Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The word on Brad Green

Maybe next year

Recommended Posts

As I am now living in Sydney (thankfully I missed most games this year but unfortunately I watched them all on foxtel) I have not heard from Brad Green since Mark Neeld. Did he say anything during the Best & Fairest. i thought he may have announce his re-signing at the B&F. In any case, can anyone please update. It is possible I missed it.

On a separate note, I am quite buoyant for next year. Dare I say it, maybe next year.

Interesting that our captain doesn't feature in the Demonland letterhead.

Several of the players have commented on Mark's appointment but the 2011 captain has been strangely silent.

I wonder if he is looking forward to completing his career under a demanding, no nonsense, take no prisoners type coach after spending all his time so far with two who both appeared far more forgiving?

As he is our incumbent captain, I would have thought he would try to be out the front in welcoming the new coach and embracing his commitment to build a HARD team, maybe he has????? I don't like him as captain & don't think much of his leadership quality's either, hopefully Neeld can turn his footy around too.

At this point he does not have a contract!

If it was close you would have thought it would have been done before Friday night.

We are surely not looking at another Jnr. eposide!

I reckon it is another he wants two years the MFC is saying one.

Seems he was low profile on Friday night.

Or am I reading too much into this?

This is what i am worried about? Did he make a speech? Surely the captain would be expected to do so.

If the club does not re-sign Green, I will be extremely disappointed. We have a bad track record for treating club stalwarts well - and this would constitute yet another bad example of this.

Sign him up asap.

Junior is a 'track record'?

We have had a history of treating our senior players too well, I would have thought.

White, Robbo, and Yze not having that last year in and out of the side is not treating them badly.

What the Saints did to Ball is bad treatment.

Telling a bloke who is 31 that we won't give him another $300k for very little output is not bad treatment.

I am all for re-signing Green , and I think he will, but I am a little bit annoyed at the hand-wringing around here about our media-driven (and former player driven thanks Russell and Adem) issue of Poor Stalwart Treatment ©.

The Junior situation was a disaster - and didn't make any sense either IMO.

I wasn't particularly concerned about Bruce's contract, as it appears he had an unrealistic view of his worth - and I think he'll come to regret that in due course.

But as to past players, the history isn't great. I'm not suggesting any of them should necessarily have had their MFC contracts extended, but there's clearly been a breakdown in communication between them and the club, as most of them seem to have left with a lot of anger directed at the club.

Eg, Woewodin, Powell (not quite a club 'stalwart' to be fair, but a bloody good player who we shouldn't have lost to St Kilda in the PSD), Miller, Junior, Robbo, Yze, White - and possibly now Green.

And in this context I will be very annoyed if Green receives this treatment - only a couple of years ago Collingwood was desperate to get him, and it's possible therefore that Neeld was a fan. I hope this hasn't changed.

So you are worried about the communication breakdown that occurs?

With Junior this obviously applies as he was apparently not told the club was thinking this would be his last season.

But...

Woewodin and Powell were nearly a decade ago. With Daniher, Corcoran, and Fagan in charge.

I was unaware Miller had a communication issue with his departure. I klnow he had a few things to say to the board about how the FD was being run but that is another (and I believe more pressing) concern.

Robbo, Yze, and White were ageing players who felt they deserved a free year on good coin after all their successes(?) for the Dees. We were always going to move forward on a youth policy before the expansion clubs came in and we did. If they didn't see the writing on the wall then the communication breakdown was their fault.

I don't see a history of bad treatment of senior players; I see an isolated case of a captain being removed and the padding out of this 'larger' issue with the names you have thrown in.

Woey and Powell were also salary cap related. What were we meant to do? Break the rules like Carlton and get smashed for it?

The handling of Junior was a mistake, but that doesn't mean the decision was.

I'd like Green to sign a straight up 1 year contract on good money and then go out there and earn it in 2012.

Its probably a very sobering time in Brads life as he stares down the idea he is deaching his footy "end days" Might be more of a shoch than hes realised. Hes now dealing with a very different club than the one he came to.

Id be surprised if he doesnt sign for a year., maybe with a year extra ( option ) on merit.

