In all honestly, if Dawes is as good a forward as we can get, I'm all for focusing in mids and putting games into Fitzpatrick and Williams as forwards instead. Either one has more ability and upside than Dawes and I think is a better long-term prospect. If we do need to get in another tall forward, don't go halfway, target someone with real ability.

The last ten "Pick 13's"

2002 - Byron Schammer (Fre)

2003 - Brent Stanton (Ess)

2004 - Matthew Bate (Melb)

2005 - Shannon Hurn (WC)

2006 - Jack Riewoldt (Rich)

2007 - Brad Ebert (Port)

2008 - Tom Lynch (Stk)

2009 - Daniel Talia (Ade)

2010 - Seb Tape (GC)

2011 - Taylor Adams (GWS)

Bit of a mixed bag but you're roughly a 60-70% chance to land a quality player at that pick.

Then again if you're us those odds probably go down to 20-30%.

You do realise that it makes no sense whatsoever to list only the pick 13's when analysing the merits of that particular pick ? The entire field beyond pick 13 was available at the time, but these were merely the players chosen at that pick.

List all of the players taken between picks 13 and 20 to get an indication of the talent on offer each respective year.

Sure, it's not razor sharp analysis but you can still get a fair idea of what you're dealing using that view. And I'm too lazy to type out 50+ names and clubs!

As long as you realise it's a futile exercise, because you've turned a large sample into a minute one, but supposedly trying to extrapolate meaningful data.

I dont mind taking dawes if it is for a reasonable cost to Melbourne. Problem is that Eddie seems to think that anything out of Collingwood is worth 4x the market value even if they dont want it. He will want a top pick for his discard and Dawes will want top $$ to come to us. I would be inclined to pass if they are asking too much, Melbourne has seldom had any luck with big named recruits, i.e. for those that remember past failures Diamond Jim Tilbrook, Kelvin Templeton, Peter Moore, etc..

Look at what other options are available, they maynot be as big as Dawes but they may have other attributes that give them real value.

I'm able to do that owing to innate inutitive abilities which transcend ordinary modes of data measurement.

It might be a tad harsh to label Moore a 'failure' given he won a Chas Brownlow in red and blue colours.

Agree. 3,4,&13 don't even mention them. Swap for Martin or Petterd ok. Swap for compo pick we get for losing Rivers and Moloney if second round ok. He is worth far less than Wellingham and they are talking high second round and maybe Stevens. Dawes is not Tippett and I could see Fitzpatrick passing him in a year.

Get hogan and wait. It will bear fruit at some stage

Sure just like Jack Watts.

How many pages of Hogan threads will I have to wade through before the fruit ripens.......

....or falls off the tree?

Stuff the minindraft and hogan enough talent in this years draft

What other Forwards at 97kg with a yearning for pack marks with a beep test at 14 are out there? I can handle having a 17 year old monster train with us for a year, play at casey and then play round 1 2014. Getting Hogan won't hurt our chances of finishing top 4 next year. We won't finish top 4 anyway.

When we picked up Clark every announcer had there opinion that he was not worth the money and would not bring anything to Melbourne.

I do agree we may have spent a little bit more that what he is worth but he was the only tall forward available at the time and Melbourne did what they had to do to get him which I applaud them for that.

After the half a season he played for us a lot of the critics changed there view on Clarky.

With out Mitch Clark we have No Forward line, we need a player like Dawes.

Clark was always going to a great pick up. Dawes on the other hand would be nothing short of a disaster.

I'm not sure if you watched him play this year. I enjoyed watching stuff up each week and now we are looking at picking him up cheap. I've always said let price be your guide to quality.

The problem is that if the team lacks forward targets, then it will hinder the progress of the rest of the team (specifically the midfield), who will have to play in an unsuitable style. I think that the FD is looking at bringing in players who can provide a presence from the very first day, so that the youngsters can develop around them.

These players may only contribute for a couple of years (like Byrnes) but they are important because it will allow the game style to develop more effectively.

The lack of these players (and the sole reliance on drafting 18 year olds) is a recipe for slow development and bad habits.

Oh yes, of course, one the one hand he won a Brownlow at the Dees and with other was key in the abject failure of the club.

Good post!

No he wasn't but the attitude around the club and the reason for getting him was. The need for a messiah was placed ahead of the need for team. He regrets ever leaving Collingwood for Melbourne and that is an indictment of the culture around the club at the time It's a culture that's been around for over 40 years now and I'm pretty sure we all hope it's finally starting to make way for something better.

Well if it wasn't for a hand injury he would have had a much better year.

I'm pretty shore Neeld knows him better then any of us so if he thinks his the man Im willing to back his judgment.

Demons pick up Dawes. Swans pick up Tippett. Sounds like a fair comparison.

Dawes was good in 2010 and Tippett is over-rated for mine - he gets easy delivery from their mids and this season has had less defensive pressure because of taylor walker (who I rate more highly than tippett).

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
