Can anyone find a worse trade for us than 2007's John Meesen.

If Messen was fit he had alot to offer and pick 37 is nothing tbh? looks crap because he played 4 games

Couldn't find Craig Turley in that list.

Ellis was good value for a spell, and Holland to a lesser degree, and Pickett to an even lesser degree (good to see him line up blokes though).

But Moloney, Bizzell, and Vardy were the really good ones. Enjoyed all three of their careers at the Dees.

Wow, we selected Darren Jarman and he chose to stay in SA. Didn't know we picked him nor could you refuse to go to the club.

Yep, stayed in SA coz he wanted to go to the Hawks, told us so before the draft and then sat out the year (in the SANFL). Went to the Hawks in 88.

This has always rankled with me. In 19987 he would have been with us when he played the Hawks in the finals - who knows he may have been the difference. Instead he played with the Hawks team that flogged us in the 1988 GF

2001 Luke Moylan not a trade but

nil games.

when you look through the list there were some poor ones, I guess it is not an exact science.

Best high number pick must go to Shane Woedonin 1996 PSD 18 and then he won the Brownlow.

Are there any better high number picks than 1997 Nathan Brown 66 and Guy Rigoni 77.

IIRC Meesen was pick #37. We traded pick 29 for PJ and he was a disappointment. So was Pickett for a mix of late picks plus pick 28.

Chris Heffernan plus pick 17 for pick 12. We downgraded 5 places and got nothing in return.

Can't find all the Rookie Drafts - anyone know where?

Try this for starters.

Had already tried that. It is incomplete for Rookies

I think the AFL site has it but I haven't had time for a good search yet

Hope you have better luck than me DC

I find the AFL site poor, I always have trouble finding historial data.

But maybe it is me

Robbo @ 68 in the same year. Some good value there!

If I remember correctly, we signed Both Jarmans. And got neither to come over. Hmmn. I think they saw us coming, & they headed Us Off @ the Pass.

What about Greg Wells to carlton for Rod Ashman, but then at the last minute it all went pear shaped & we ended up with Michael Young,,, & Vin the cat Catoggio. Great recruiting coup that one, just Great.

Think you will find that was Barassi's fault. Dick seddon did the deal and it was Wells for Ashman, but then some Carltom Board members baulked. Seddon told Barassi to hold strong and we would get him but he buckled and took the two lesser players instead.

Well, what ever it was, we ended up with the softest all time premiership player, & the fastest Afro in the VFL. what a mess.

DC, great work, but James Strauss is missing.

While it looks pretty poor, particularly prior to the late 1990s, I suspect every club looks something similar overall. Clearly Geelong did well when it recruited Bartel, Corey, Enright, Johnson (and Ablett) all around the same time, but they will also have had a swathe of misses.

Biggest surprise to me? That Brad Miller was drafted in 2001. I thought 2001 was a complete wipe-out for us. And i didn't realise he's been around this long.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
