Do you think that means we've already stitched him up or not necessarily?

Can someone start a SEN post on this. Perhaps after last nights deplorable effort by Michael nettlefold(this best he could do under the circumstances) Lyon belives in doing the right thing and dealing with this isssue right away.

Grant Thomas asked G. Lyon was he under the same management as R. Lyon during the interview.

Also on the hour before both Walls and Darcy advised Lyon to join the Dees as his the evryone else's best outcome

I found last nights interview with Nettlefold on FC unbelievable. St.Kilda have a very good coach who is under contract next year and plan to extend his contract. What is the hold up ? Perhaps it's R.Lyon holding back for a better deal $. Since he changed management mid-year (going to Craig Kelly's team at Elite Properties - same management team who manages G.Lyon). Given what took place in the busy off-season last year concerning the school girl, as well as their indifferent poor form in the first half of the year. Perhaps R.Lyon has had enough of the increase in grey hairs or loss of hair ?

And just maybe an enticing offer to coach elsewhere is the tonic he needs ? Or not.

If it is to happen, it should happen quickly. Whether St Kilda sign him or move on to other pastures.

They fracked around on Cousins for quite a while and looked indecisive at the end of it.

My understanding of that situation was that the Footy Dept definitely wanted him and had made a handshake agreement. But the Board got cold feet with some of the comments from their fans and sponsors and then stepped in and put a stop to it.

They didn't pay much except for Lovett and that was a big risk that could have paid off big - Lovett in the first GF last year = Saints win.

Lovett - trade pick 16

Schneider and Dempster - trade pick 26

Michael Gardiner and Birss - trade pick 43

Peake - trade pick 48

Gamble - pick 90

King and Charlie Gardiner - trade pick 90

Polo - pick 103

Dawson - Rookie pick 13

The Luke Ball deal was a fiasco though.

They did pay quite alot..in terms of precious spots on a limited list.

$5 million for 5 years.

First $cullys $6 mill., then this. Idiocy.

Reminiscent of CEO's ludicrous salaries.

Rediculous.

Don't agree...........if you sack a first time coach, and determine you want the best available experienced coach, then it's inevitable you are going to have to dangle a mighty fine carrot to get a coach to leave their club, particularly when they are still contracted.

Nettlefold didn't look confident at any stage last night. I suspect they're fighting a rear guard action to try and win him back.

Not easy when a big offer with more years of service is on the table.

Lyon's management would be negligent if they weren't looking to maximise his pay cheque here given all the bites he must be getting and that he would be in the top 3 to 4 of the options available.

The "spirit" and "intent" of the Lyon contract is for another 12 months - compare that to Eddie MacGuire - "If Mick decides to go elsewhere we will go legal"

I think the there were some references that were sought by the Board at a late staqe which added to the supporters and sponsors. They did seem to vacillate over the issue.

Great call........coach yes, recruiting input no!

Lovett, Dempster, Dawson, Peake, Gardiner, Polo, Gamble are examples as to why.

You gotta remember he was in charge of a top 3 team at the time. He didn't have the timetable available to choose all kids. He needed depth and fill needs quickly. He nearly got there,,, except for they're losing culture. when they got in front in the dying seconds of the Gran' fianale', the saints put their hands in they're pockets.

Why?

How much do you think Essendon is paying for their coaching Team?

How much to you think Clarkson is getting?

How much do you think we would have to pay for Malthouse?

Good people cost a lot of money. If we are serious about wanting to compete then we have to spend money getting the best people to our club.

We are basically head hunting one of the best coaches in the league away from another club, it’s not going to be cheap. If it pays off then the $5 million will be made in Premiership memorabilia alone!!

To me the only way Lyon will leave St Kilda is if he and the ST Kilda Board want a different direction. What happens if Lyon goes to the board and states this list is at its end we need to trade agressively and start a rebuild. When asked who do we trade Lyon throws up names like Goddard, Dal Santo, Roo, the board isn't happy with this and believe they have the cattle to win a premiership. All of the sudden the coach and the board want to take the team in different directions.

The board may also be looking at Geelong and thinking maybe a new coach might just give this group one last crack.

I think Lyon would do a wonderful job with our list TBH.

I think our list talent-wise is better than St.Kildas (I think our core young group will be better than theirs in a few years and with more depth) and Lyon would be silly not to play more attacking football with the ability at his disposal. He also wouldn't take laziness from the players or inconsistent efforts.

I disagree, all that has to happen is for Lyon to go to the board and tell them he wants to coach MFC - they're not going to force him to see out the last year of his contract - they don't want a coach who doesn't want to be there.

That's complete and utter bullsh1t - they fought it out to the bitter end in both matches. Against Geelong it was Scarlett's brilliant toe poke and against Collingwood it was a cruel bounce in front of Milne that prevented them from winning. In the dying minutes of Collingwood draw Riewoldt took an inspirational pack mark 4 deep on the HBF that he had no right to make and kicked into the corridor to set up a scoring opportunity. Lenny Hayes kicked a longer goal than he ever has on tired legs. They fought it out fantastically.

Spot on!

And if either of those had have eventuated, we would be no hope of getting him!

It is that simple agree but he has to want to coach the MFC and to me to only reason he would leave St Kilda is if him and the board disagree on something, it could be 2 years instead of 3 but IMO it will more likely be the direction of the team. Ross Lyon is on Record stating it is the end of an era, if the board doesn't agree with his statements we have a new coach.

If he signs with MFC no matter what the real reason is at the press conference both St Kilda and ours the reason will be stated that St Kilda and Lyon had different opinions on the direction of the club.

He might simply think it's the end of an era and time to move on, no need for direction disagreement - his direction is outta there.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
