Pretty strange attack. He's from Taiwan, he has a Chinese name and yes he's of Chinese appearance so even if this sounds odd to you, this is what makes him a selling point in China.

Using the NZ/Swedish link shows you're looking at it how we would look at it, which is different to how the Chinese do. Here it's about the culture you grew up in, so if he grew up in Australia, sounds Australian, then yeh, he's Australian. But in China it's about race, you ask any taxi driver if a Chinese person moves to the US and has children there, those children will still be Chinese, so will their children's children. And as RobbieF has mentioned already, Taiwan is very much a part of China in the minds of the average Chinese population.

It's like when the Chinese used to say that non-Asian people would never be able to speak Chinese fluently because of how we're genetically made up, they thought only Asians would be able to speak it. Then people like ol mate Da Shan came along and shat all over what the rest of would consider a ridiculous theory. In this case, if Lin Jong can play well and be successful at AFL level then it presents an opportunity for them to support someone they can relate to and also show them that if they put in the work, they could have a chance at playing AFL in Australia as well.

As someone who has lived in china over several years this frankly is a ridiculous argument. The Chinese do not distinguish between Chinese of other nationalities and those born within the borders ( hence Australian Chinese business people of Australian citizenship are not protected by Australian or international law. To the Chinese, they all come under the rather dodgy Chinese legal system. How many European Australian business people have got into trouble in china over the last 10 years - none)

He lacked confidence in his early years but has really come on, being consistently one of their best overall. At188 cms tall, has played in many positions even played finals in the ruck.

The whole Chinese thing is silly.  Sponsorship, selling games etc etc.  I have eluded to this before somewhere on Demonland, and in sit downs with mates.  But I'm gonna say it again.  There is no sustainable market outside this country we live in for Aussie Rules Football.  Nowhere.  Why?  Because they (foreign markets) dont get it, never have and never will.  They don't want to watch it and are completely not emotionally invested in it.  It really is that simple.  Aussie rules football developing a chinese or american market for example, makes me chuckle.
