Melbourne v Brisbane - Pre-Match Discussion

Pretty good side I guess - Real shame there's no Jurrah at this stage to add a little sparkle to what is essentially a workman-like team.

You didn't notice a Tasmanian going by the name of Howe on the team sheet? :-)

Im just rapt to see Grimes out there. On paper it looks like a good team.

What do we think about the 1 min applause rather then the silence. I noticed thats what we are doing tomorrow. I like it and Ive seen how they have done it over in the premier league and obviously last week at croak park. The 1 min silence can be spine tingling stuff but I think the applause is a nice touch and I guess we are applauding for everything JIm did and the person he was.

Anyway Im excited about footy being back.

BTW - has anyone heard/seen Ben Hur today? I have serious concerns for his wellbeing, especially after the teams were announced and Watts has been named on the wing.

Ah Billy. I feel like a cat does when it plays with a ball of wool.

Post #23 four days ago on the Team for Round 1 thread: "Watts is presently better suited to a wing than a key forward role, so lets see what he's got up the ground at AFL level".

I named Watts on the wing in that post and followed up with the above summation. Btw, as I state in the post, my team was how I wanted to line up.

You are fun, Bill, but you've got to stop. I'll get fur balls soon.

Really like the way Neeld is utllizing the senior players with Green at CHF and Rivers at CHB. I think its been an issue that melbourne hasnt milked as much as possible out of the senior players in some occasion which has been a big problem of the Bailey era.

i very much doubt they will line up that way.....esp green

you should take advertised team placements with a grain of salt

For someone as inteligent as you BH, I thought you would've seen the sarcasim oozing out of my post. Time for a cuppa tea, a bex and a good lie down buddy. You've been good the last couple of days leaving my posts alone, don't finish the week on a bad note ok?

So I would guess the actual first bounce line up would be:

B: Joel Macdonald, James Frawley, Clint Bartram

HB: Jack Grimes, Jared Rivers, Colin Garland

C: Rohan Bail, Jack Trengove, Nathan Jones

HF: Jack Watts, Stepn Martin , Jeremy Howe

F: Aaron Davey, Mitch Clark, Brad Green

FOLL: Mark Jamar, Brent Moloney, Jamer Magner

I/C: Matthew Bate, Jordie McKenzie, Sam Blease

S: Josh Tynan

EMG: Lynden Dunn, Tom Couch, James Sellar

I dont mind it. Forward line looks extremely dangerous.

I think we should cool it on judgements of players without a game being played.

We are pissing into the wind when we write-off players before Rd 1.

I learnt this lesson in 2008 when I posted that Garland is not a player and will be delisted...

Just a point on our slow midfield, if you have been to any training sessions in the pre season, they do work on repeat sprints of varying distances, the top group meaning the guys who could continually do it at high speed included Trengove, Moloney, Jones, Bate and Bail, as far as I can remember in our game you don't tuck the ball under your arm and try and outrun your opponent for 50 metres, that happens inside AAMI Park.....you just need to be able to get to each contest for 2 hours....Blease and Davey hunting in the fwd 50 will do me, and Howe is no slouch either

Hands up who put Peter Sellar in their 22 as soon as we drafted him?

I reckon the Lions are in for a brutal contest if we get on top in contested possessions as the coach and team personnel imply we will.

Grind them down (Jamar, Jones, Moloney, Magner, Bail, Bartram, etc...) then open them up (Grimes, Howe, Trengove, Watts etc...), with a solid spine (Clark to Frawley)...

Bring on Saturday and season 2012

I wouldn't really call what they did sprint sessions, It was repeated 150-400m runs it was about endurance and your endurance guys will feature. If it was about speed Davey and Blease would have been in the first group not the last.

I agree with a prior post, you can be fast by the way you move the footy rather than pure leg speed. We do however lack players that can accelarate from the contest and run at the defensive lines, this then creates space as you draw defenders to you. This is why Yarren is so important to Carlton, he runs with the footy and puts pressure on the defensive.

It's the "opening them up" that has me concerned this season. Who are going to be our elite ball users moving into the next few years? Was going to be Morton/Gysberts but we know where that sits at present.

The names mentioned need to take some big steps forward if it is to be them.

Agree that lack of pack can be countered by good ball movement but it has great importance when you dont have the ball. I thought last night's game was a great example of that.

And good ball movement is dependent not on pace but on the desire to work hard and keep spreading and keep presenting options. I keep rabbiting on about Nat Jones. Definitely not quick but works his arse off to present an option.

    GAMEDAY: Rd 16 vs Brisbane

It's Game Day and the Dees are deep in the heart of enemy territory as they take on the Lions in Brisbane under the Friday Night Lights at the Gabba. Will the Demon finally be awakened and the season get back on track or will they meekly be sacrificed like lambs to the slaughter?

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.
