FAREWELL STEFAN MARTIN - SEPTEMBER 2012

Featured Replies

Martin is the best ruckman in the comp at the moment. He is proving that Leigh Matthews is right and hit outs are essentially worthless. We should get him back next year.

Won't come back now but I'm glad he's sticking it right up Collingwood tonight. I don't know for sure but at one stage it was told he was offered in a trade with the Pies but they knocked him back. Perhaps he could have been traded to them as part of the deal that got Chris Dawes to the club.

Anyway, he's already up to 30 disposals which was what we used to expect from Jeff White when he was at his peak.

Yep another great descion by neeld to trade him.. He always showed promise, I'm not suprised his shown this form. Would be a lot better on the list then fitzy & spencer. Having said that I think he relishes the #1 ruck spot and rucking alone. So not sure how he'd go playing the Pedersen role as forward- part time ruck. But gee I wish he was still on the list.

Just continues spreading egg on faces. 32 disposals at 75%, 7 marks, 27 hitouts. This bloke is just destroying everyone. If he was still at the club, everyone would be singing his praises.

A poor decision by the club. Martin is sticking up us not Collingwood.

Absolutely dominated tonight.

He would be silly to re-sign with Brisbane unless they trade Leuenberger. Both players need to be first ruck.

Always liked Stefan thought he could be anything but always got an injury just as he looked like taking command of the first ruck posy for us. But there was no doubt he could play but there seemed to be issues with his attitude when Neeld came in. But then being an intelligent type he was probably appalled at the culture Neeld brought in and didnt conform to the requirements of the time. Mark it down as another stuff up.

Oh and by the way have the Pies been tanking or something? How else do you get smashed by the Lions at the Gee unless you have developed a losing culture from tanking? That is what I was led to believe two weeks ago, by Paul Roos and Caroline Wilson. Perhaps with Collingwood its a hangover from the 2005 tanking for the Daisy Thomas pp!

What is going to happen with Stef once Leuenberger and West return?

he'll probably be a bit steff

always liked him, happy to see him doing well.

didn't agree with trading him away at the time, but i've got used to players starring once they leave us, so i'm not surprised.

Like who?

In any case, Martin was traded 2 seasons ago ... where was the Steff-love and the "we should have kept him" this time last year?

was he traded or delisted?

Cant even remember

He was traded for a bullshyte late 80's pick just to get rid of him. He is a No 1 ruckman. If he is as smart as they say he is he should look for a club that will give that role permanently. Would love to have him back to replace Jamar.

I was at a dinner which Stef attended not long before he was traded. He wasn't confident of remaining at the club. His form hadn't been good for a while and he had been under an injury cloud.

I believe that most at that time felt his career was limited and Brisbane, when it took him, had him pegged for a relief ruckman under the new interchange regime. As it was it took him 1½ years to cement his place in the team.

To paint his departure as anything other than business as usual in the world of football trades would be a gross exaggeration of the reality at the time he left the club.

Jeff White at this peak was winning 90% of the tap outs to advantage. Martin played like this at Melbourne when he was allowed to ruck all game, but he is usual well beaten when rucking and cannot take a contested mark over his head. When Leuenberger is back, where do you play him?

I think you'll find he loved to run around like a headless chook, with no accountability and no discipline. No blocking, no shepherding, no commitment.

Enjoy the QAFL, Stef.

Hows this going for him JR?

Even most of this year you still classify him as a dud. He is making you look very silly with egg on your face.

Im glad Martin is sticking uo the haters. His form alone will be seriously considerd All Australian.

Neeld GAGF

He was traded for less than value - the club lucked out when the pick we traded him for turned out to be Dean Kent.

And he was a terrible AFL footballer - typical of the 'let's draft a basketballer' era....

Jees Jumbo you make the big calls

and they return to bite you

Even most of this year you still classify him as a dud.

Considering he didn't even play till Round 12, and had done next to nothing in the preceding 2 years, that would have been a fairly reasonable assumption.

A dud? No just someone who had injury problems. He showed huge potential in 2011 and blokes as athletic as him dont just give up for silly little picks.

Nicholson, Terlich, Magner, Evans are players I would classify as duds.

What is going to happen with Stef once Leuenberger and West return?

He is ahead of both of them ATM. Certainly far more value than West.

Leuenberger when fit is still a fair bit ahead of Stef 'Redleg'. If we were lining up and picking players in the schoolyard I would be taking big Leuey...

Stefan has really come on this year though, there is no doubting that. It's a pity he didn't get a clear run at it with us.

Pick 48 in an open market and nobody else wanted him.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
