Thanks for your appreciation , I was talking to John Turnbull at the games and he made comments similar to Emma, the depth is not there,I also agree- and I have been watching this comp for over 20 years now. No where near the depth of last year IMO.

All the more reason then, to use all our Early Rnds picks Ourselves, & use our 3rd Round + picks for mature age & bodies/trades.

Your sarcasm should be zoom zoom

I like the idea off using our first 3 or 4 picks on Mids this year.

JV will be in there somewhere, And Whitfield sounds like the good runner we need.. Along with JV, Vlastuin would be good inside the stoppages.

http://www.google.co...DayAvXg&cad=rja

Whats Jimmy Toumpas like? size, speed, gamestyle, etc?

Hrovat???

Stringer also sounds good with a bit of height as well.

Haynes is another one I would look at "Dee" may be lucky enough to pick him up around 12, very quick, versatile and over 190cm already.

If we could pick up Viney with Vlastuin then someone like Haynes I think we would be well set.

It seems this year will be largely dominated by midfielders at the pointy end of the draft. I reckon Wines is another that could be considered. Another competitive tough inside midfielder/clearance specialist. Would pair up nice with Viney I would think. I agree with the suggestions that we should aim for 3-4 midfielders in this draft... wouldn't mind it if we could nab Stringer as well.

Looks like a busy player in the youtube vid's, 6' 2" in the old, but one paced. He looks a good worker.

A player with some class, agility & zip would be handy to balance our inside brigade. maybe a Toumpas, or someone tough enough to play inside yet all class. We need to find a Craig Bradley type.

MFC will pick up outstanding players this year. We have put on many resources in our recruitment area, headed by Viney.

The list is being vetted to see whom can stand up to a vigorous training regime over the next few years. We lack speed, stamina whilst I feel we have the grunt already on the list. Whitfield will go too early for us,as I feel we will have to pick up JV with our first pick.Hrovat, would be my first pick, however, very small, SMART, quick, got stamina?, good kicker as well.

We have been quite brilliant in picking mid to late picks in recent years however, not so good in early ones. This year is critical and the club realises this, looking at all areas. Now Clark has joined us and has been a success, opens the doors of gaining other experienced players which we could not gain previously. We will be very active in the free trade area, VFL & other leagues( what a pick up Magner has been), however Neeld & Craig will place their faith in developing further our current list.I expect most probably about 7 changes. With Viney at the head, we will pick up ,not just talented players but dedicated hard working ones that will be able to stand up to the rigors of the changing requirements of AFL football.

A player like Stanton or Thomas whom gains the ball, has speed, stamina ,great kicks to a Clark, Jurrah ,Howe forward line I feel would be a priority as well as a seasoned young defender like Lockwood from Williamstown would be another great asset if he could stand up to what is required. This game against the Giants will show us if we have the talent on our list to develop, if not we will trade, or get rid of more than the 7 , I expect to go at year end.

Have you seen much of Jimmy Toumpas ? He sounds exactly like the mid we need to get some class and speed in there.

Yes, I have heard that we've beefed up our recruitment and will be searching under every rock. And I also appreciate that the new coach wanted to spend a year having a look at our existing players before making a decision on them. We'll see some of them jettisoned at year's end.

More important than me, Todd knows him,due to his time in SA, whilst I did watch him last year and his first match this year. He did not play last week. Not only talented but a good leader, willing to learn and grow. Like many, the type that would suit us.Also plays senior football already.

no thanks, give me a selwood or a lewis over either a motlop or rioli with our first pick.

Haven't the selwoods stopped breeding?

Which Lewis family are you talking about?

I am talking this generation.

With Motlops and Rioli's you have a 50% chance of getting an elite player; what are the MFC's results with first round picks. I would suggest 25% and that is only pretty handy footballers.

If old man Cyril Rioli was a racehorse he would command command stud fees in excess of $200,000. The only two duds that I know of were Willie who went to the dawks for a year but was too small to mix it with the big boys and a daughter who nrver played footy; was a handy netballer but.

