Wines, Stringer and O'Rourke in that order of preference. I'd have Toumpas before those three but I doubt he'll be there at our pick.

I can not agree that we have good inside midfield Jones is reasonable, stands out in out team, but not a star, has to learn how to pretend to punch the ball once he falls on it and is tackled. McKenzie is a tagger not really an attacker, Silvia, hmmm best position is half forward is not consistent enough for the midfield in my opinion. and Trengrove is still learning, not a great year this year. We need insides and outside midfielders any of the 3 would be a great addition and probably be starting first game with Viney, I wish we could get two decent mids, but we will probably need to give away our 20th pick for Dawes, so may need to go with a recylced player like Rodan which maybe enough to get us through the year.

We can only take one so I like Wines and doubt that Toumpas will be there anyway.

Grundy will also be a very god player but I doubt he'll be here either.

The thing is they are all competing against their own age group at the moment and the silky skills and great kicking skills can easily disappear under the pressure of an AFL game. So of all those that are available I have more faith in Wines being able to adapt to senior football than some of the others.

Wines for me and if we get him I will be a very happy Demon.

I think O'Rourke will be the most complete midfielder.

Can win it on the inside and has exceptional skills, pace and endurance.

Here's what Martin Allison, former Calder coach, says about him:

"He has exquisite kicking skills, which makes him stand out. Whilst he's more than capable inside the contest, I think his strength is on the outside," Allison says.

"He glides across the oval and he's a fantastic runner. So I think he's going to be a pretty handy acquisition."

I wouldn't be unhappy with Wines but I really want a skillful mid with pace. I get the impression Wines is a josh caddy battering ram but doesn't really hurt the opposition with his possessions.

His higlight reel is full of hurtful possession use as is Toumpas'.

i'm going with O'rourke, simply because we need outside players. I think we already have good inside players (Jones, Viney, sylvia, Mckenzie) but we don't have very many outside midfielders for these guys to give it to. O'rourke adds a fair bit of class too which we definitely need. That being said i would still be very happy to have wines in our side :)

Don't be surprised if we take him, I'd prefer Wines but I think the club really like O'Rourke.

I would hazard a guess that Neeld and Todd Viney are all over Wines. Big bodied, ball magnet, competitive, mates with JV, hard as a cat's head, good skills.

I want a Dustin Martin, Patrick Dangerfield type bull-at-a-gate with our pick that is ready to go from Day 1.

Wines for me.

What happened to Stringer?

Falls into the category of other.

Who's the closest to Patrick Dangerfield?

That would be O'Rourke I reckon.

Wouldn't be disapointed with O'Rourke at all. In fact, until I read that article where Viney & Wines spoke on eachother I was hoping for O'Rourke.

The article just swayed me as I reckon having both Viney & Wines at the club will be great for our culture as these two will drive and push eachother to get the best out of themselves and their team mates. Also like the sound of Wines' leadership and the fact he hates loosing.

Time will tell as to which way we go I guess.

Edit: Stupid computer.

Lets face it, whoever we get... Be it Wines, O'Rourke, Grundy, Mayes, Stringer or any other kid.

We will all be a lil shattered that we didn't get Toumpas.

I've been pushing for Toumpas since 2011 so will be disappointed if we don't get him.

As long as Whitfield, Toumpas and Wines don't go 1, 2 and 3 then I will be happy.

I wonder who BP would draft at pick #4 if he was still in charge. My guess is that he would have had Barry shortlisted for pick 4

It will be interesting to see MN's drafting strategy should we take the ruckman Grundy (or should he be available) at pick 4. That would mean we only recruit one high quality small midfielder in this draft (Viney). Most here agree that our midfield sucks and the main priority this year was to get a number of very good mids. So far in the trade period we have seen good results in seeking KPPs. ATM, we have Jones as our only elite performing mid. Whilst Trenners, Grimes, et al might become A graders, I was under the impression that we were going to target very good mids this year. Or do we wait until next year's draft?

And yes, I am aware that a ruckman is considered part of the midfield.

Next year we will only have 1 high pick most likely remember, unless we do so sh#t and get another PP which is unlikely.

I would imagine we will take pick #4 as a mid and next year around pick #6-8 as a complimenting mid to debut with Hogan.

Could even result in 2 top 5 picks 2 years straight. (Viney & Pick 4 this year) and (Hogan and First rounder next year)

Unless you've seen a lot of these players it's difficult to make this judgment and I haven't seen enough of any of them. I haven't seen any of them play live. I have seen them on Foxtel, as well as the TAC Cup GF on computer. So anything I say should be taken with a grain of salt. My contribution is based as much on theory as anything.

Toumpas - does everything well. Good pace, great kick, great decisions, great runner, real leader.

O'Rourke (183cm) - classier than Wines. Quicker and a better kick, but also a good contested ball winner.

Wines (188cm/90kg) - big bodied mid who excels at winning contested footy and distributing to others. Solid skills, but not elite.

Grundy (202cm/100kg) - athletic ruckman with a healthy dose of nastiness. Will play a lot of senior footy in his first year.

Macrae (189cm) - smooth moving tall and quick outside left footer with fantastic evasive ability and a knack of kicking goals. Great kick.

So who to choose ? In order:

1. Toumpas, but won't be there.

2. Grundy, I doubt he'll be there, but he'd be too good to pass up - despite our desperate need for quality mids. Will develop into arguably the best ruckman in the game. In due course, Clark, Hogan and Grundy would give you a genuine crack at a flag.

3. Wines, premiership midfields are built around hard nosed big bodied mids. You need outside class too, but AFL footy is all about winning contested ball and Wines and Viney would be the engine room of a quality midfield for a decade.

4. O'Rourke, I really like this guy and reckon he'll be a consumate mid for a long time.

5. Macrae, you'd take him in a flash at pick 4 if you were Sydney, who already has the hardnuts in place. We don't and Macrae is unfortunately a luxury we presently can't afford.

Conclusion:

As much as I've listed Wines at no. 3 I'm hoping and expecting he's the one that falls our way. You just can't go past big bodied contested midfielders who accummulate the footy. Having Grundy ahead of him is based purely on "best available talent" at pick 'X'. But, like others. I can't see GWS overlooking him. If they do it will be fascinating to see what Melbourne do.

I haven't included Stringer, because I reckon pick 4 is too early. There's debate whether he'll be a better mid or forward and right now there are a couple of genuine mids who are ahead of him.

An uneducated guess as the only knowledge I really have of these guys is based on the write-ups on here and BF but I've gone Toumpas just as he seems to be rated a highly skilled player who can complement guys like Viney and Jones. However he will be gone by then so Wines it is who will be great for us I think as he seems to have the right attitude and desire to hit and be hit in the contest. He also seems to be a decent finisher and likes a goal which is something our midfield sorely lacks.

Pick 1-5 is such an easy one to [censored] up.

I rate Toumpas and Vines on a par after watching their reels.

If we get one of these guys I will stop whipping myself over past errors.

How is that burn? If BP was in charge we wouldn't have already recruited him...

I think something was lost in the delivery - you are indirectly damning a new recruit by saying he would have been a bad recruit in this Prendergast hypothetical.

It would have been a damning recruit if BP was in charge and had taken him at #4 (Which is something he potentially could have done)

Please don't twist what I say like that, it ain't cool

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
