Bring Back Brock?

I'm not suggesting it as a long-term measure. It'd be a stopgap at best. We're hurting bad for onfield leadership, we've identified it clearly. But something similar - experienced player on the outskirts, although flawed - is almost certainly what we should be looking at to help the blokes onfield.

IMO Neeld will recruit some 23 - 25 year olds with developed bodies who are AFL standard players

Magner is a an example of what can be found in the football wilderness

We have a large void of this type of player and it hurts us every game we play

Brock is no longer up to it and was really surprised Carlton thought he was

...........Agree. And given Richmond had 65 inside 50s and monstered us in the clearances, Miller with 2 gimmes out of 3 goals hardly impressed why would should have kept him.

The main difference between then and now surely is that someone has told him he is allowed to stop and kick when in range - immediate handball is not a requirement. He got the pill enough when with us, just wouldn't / couldn't kick it. Poor coaching or structure?

We lack class in the midfield.

We have Magner,Couch and Moloney to provide the grunt. Meat and veg midfielders are fine but lets not overload on it.

No. He kicked one goal from a gimme and then took a mark 20 metres out and converted. Maybe he can tell Clark you dont play on from a mark 15 to 20 metres out

Gee there are a lot of ppl here who are quick to slag off posters coming up with ideas. Just cos you don't agree with the idea doesn't mean you need to resort to ridicule.

If you look at form in the VFL last year Magner got recruited but Brock performed very well, and as Striker said he is on a list with one of the best damned midfields in the comp. Barely any of our midfielders would be playing ahead of who Carlton have in there.

My recollection of the last 6 months or so that Brock played with us was that he was constantly struggling to get his body right for the rigours of playing AFL, (and we weren't at AAMI so still had the junction oval as our facilities) and his form was reflected in this too.

Strongest memory of his time with us was the amount he spent @ debt demolition to help out the club.

It's not the worst idea that I have heard Striker, but I suspect we have recruited.... or have similar players to Brock currently playing on our list. ie. Magner, Couch, Jones, Moloney.

I couldn't believe our luck when Carlton paid what they did for McLean. Doesn't bring in anything we need to our midfield now.

Thanks for the laugh to that guy who said he offered the leadership we need though.

I know, he's a bloody tortoise and we're hurting for pace. But he was 2nd to Magner in the VFL last year and is still clearly playing well despite simply not being wanted by the Blues. Clearly on the outer at Carlton. Will have a year left on the deal, but we have so much cap space it wouldn't matter.

Offer them our bottom pick in the draft and bring him back? It'd be a role model for the young mids to look up to.

Captain of the magoos. Could he would he just teach?

No mention of Shane Valenti??

I do not want either, and especially do not want a bloke you just decided he did not want to play for our club. For someone who is labelled as having leadership qualities, i'm not sure I want any of our current players to follow.

I'm trying to remember who we got with the draft pick we got for him. It was Gysberts wasn't it at 11. Wouldn't swap that deal for anything. Let's hope he picks up once he's back from injury.

Although the notion of bringing him back is pretty silly, i dont think we should have let him go. He was a leader and could have helped the club over the last few "junior-less" seasons

In what way was he a "leader"? I think you're stuck in the perception everyone had of him in his first few years.

He ditched us didnt he to go to Carlton? Probably saw wheels falling off then but didn't realize the souped up engine he was bout to walk into. Wasted talent like one T Johnstone but clearly to slow

Anyone know what Travs up to these days?

Not a role model I'd like in the team we're clearly trying to move on wouldn't you say

True and there is no doubt our biggest void is class

It is why we turn the ball over so much

I wasn't just referring to the midfield and used Magner as an example

We didn't "let him go", he chose to leave and join Carlton......

We got a pretty good deal as he was traded for a first round pick (11 or 12'ish from memory).

But I'm pretty damn sure he was not sacked or released by the the Dees, he chose to leave this club for another one.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