The NT was ignored for years and that is why older Motlop's never made the big time but in the NT the Motlop name is legendary. The younger generation speak for themselves.

I think you can guarantee that we will draft players who are hard, both mentally and physically. No matter what other characteristics are sought, these will be non negotiable.

That mental 'hardness' is tough to see in an 18 year old...

I just don't want them to get near any psyche analysis - steer clear from placing teenagers in a Bucket of Behavioural Prognostication © and I am happy.

I disagree with the first part. The scaffold of a persons character is often all there at 18, it just develops further. I think back to when I was that age and we all knew who were mentally hard and going to succeed. A decade or so on and nothing's changed. Mental hardness is there to see at 18 and we should be looking for it as a prerequisite and not be seduced by 'silky skills' or physical attributes.

i also think this is somewhat wrong.. Look to other sports , especially olympic style events..and swimming in particular. You can see the kids who 'mihgt'make it quite early. they have the resolve and mental toughness to train hard and persevere. they abdicate from the lifestyles of much of their age group and show considerable mettle and endeavor to suceed.

These qualities are often a litmus used by the various Inst of Sport to gauge who has it to go forward and who wont. You can teach someone to swim, you cant teach them to compete, not to keep trying...and trying ...and trying.

You haveto be mentally tough and doggedly determined tocontinue in the face of failing (orr seeminly so )

Collingwood, in particular, are very high in seeking mental toughness. Neil Craig is also, he and Charlie Walsh whom worked together at both the Adelaide FC and Bicycle Australia looking after mainly the young 17 year olds believe mental toughness is a very high key in the success of a highly competitive sport. like the AFL.They need also to be hard working along with skills. One recruit whom I am looking at watching at Etihad on the 4th July is Sam Mayes-profiled here today on the AFL- http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/139146/default.aspx whom, I strongly believe would be ideal for us.I have watched him for 3 years now- and I think he is a corker, very suited to our team whom have several SA boys now with us.

What I am getting at is the pyscheand behavioural profiles that push the Franklins and Darlings of this world down in the draft - it's BS.

I am all for looking for mental toughness in kids, but I think of it as closely aligned to testing and I wholeheartedly reject that (which is why I was pleased we didn't bother with that with Neeld).

I think I understand what your getting at- but some champions have had deep behaviour issues- Nicholls, Tuddy, Carman, Croswell, Kekovitch just to name a few..I wouldn't mind if we picked a couple that turn out like any of them.

Just a quick heads up to anyone that hadn't heard. Fox Footy have decided to show both games on the 29th live, I think It's Vic Metro v's Vic Country & SA v's WA at Simmons Stadium. Obviously the week after It's live again on Fox Footy from Etihad.

Article on Wines. Interesting to read that he is best mates with Jack Viney. Described as a classy and clean strong bodied midfielder, he is averaging 26 disposals in the TAC cup. Last two games for Vic country netted him 31 (17 contested) and 24 disposals (7 clearances) and rated in the top 3 for Vic country (Whitfield taking both BOG honours).

Worth Bottling

Where's Serhat Temel these days?

Any chance of having a look at him now that he's matured?

This is great news. I am hoping that once the agreement to broadcast the Foxtel Cup goes that Fox Footy further increase their coverage of the U18 championships for all rounds as they have the rights to do this, I am pretty sure that has greater interest than finding the best second tier comp in Australia.

LIVE AND LET DIE by Meggs

The Demons’ impressive late season charge to finals will most likely come unstuck this Saturday evening when the Bombers blow up the also-ran Blues in the Ikon Park double-header.   To mangle McCartney, what does it matter to ya? To have any chance to play next week Narrm has got a job to do and needs to do it well.  We’ve got to give the Pie sheilas hell, say live and let die! It’s Indigenous Round for this game and the chance to celebrate and engage with Aboriginal and Torres
