Ling no go as mids coach

Carlton made a play to get Cam Ling as an assistant, as did GWS, but he's staying with Channel 7 for 2013.

Shame, would have loved him to take Royals spot should he not be around.

He sure could play in the greatest side in the modern era.

Its a good start.

Tim Watson played in the all powerful Essendon side.

Paul Roo's played in mostly poor sides (the Swannies were just ok)

Jezza was one of the greatest players ever who good at the Blues and horrible at StKilda

Walls at the Bears ? Knights at the bears ?

On this basis you wouldnt hire Neeld or Sanderson as coaches - both ordinary footballers.

There is a vast difference between playing and coaching. There is a vast difference between being a great communicator as a Captain like Jonno Brown is and a captain who is not a great communicator but leads by example -Chris Judd (by all reports) and there is a huge difference between a great follower of plans and having the ability to formulate and implement them.

We would have zero idea if Ling is a coach or not.

Exactly. So you get in his ear and find out.

If you walk away you never learn anything.

If he has no interest in coaching fine.

So do we just walk away?

I'd like to think that if the Club believe that Ling is our man, that they would make an offer that is too good to refuse.

Everyone has their price.

Like Malcolm Blight at StKilda.

I have no problem if he says I want to coach and goes to the highest bidder but I dont want anyone at the club who really wanted to do media but the money was too good to refuse coaching. Your heart is either in it or it isnt.

Wow! I heard about 6 months ago that Ling's business interests meant that the cushy job of 6 hours on a weekend sitting on the boundary at the footy was sufficient for his fix for involvement in footy. In light of that, I'm absolutely stunned that he's turned down a 60 hour a week job.

I'd like to know what offer is going to be too good to refuse when the guy's already making quite a tidy living with a fraction of the stress of being a top level assistant coach.

He did say he would like to coach one day. Maybe he loves being involved with footy? That's a pretty good start.

Ling has very good credentials to be a coach and at this time we are talking assistant coach, not senior coach. However if he was really serious about it if it were me I would take the Carlton job as it would give an insight into one of the best coaches in the modern era, broaden his knowledge. Having said that I would love him at Melbourne and yes we should have a serious discussion with him.

You never know for certain how someone will go as a coach but if you have seen Ling address players as he did with the GWS boys and see the respect he has with current day players then chances are he will make a go of it.

Tim Watson played in the all powerful Essendon side.

Is Tim available? he would make a great assistant if he was, didn't make it as a senior coach in a basket case club but has a good knowledge of the game.

If we're looking for a new midfield coach and Ling's out of the question and Ratten is headed to Port as it sounds like could be the case, I'd be pretty keen to get Woey back!

He did good things with South Fremantle I think it was and has overlooked and young and improving Brisbane midfield.

Lets get Woey back to the club. If nothing else he'll teach them all about professional preperation for the game. Was ahead of his time was Woewodin.

Forget Ling, lets start operation 'Get Woewodin'! He'd be cheaper also!

Why not start a thread call Fantasyland and merge this one with the Cloke and Goddard threads...all nonsence without any reality quotient....it could top 1000 posts on 50 pages.

Ling doesnt want to be an assistant coach....gee, who would have thought?

But didnt he give a talk to GWS? Surely that means he wants to live in the city and coach MFC.

Anyway what does Neeld have to do with it?...'Land should start a petition

Is it time now to speak his name again? It's only been ten years.

Shane Woewodin.

A midfielder ahead of his time in training effort, known for intelligently targeting relevant and practical strength, who excelled beyond his 'natural talent'.

Then coached very successfully at the state level with East Fremantle, and has for a few years now as midfield coach at Brisbane overseen the progress of guys like Redden, Rockliff and so forth, a few of whom were later picks partly on account of fitness and commitment questions.

I'd love to have him back at the club, for all the right professional reasons, with the 'prodigal return' a bonus.

Good post Nut. Wont be understood where its needed most.

QED. Missed the point as usual.

And he would be coaching a crack midfield in a top performing club with a great culture which is highly financial......Oops wait a minute we are talking about MFC.

It's obviously now a moot point, but Malthouse thought enough of him to inquire; and Cameron Mooney who played with him thinks he wants to coach one day and spoke of how well he communicates and how astute he is. Clearly he's shown he's an effective leader.

I suspect he'd be an excellent coach down the track if he's prepared to do the necessary groundwork.

That is exactly why he is worth sounding out.

He will return to AFL down the track.

Don't go bringing facts into it Ben, the apologists and naysayers will find a way to shoot you down, most probably along the lines of "yeah well it took Mick how many years to get a premiership at Collingwood? What would he know?!! I've got stacks of posts on Demonland ridiculing every man and his dog, so my opinion is worth more!"

This thread is insane.

Person X, involved with football, does not become Melbourne coach, but instead chooses to do something else. Reaction from Demonland: did we go after him? Did we offer him a contract? Why didn't he accept? Why aren't we being proactive enough.

It's ridiculous.

Not everyone associated with football wants to coach. Not everyone who wants to coach will be any good as a coach. This club's job is not to ask anyone and everyone who might be a possible fit.

LIVE AND LET DIE by Meggs

The Demons’ impressive late season charge to finals will most likely come unstuck this Saturday evening when the Bombers blow up the also-ran Blues in the Ikon Park double-header.   To mangle McCartney, what does it matter to ya? To have any chance to play next week Narrm has got a job to do and needs to do it well.  We’ve got to give the Pie sheilas hell, say live and let die! It’s Indigenous Round for this game and the chance to celebrate and engage with Aboriginal and Torres
