The Melbourne website seems to have been updated. It now reads 28267.

I think I misread this morning and it was always 28, 267 not 27, 267 hence the confusion.

I can't work out for the life of me why we would be lower this year same time. We had no reason to be more optimistic same time last year. Maybe people are just more resigned to our likely fate this year?

I can think of a few reasons we should be higher this year - Mitch Clark, new coach, Jimmy.... A bit weird....

I didn't believe the figures quoted here so I checked the MFC website this morning and it definitely said 27267.

There are some good reason why our m/ship could be lower

Poor on field performance in 2011.

Poor off field performance in 2011.

Uninspiring pre season form.

Too early to see if initiatives undertaken under Lyon...new coach, Mitch Clark have taken effect.

Jimmy standing down early this year may have had an impact.

People cutting back on discretionary expenditure across the board.

This time last year was on the back or a relatively exciting 2010 season for supporters who had endured the pitfalls of 2007-08-09. So there was some reason for further improvement.

Fwiw although it matters little to many, we are comfortably ahead of the same time in 2010, and even further than that of 2009 comparison. Last year was also an earlier start to the year with 24 rounds. Let's see where we are around Round 4.

That is positive, although i would believe facebook is an indication of our younger supporters, (no offence to anyone) and as we have such a traditionally older membership this seems to be backed up with the facebook figures.

I think the bias towards younger people is going to be greater on Twitter than it is on Facebook.

Not exciting enough, dont win enough, don't know enough about them, not value for money, profile isn't high enough. The typical wheelbarrow of antipathy.

As a supporter i demand 100% from the team i follow I find it hypocritical if I in return aren't 100% committed. It borders the repugnant to opt not to be a member for $10 a week. You become so much more than a fair weather supporter, but part of the lifeblood of your club.

As an MFC 'supporter' you have an obligation to become a member in my mind. A historically low supporter base, a supporter base that is weighted towards an older age group. It's a responsibility to get signed up to ensure a strong club.

1000 members could represent anywhere from 15,000 to 30,000 dollars for us this is significant.

To base buying a membership for the MFC on hype or perceived return on investment is so disheartening.

I'd rather keep the people who don't have a membership but barrack for Melbourne 'in the fold', rather than label their behaviour as repugnant.

I've been buying a membership since I was 16, but I can understand that others have different financial priorities, or those who weigh up a membership in terms of cost/benefit ('how many games will I get to and how much enjoyment will I get from seeing games this season?').

OD... note that he said "...win at least 4 out of the first 5 winnable games" - for some on here, that could mean by round 24, in which case membership numbers won't be affected ;-)

Which season? ;)

Well in that case, I wasn't mistaken and the numbers have jumped up by 1000 today!

I think we need to keep in mind that alot of people buy their memberships at the first game and during the last week before the 1st game.

When compared to last year the 22nd March was on only 5 days before our first home game, this season it is 9 days away( with a weekend inbetween).

I think we would be better comparing what it is the monday after our first home game.

Might be something to this. Victoria isn't doing so well in the economic stakes versus some of the mining based states atm. And besides, lets face it, we've never been one of the well-to-do clubs out there $$ wise in the past. Even when we've had a little success. Always bemuses me when other supporters call us silver spooners, snow goers etc. We have our % share of well-to-do members/supporters like other clubs, but nothing like the numbers existing in the top 4 to 5 clubs from what i've seen in my travels. So many opposition supporters travelling around with personalised number plates...Bombers, Pies, Saints, Richmond and Hawks in their beamers, audi's, Caprices etc. We have em too sure, but dwarfed in comparison i reckon.

Jimma's spirit is now well embedded and infused both in and outside the club. Even more so now obviously. And with extra efforts from existing members to purchase extra memberships where they can afford and other people donating some to Reach people etc etc, It's only going to grow from here.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict 45,000+ members by close off this year.

This club is about to launch like never before. We're about to witness an amazing dynasty, both on and off the field over a number of decades which will cement this club to its rightful place as one of the powerhouses of the AFL.

I certainly don't expect this to take place 'on field' in one season either. But the beginnings will be clearly visible by year's end.

Mighty Demons Forever!

That's probably less a miracle than it is Jack Jack not clearing the history on his web browser by clicking F5...

I have never received a membership renewal. Pathetic.

Rang the club last week and renewed my 6 memberships! - must have been lost in the mail they said.

Previous years I have had a number of reminders but this year there hasn't been any. I understand it's expensive for the club to keep sending out reminders but as I am in marketing I always like to see what they do in terms of encouraging people to re-sign.

Poor from the club IMO.

I think you mean CTRL + F5, but I get what you mean.

I think it is far more likely that the membership went up by exactly 1000. (IWUAEHIIUE) (Did I get that right?)

I'm pretty sure it's a generic command, should work on all browsers.

It has gone up exactly 1000... Wierd

The membership figure on the 21st was 27868, it's unlikely it went backwards.

I'm not sure exactly what went wrong but it was probably Bill Gates' fault, it always is.

And the skinny, boney a**es... .

And the up and go kind ( non lazy) ...

We don't discriminate at Demonland, do we !?

Jaded ??

I would like to offer my heart felt, sincere apology, for generalising lapsed members as fat, lazy and possessing a set of balls.

I now realise that many lapsed members could also in fact be skinny, idiotic and in possessing of a set of boobs.

My deepest regrets.

Get this,

Just got the mother-in-law, a since inception west coast supporter, to become an MFC interstate member.

She will only attend the one game at Subi this year in round 2. It will be an interesting circumstance.

For those who view the country interstate memberships as not valid enough to be included in the overall tally, think again. All memberships are meaningful and need to be recognised.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
