Wowee. I've even heard MFC players and coaches talk of Watts needing to lift his intensity, but you can't see it. The guy plays on his own terms, picks and chooses the marking contests he'll enter, and often lacks urgency.

What do you watch when you go to the footy ?

I watch the footy, Watts reads the ball, if you actually stay on your feet you are more useful on a lot of ocaasions.....don't believe everything that is written...Watts was dropped to Casey for form

Are you honestly saying that you believe Watts attacks the ball with intensity?

The guy reads the play, he has elite skills, amazing potential and scope to be an MFC superstar... but intensity at the contest is 100% his biggest weakness.

So if we reframe the question to be what ONE thing would you like each player to improve upon during this preseason it seems that for Jack Watts the consensus view is lift intensity.

And here's a few others (if they stay). For Jeremy Howe - practise set shots for goal; for Aaron Davey and Matthew Bate - learn to kick on the right foot; for Sam Blease and Jordan Gysberts - improve aerobic capacity; for James Frawley - improve awareness

1. Kidnapp Wattsy's family and make him fight people for their freedom to give him some intensity.

2. Get Sharrod Wellingham

3. Bulk up the players

4. Promote Dan Nicholson

5. Make sure that Mitch Clark is right to go for round 1.

Perhaps we can get Liam Neeson to coach Watts over pre-season

Forgive me, but did you watch any footy this year? Neeld and co did practically nothing in a football sense this season apart from trying to develop a competitive unit at stoppages. That's why we were so boring to watch most of the time. If nothing else, we improved in terms of our ability to be competitive at the stoppages. What we did after that was generally more of a problem.

Exactly! But are we a top 4 or even top 8 tackling and stoppage team yet? I doubt we are, so I'd do it again.

I hope not. The last person he picked to coach turned into Darth Vader.

Demonland in a nutshell.

Everyone always says "Gym this, Gym that" and has been for the last few years, when clearly our biggest problem is the way we play and our skills, not how big we are. Cale Morton was a better player when he weighed 68kg or whatever, perhaps the time in the gym to bring him up to 78 has hindered his skills and run, that's my take on it anyway. Plus, most of our players seem to have enough muscle on them, Moloney, Sylvia, Jones, Tapscott and Jamar all come to mind. Trengove looks very muscular too. I know some of our players get thrown around at contests but occurrences of us missing targets and weak/slow running are more frequent

Morton was never good, many were simply seduced by his high possession, low impact games early on.

Reckon I've seen an episode of Coach's Box with Neeld saying we were at least top eight in terms of contested possession and clearances in the second half of the season. A dysfunctional (or non-existent) forward line was just as much of a problem as the stoppages after about round 10.

That's not to say we stop working on that part of the game, of course, but we need to broaden the focus.

Get out

think it just shows "better" is a subjective relative term

T

Get out

So averaging over 20 possessions in the back half, showing good dash, kicking a few goals when going forward,a rising star nomination, and the general consensus about him being a rightful high draft pick yet you don't agree with me? And the fact that he was never dropped. (40 games in his first 2 seasons)

1 DRAFT some muscle and aggression.

2 Start recognising and respecting the skills the cuurent list have instead of trying reinvent them as players they just cant be (if they still arent good enough then there will be turnover again next year)

3 TARGETED fitness work again

4 Take a lead from the Hawks kicking coach and 'teach' them to kick...it didnt just happen over there by magic you know.

5 In all practise game play Watts up forward double teamed with Tom Mac and Chip/Riv

.....Play him 'wherever' during the season, but let him know its 'get into it' or 'get out'

Posted

1. Send Jeremy Howe out for goal kicking practice, tell him not to come back until he can take a speccy and convert the shot on goal

2. Get the whole team practicing their kicking and marking and make sure they can hit each other on the chest from 15 metres away

3. Trade/sell/dispose of Cale Morton

4. Recruit some hard working, skilled, ready to go midfielders

5. Employ a reputable and experienced sports psychologist

Out of 46 posts on this thread, I haven't read one that says something along the lines of, "I hope we draft some players with elite kicking skills who have an influence on the games they play in."

EIther that or some players on our list greatly improve their own kicking skills.

All I want for Christmas...

All didn't no the best place to post this so I'll throw it here. Had a great chat with Chris scott earlier tonight at a bday I was at (brad was there too but didn't get the time to chat to him). First of all, top bloke and very down to earth.

Among other things I quizzed him about gys, riv, caddy, his thoughts on melb etc thought a few would be interested to no!

On riv: not keen unless all else fails (didn't go into details).

On gys: laughed at me when I asked. Played dumb and said he's small, but then asked how I rated him - tbh seemed keen.

On caddy: no news here but every Melbourne club is going for him, including melb

On neeld and fd: rates neeld big time but doesn't really give much time/thought to the dees as they have been non competitive.

Anyway have a good weekend all!

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
