld wants and appears the direction in which footy is heading?

It's a tough choice, but contested ball is king. The first team to get their hands on the ball, gains the advantage. Sydney showed this over Hawthorn's polish in the GF.

We simply must draft Wines. Sure Toumpas is an absolute gem of a player too, i'd have him ahead of Wines currently, plus his scope for improvement is greater, imo. However, going by this article, http://www.heraldsun.com.au/afl/todd-viney-well-aware-of-the-competitive-nature-of-potential-draftee-ollie-wines/story-e6frf9io-1226509826657, Wines wants to play for us! Despite all that's going on around us, he still wants to play for us with his best mate. There is but no other choice than Wines.

This one excerpt alone, is the reason why we need him. "One club scout recently said if Wines landed at Melbourne there would be "explosions" in the centre square, adamant the pair were the toughest inside midfielders in the draft pool."

If we don't get him this year, maybe we can pinch him off GWS in a couple of years time.

Yeah thats going to be an option for all clubs.

In 1-3 years it will be the chance and time to poach off GWS and Gold Coast, just like they poached our players.

Lets hurt them more than, they hurt us with Scully!

J not so sure they hurt us with $cully but saved us from the high cost of trying to keep $cully... no way was he worth anything like what melbourne would have offered to keep him, I think will spend to compensation picks and $$'s we save on him to get pretty good players.

Just on the general theme of list management and filling a clubs needs, a really nice piece released by Rob Kerr (via AFL.com.au), the National Talent Manager at the Lions. Goes through the Lions strategy during the free agency and trade period and the areas they felt they required strengthening in.

He also provides some thoughts on our CHF of the future Jesse Hogan. Lions were apparently right into him, with a view to installing him as Jonathan Brown’s successor. Worth a read.

Found this bit interesting regarding the wait on ruck rules: -

Initially his manager indicated some reluctance to consider Brisbane given we have Leuenberger and Longer as young rucks on our list. On that basis discussions stalled until the new ruck rules were announced. At this point the coaches felt that the days of the wrestling ruckman were numbered and that athleticism and versatility were going to become even more critical for ruckmen. On that basis, we re-engaged with Stefan and his management and discussed how he might fit on the Lions’ list.

in my opinion it might not be about what we are lacking..

its what we are waiting for to develop.

If trenners, Sylvia, Tmac and a couple of others bring there game up to another level. we wont be lacking that much

Curently we are lacking 50 to 70 games into Jack Viney, Ollie Wines, Rory Taggert, Max Gawn and Jessie Hogan. Once all these players finish their apprenticeship we will have the depth to go with Trengove, Clark, Frawley, Jones, Mc Donald, Blease, Dawes, and Grimes.

The future looks good

I agree the future looks bright. But 50-70 games for all those players is going to take 3-4 years.

I want to be in the eight by 2 years, im sick of losing

I would hope we are challenging for a top 4 position going into finals by the time these guys are at the 70 game mark.

Our list relative to the comp is as least as good as other middle of the road clubs. Our Major problems are exclusively off field. Never seen a football side play with so much apathy and disinterest as last season. This tanking issue may be a huge blessing in disguise. Finally may rid us of the real cause of our arrested development and lack of soul. A few draft picks lost as punishment pale into comparison with the mismangaement of a genaration of our young hopefuls.

and I want to do the no-pants-dance with Kate Upton but wishing aint gonna make it so

you did not need to make that comment, as you were probably fishing for likes.

It's not about wishing.

its about having talented players and bringing in experienced players, and them finally showing something as a group..

actually I did need write it, your comment was stupid. 'I want to play finals now' that's great mate. I would like to win the flag now. We are talking about the reality of the situation here. You don't want to wait 3-4 years for players to mature well there is no way around that one is there. So maybe you should think through your own posts before criticising others

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
