Cant think of one good AFL commentator.

Jobe Watson and Jimmy Bartel provide excellent special comments. Rather than retelling what one can see, they explain the tactical play. That they are relatively recently retired also means their game style knowledge is current.

I'm in France so the only Australians I hear are the commentators on the footy on the AFL app through my Melbourne overseas membership. No offence, but the Aussie accent is a shocker if you're not used to it. And Kellie Underwood has the worst accent by far. Her voice makes me cringe and our windows rattle.

Brian Taylor doesn't know the rules. Eddie is annoying... Somehow there's a reference to the mighty Pies no matter what the game. Dermott is a mansplainer. Meanwhile Dwayne Russell finds everything incredulous and Huddo screams at us. And Bruce is... well, Bruce.

At least Dennis Cometti was entertaining, but I don't get him any more.

I urge anyone with Kayo (and I assume fox footy) to listen to the matches through the radio links on the AFL website . You can choose any station that airs the game and play it through your Bluetooth speaker.

You'll just need to pause the TV for about 15 seconds to sync it up.

I refuse to listen to any match with Bruce now and even Huddo who seems to love to see us fail and sounds condescending at times.

I can't begin to tell you how much more of an enjoyable experience it is.

Absolutely my go to. Just gotta listen for the bounce and hit play

You're right, though - Geoff Leek was  a gentleman, unlike the screamers around today. Understood the game.

"Can you hear me, 'Arry? Can you hear me?"

Love it. Poor Tommy. How would he have gone with zoom calls? "Can you see me? I can't see you."

Well there you go...I think Jobe is dreadful, states the obvious time and again.

Adds nothing.

The eye of the beholder.

I don't know why anyone takes commentators today seriously and personally, just tune out and watch the footy. But honestly as guy who missed that era I would have loved to listen to Harry Beitzel I can see where Rex got a lot of his influence. Thanks to Youtube I can actually get a glimpse into what he was like as a caller and apart from being an entertainer he really didn't miss a beat. Leek I've really only read stories about but people really liked his kind manner and relatable nature and maybe that is what is missing. We all listen to the BTs and Brayshaws and Russells and while I'm sure they are decent blokes just all sound like clowns who would be d**ks in real life.

I’ve found Luke Hodge quite insightful in games he’s been at the ground for in Brisbane this year.

Its funny because it highlights the massive gap between the modern game and the commentary. He’ll often explain that a team is pushing an extra player to the contest or restructuring, and why. The commentators can’t build from that though as they don’t understand it, so they just say ‘Great stuff from Hodgey’. It’s embarrassing.

I know commentators have to talk games up, but what drives me nuts is Brian Taylor going into non-stop hyper-babble overdrive because he thinks somehow a team that has kicked 5 goals for the entire game can suddenly kick three goals in the last three minutes to win.

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
