'Training The House Down' --- Official MFC pre-season updates

Pre-season update: Bail to Evans

Pre-season update: Fitzpatrick to Jurrah

First two in the series, covering each player alphabetically up to Liam Jurrah.

Nothing much to report really. the main point of interest is that Leigh Brown (forward coach) does the reports on both Davey and Blease, seeming to confirm that they're both being looked at as potential forward pockets.

Why Blease in forward, i don't get it?

I thought the same thing. Maybe his speed will be utilised in a similar role to Davey, using his pace for forward pressure.

Will be interesting to see if that's where he ends up.

Posted

Well , we've been losing a lot with certain players in certain positions . Neeld will most probably try some players in other positions and hopefully that will work .

We saw Blease play a bit off the HBF and he looked good but is that his true position ? We need blokes who can kick goals . Neitz was a really good CHB but went to FF . Neeld has to move things around to try and find a winning combination .

The way we've lined up in the past clearly doesn't work . Reckon we're in for quite a few surprises this season .

At a guess, I would say that Sam hasn't the fitness to play the midfield yet and his defensive skills aren't up to scratch. I see Sam moving into the midfield when he builds his motor with more pre seasons under his belt

Good observation, this is the most likely explanation so far. But can he kick goals? From memory he missed a few opportunities last year. Albeit that was probably after running half the length of the ground and having nothing left in the tank for the kick.

AAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!! I knew it, I said it in the 'Dees find crumbing forward' thread that Blease may be on a simiair program to Aaron. Haha, him and Davey up front at the feet of Clark, juicy!! I picked it!

Maybe they envisage the same for Sam Blease, seems to be much like Davey this pre-season, struggles in the same areas, am I sensing a Davey-Blease combo???

I got told I was wrong, well well, some need to look outside the square, I am liking the sounds of this, the Blease-Davey combo, hoho the speed, is anyone getting even more excited for this season to happen already??

Posted

From what I have seen at training Bleasey has been playing forward but high up the ground. I don't think he'll be playing as crumbing pocket type. He seems to be pushing up to the contest then bursting forward. I hope that makes sense?

Posted

I dislike sugar coated reports like these. All positives. They could just say "Everyone is doing well" and be done with it.

It's a shame that we have to assume that Blease is going to be playing forward rather than Brown giving us a rundown on what they have planned for him

You may be right, but I think that's a long shot to conclude they are being groomed for the forward pocket. We know both have not been running well (endurance wise), may purely been related to progress.

Don't take them so seriously. Would you prefer they were mainly negative? No way in the world are they going to be 'realistic'.

Sorry Macca, nice avatar, but I can't help hearing Kramer's voice read out your post every time I see it.

That's the whole idea bj ! I don't want to be taken too seriously . It's just opinions after all , with the odd factual account . We all like to get our points across in different ways . The best posts in my opinion are the ones which have a "serious" element about them laced with a bit of humour .

As for Kramer , he's fairly cluey in his own way , is quite popular with the ladies , never needs money , never works , has some wild and wacky ideas - some of which have worked in real life ( The Beach ! )

All in all a very good role model !

Brown should know about playing in a forward pocket. That was where he played the best.

was very underwhelmed by these reports...no actual news

Yes Chippy , we'll get at least one . We're starting to tick all the boxes at the Club now . To win a flag we will need some real stars but first of all we need to play as a Team . This was Norm Smith's doctrine and it will always be the right way . I'm hoping the first thing us fans notice is our defensive pressure all over the ground . Some players aren't cut out for this kinda stuff and they need to make up for it with better than average skills . There will be a few casualties under Neeld .

I reckon you need 6 star players to win a flag incl at least 1 backman and 1 forward - Frawley , Watts ( in a year or 2 ) , Trengove , Sylvia and at least 2 others are going to have to be the stars .

Oh , hang on , I'm getting all serious again ..................................

It is often quoted that Norm Smith said that football was a very simple game. He told his players the first thing they had to do was to get the ball then kick it,today probably handball. He also said the game was always in 3 phases, we have the ball, they have the ball or it`s in dispute. Seemed to work in the 50s. Maybe not today

I will take these vague rose coloured reviews of our players over next to no information provided on other clubs websites. You take from them what you want and they at least promote some forum discussion.

I agree. You really can't expect any significant information so don't criticise the club for these reports. Why tell the enemy clubs your status just to help those supporters (me) suffering from of-season withdrawal symptoms? And you'd be mad to state what is wrong with a player in public - who wants to be humiliated like that. If it ever happened you can assume the coach thought such a shock was the only way to help that player fix the problem. In the meantime all we can do is read between the lines and speculate.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
