Sylvia was exceptional today. He tweeted that he wanted to stand up for Brad's last game and he did.

I am a strong Sylvia supporter and have shown it on this thread, but today is what I want to expect weekly.

He is a class player but he needs to understand not to kick up the feet now, have a few beers and pats on the back but to get to recovery tomorrow morning and do exactly the same next week.

It took Brads farewell to getting him to click. He played well from all accounts.

Is it too cynical to think what happens next ?

True ability is released from within, not without.

Okay he was great today, however the rest of the season he has been okay but mostly uninspiring. I'm sure a lot of people will claim injuries or what not but after seven years of the same sort of stuff (uninspiring with the odd blinder of a game) it has to stop. If Colin can put his hand up and say "from now on, I am prepared to take a leaf out of my mate Jonesy's book and give 100 percent every damn week", I would say absolutely hold on to him. But the fact is if he is around next year (even next week) he will return to his usual self, uninspiring and lazy with the odd flashy touch here and there.

I would probably have to agree that he is almost the most talented on our list but all talent and little drive leads to not much on the field. What it seems like is that he loves the idea of being a footballer. I think Col would benefit us the most by being traded out of the club. For one, he would have value I think and could develop into an important part of a strong team, with strong leaders and individuals to influence him, which he doesn't have here and I think has been a big influence on his attitude over the years. Moreover his attitude here is probably not beneficial to the younger guys coming through on the list.

So basically I think it is time Col and the club parted ways. It is amazing how some people are defending him after one quality game. Being the best on the list as some people are saying, you'd think one 34 disposal game isn't enough to justify that tag.

One quality game? He's been pretty good for the past couple of months after coming back into the side. Do you want to retain consistent (consistently s**t) players like Bate etc instead do you?

Not at all, I would prefer us to eject all the players that are holding the club back and bring in good solid hardworking players via free agency and the draft. I think Neeld has the same sort of idea considering 11 players contract talks are on hold.

You have a go at a poster earlier about having a low post count meaning they don't watch much footy, yet you say that about his season. Maybe you should heed your own advice. I could count the number of players on one hand who have played as many good games as he has played in the last 2 months, in the entire season.

Take a look at his second half of the year and he has actually been pretty consistent. Neeld highlighted as much in a recent press conference and like it or not, he spent the first half of the year regaining fitness after suffering broken vertebrae. He is one who does appear to have taken Neeld's message of hard work.

Trade talk is ridiculous. How shite for how long do you want us to be? Trade away one of our very few with any real talent. Please.

A full pre-season with no injuries and under Neeld i believe Col will flourish.

Actually I was talking about the content of some of the stuff he posts, not the number of posts. I think a good game mainly depends on the calibre of the player and what they usually produce and as most of the people defending Col have been saying he is borderline elite, all class etc I think good games for him have to be like today. Averaging 17.5 disposals a game and under a goal shouldn't cut it. I am happy to be proven wrong going into next year but I just think he will revert to his usual self.

In regards to consistency I mean more over the duration of his career. I actually think we don't have to be shite for very much longer. If we play our cards right over the free agency and trade period (especially) and use picks well, we can turn it around rapidly.

How many possessions he's averaged this year is irrelevant. Sylvia had an interrupted preseason and then the spinal injury in the NAB. He was always going to start slow and build his way into the season. He's been among the better players in the second half of the year and I'd love to see what he can produce next year if he gets a full preseason under the belt.

The man is custom built for AFL footy and he would provide some genuine class in the midfield, something that is sorely lacking at the present time. I'd love to see him spend 85% of his time in the midfield and then rest him forward.

He's actually been clicking for over a month now, finally leading from the front.

Lets hope this is a new front from the Sylv due to the new footy dept.

Every year.

People have saved this template. Insert the "coach" or "year".

Almost 27, and if history is any indication it will be another couple of seasons of the same sort of thing until finally everyone will be saying that his best is past him and 'oh why didn't we trade him when he had value'.

Posted

From the outside, it seems that Neeld has told him a few home truths about the end of his career and it appears that Sylvia has responded. I would be very surprised if he was traded as his second half of the year has been good, after an injury interrupted start to to the year.

Colin Sylvia again showed today how vital he is to our future. He has the skill, pace and ability to be a key to our future.

DO NOT trade away one of our very few good players with real skill. His year has been good considering a ruined pre season. His last 8 weeks has seen him behind only Howe and Jones.

For those with IQ's sub 50, get real. Use your players with onfield weapons. Don't trade them.

He played a good game today. So what? He played on Thompson most of the day and he had a good game too.

Sylvia has tried in the second half of the year but after 8 years I'm done with him. Good trade value, he's gone.

If Colin Sylvia was a girl, you'd all call her a c*%k tease.

Yep and after all these years I've decided to go home to my wife. I'd take a second rounder.

me too

I reckon Jaded summed it up beautifully. He knows that occasionally he HAS to play. Incredible that it takes a "last gam' for a mate to really release the hounds so to speak. Some are suggesting hes been firing for a lot of the year ( second half ) . Well quite frankly thats simply nowhere near at he CAN do as was shown yesterday.

It was almost rubbing our noses in it. Some will no dount suggest that there are those of us just never satisfied. With Col weve been givenno reason TO be satisfied.

After god knows how manygames ( ok 137 ) he puts on a little bit of a cameo. Funny that thats only a handful more games than Jones. Look at the difference in attitude and application between these two.

It will be interesting to see his destiny.

Whats the chances of him playing like that ALL the time and quieting all his nay-sayers ?

Col gets another year for mine. But keep him hungry...

how exactly do you do this ?
Posted

Col will stay next year. Neeld likes him and sees him as part of the future. With Green gone and Moloney's future in doubt, we need to retain experience, talented players who are starting to show that they can perform under this game plan.

The only way he will go is if he seriously doesn't want to play for us and wants out.

Definitely must keep, he's been one of the few that seemed to have gotten better this year! We may be [censored] off that he's been inconsistent over the years and that its cost us, but THIS year, when he's been back, he's has probably been his most consistent yet. Im not sure why, in a team bereft of experience, people want him gone now. Maybe its hard to believe in him now?

I could argue that having a tiny, low spending, crap FD, hurt sylvia more than most over the years. Maybe he's one that really needed and responds to the external drive, focus, attention of a professional mutli coached FD?

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
