Be very interested to hear what our CEO thinks about all this...He went into Bat for $cully a number of times throughout this year..

Reminds me of the Last line out of the Sex Pistols Film "Filth & the Fury"

All agreed to in October last year IMO.

They've had enough attention now. Just be glad we are rid of them.

This whole thing has got me thinking, What were his original interviews like? This kid is on a different plain to the average.

What makes this so different to anything else he'd already done?

Just as I predicted months ago. If someone can find my post for me I would like to re read it.

Out of the thousands of $cully posts I am not even going to attempt to find it RL, although I do remember reading it. It was something about him scouting for Sydney and you not being surprised if he got a job at GWS.

My care factor for $cully is less than zero, but my care factor for what was thrust upon us by Vlad and his grandiose expansion plan is still hovering around 100. Now, hearing all of this it's probably risen a bit. I do like that they have made them bring it under the GWS TPP, but the crime has already been perpetrated against us. That said, I am very happy with where the MFC sits atm, but still think we were wronged through all of this badly.

They all said things like "he has integrity" etc etc Garry Lyon said it and now all this comes out. They were decieved all along, the club must be [censored] off.

It doesn't. I just wonder why we took him in the first place that's all.

Because hes a good footballer?

Question to AFL - Were the compensation picks awarded to the club calculated including Phil Scully's wage which must fit into Total player payments?

If not, the club have grounds for further compensation, not to mention compensation for not being able to use it during trade week.

Rumour doing the rounds in Rooty that GWS bought the local Jenny Craig franchise for Mr. and Mrs. $cully.

Unconfirmed ATM but if true, would that come under the cap?

I'm no accountant but I suppose that would depend on whether GWS bought it for them to run as a going concern or to patronise as clients.

However, judging by Mr. Griffin's Scully's ... er, ample frame, I would suggest the MFC blundered in failing to recognise the opportunity to instal Cale Morton as a boarder in the Scully household in an attempt to build up his physique.

Tsk, tsk.

Don't care anymore. But it does show how difficult it has been for GWS to recruit big names, if to get a kid with questions over his knee they had to make him the highest paid player in the league AND offer his father a full time job. All this talk of targetting young stars is spin. They were not able to convince a single established star to play for their club.

I was uncomfortable about Scully from the day we drafted him. Even before that, my intuition was concerned about him, for some reason I don't quite understand. I just get this sense of wariness.

People were worried when Trengove and Tapscott both signed for an extra year early on but Scully didn't, their fears came true.

I agree, there was something about him that never made me fell like he played for Melbourne.

This $6m $cully story broke on the rumour file in early feb.

Late Feb I spoke to a local Melbourne supporter who said he had a very strong connection to Phil Scully. Apparently Phil has an involvement with one of the south eastern football leagues.

He said Phil was adamant the story was a beat up; that the first the Scully family heard of it was in the media, and that Tom was perfectly happy at Melbourne.

My contact said don't worry; looks like Tom will be staying at Melbourne. That's why i believed Tom would reject any offer from GWS.

In hindsight there was too much smoke. The media was correct; the amount was correct; and i believe Sylvagni has stated an approach was made to the Scullys during their window of opportunity in Oct 2010.

When did the Scullys first make an expression of interest to GWS? Maybe when they kept to a two year deal mid 2010, after Trengove and Tapscott agreed to 3 year deals. Maybe it was shortly after being drafted. Some have indicated he never looked happy here.

Maybe it was shortly after Jordan McMahon kicked THAT goal in 2009. A loss by Richmond would have put them at the bottom of the ladder, giving them a first pick and a chance to recruit a kid who was a mad keen Richmond supporter. Perhaps he was not impressed with our 'list management' and thought he didn't owe us anything.

He may become a champion player, but he won't do it at a champion club. At least not for 6 years, till he returns to live in Melbourne.

It seems that everyone wants to go over the same points again, like the thread that went forever on Scully already.

Every team would have picked Scully #1, to say they would not have done so is pure fantasy.

You can interview him all you like, but I dont think anyone thought this offer or this situation would come along.

We can all hypothesise and say how we felt then and now, but it is pretty simple.

We chose him. He did not do much for us other than give a bit of excitement at the start of his first year. He has gone for a lot of money. We got compensated. His father is dodgy. The AFL is dodgy. We will live on.

At least the AFL has seen it as an inducement and forced them to put in under the salary cap...

Hopefully, in a few years time they need a couple hundred thousand to keep someone - they can't, because a 'recruiter' is taking that cash...

Agreed, you can't ask for more than that. The AFL has followed through on it's clamp down on payments outside the cap. I think it's good.

In a couple of years it'll be "Phil Scully delisted to ease GWS salary cap pressure".

Posted

Will the AFL now have to reconsider the compensation given to MFC as the payments to Scully just increased by his Dad's salary (i.e. 100,000 x 5 yrs)? Not likely I know, but given they assessed the compensation without all the facts...

Posted

I hear that despite the best efforts of the AFL that Mr $cully in fact does not fit under the cap!

Perhaps a polar ice cap?

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