He is a good player let s not forget that. Captain ...well... but a player..very good.

Brad needs to be honest with himslef and challenge himself to be the best hes ever been. Its al up to him.

Do it Brad, you'll feel so much better for having given it your all.

Trouble for Brad is that he USED to be a good player. This year he could only play forward pocket, and couldn't get to contests or the ball on a lead any more. The body is sending the message. And as has been seen too many times before...the game goes past your very quickly.

I hope those that say we are too willing to accept mediocrity are not the same people who say Jnr ,Miller ,Bruce etc got a bad deal .

Lets be frank about Jnr -his best year was his last one for us ,after a lot of perseverence-we owe him nothing .

Season 2011 was surely lacking leaders but some kids stood up as a result .

we are either going forward or going backwards .

Which would you like it to be?

George , i reckon he stil can be a very effective player. . Hes not one plagues by injuries hes just laden down with a job he cant do. Hes in a sense trying to do too much and accomplishing nothing. Pare thatrole back to just decent hard at it 'sensible " footy and I genuinely feel he has at least a year lefft in him. But heres a player whos had the upper hand come last two times at the table and in some ways wasnt that shy with letting the club know it. The tables are turned now.

We dont have a lot of good footy minds of the slightly older persausion running around at the moment and whilst hes able to produce a decent enough game Id keep him; not at all costs but given a reasonable look at what he brings to our game.

Id be preapred to look at his track record and consider his "captains year' just a diabolical aberation for the time being. A 1 x 1 I should have though good value to both parties. But if he cant see that its really his only sensible choice then hes always free to ply his trade on the free market..

I seem to recall that it was our policy to give 30 year old players only 1 year contracts.

I still think it's current policy.

I think many forget Junior had an 8 week calf injury in his last year.

He was in top 3 players probably 6 times in his 15 games he played.

He was turning 34 at the end of the season we cant afford passengers

the only part that was poorly managed was Junior's expectation for the end of the year.

With regards to Green he might jump ship to prolong his career but I hope

he learns from Bruce's example 8 games this year and most likely leaves the game

having thumbed his nose at the club that gave him over 220 games and life membership

but not all blame should be Bruce's he had Nixon as a manager.

He'll be offered a year he'll decide whether he can accept it or not I hope he does

I still think he has something to contribute. On balance I don't think he had

the worst year of the leadership group Davey I think was much worse.

Agree

As I recall, Junior was playing very average football when he got a "sore hamstring" in Round 11. He was out for 7 weeks - during which people like Gysberts really showed something. There was a big question mark over his ability to get another year out of his ageing legs. I reckon that was when they decided to cut him. They should have kept an open mind until Round 22 ... but even then he was a risk. As it happens, he is probably better remembered now than he would have been if he'd limped his way through another season . A tough decision for both club and player. The way it was handled - apparently led by Connolly - was the disaster.

It is obviously a tough time for Greeny ... especially given his relationship with Bailey. It will hurt him to lose the captaincy after such an awful year ... and it will take guts for him to front up again - a real measure of "toughness".But I hope a one year contract can be worked out - because he still has something to offer - and a good year in 2012 would see him out as a great servant of the club.

Maybe its too simple a thought from me as I have many simple thoughts but I think it's hard to judge a forwards year when our forward structure was woeful and our delivery into our forward line was pretty ordinary. It was only last year that everyone was raving about how good a year he had so I would think a two year contract is well earned by Green. I do think that he should not be captain. I've always believed that forwards should not be captaining the side much like a bowler usually doesn't captain a test team. You can't stand up as a captain and have a so called "captain's knock" in footy when you have minimal forward 50 entries.

We do but I reckon it's stupid and will come back to bite us one day; do you offer a one year contract to a player who is at the top of his game wins the B&F and is offered a multi year contract with another club?

Having a hard and fast rule is stupid it has to be judged on a case by case basis. Ruckmen often last till well in their 30's and offering say, Jamar, a one year contract may mean we will lose him; there seems to be no value placed on experience nowadays.

BTW Green should be offered a two year contract in my opinion.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
