Was on the radio this morning and basically said we should have been investigated more for our tanking and if it was Hawthorn or any other club, the AFL would have come down on them hard like a ton of bricks.

Said the AFL let it go because Of Jimmys health. Now I can handle Jeff saying about our tanking but dont bring Jimmys health into it and say thats the reason and besides Adrian Anderson cleared us.

Attempt to devalue any compensation picks if required? He was a politician. He already knew Anderson said it wasa non issue.

The AFL could have investigated WCE, MFC, Carlton and Hawks to name a few over the past 5 years. They did not and wont.

The AFL have nothing to gain by proving that they have been asleep at the wheel when there was commentary and circumstantial evidence that this could have been happening over the years.

And given the disposition of Stynes and his watermark on the rebuild of MFC, they are going to look extremely mean fisted and poor in the public's eyes if they attack MFC.

In the absence of a really big cache of proof then its another storm in the teacup.

If the AFL really want to deal with "tanking" they should eliminate the PP.

Kennett just being Kennett. If he hasn't been in the media for a while, he'll take any opportunity he can to hear his own voice and put Hawthorn back in the spotlight. We must have been getting too much press (even if it was for bad reasons) for his liking.

How quickly people forget how the Hawks attained priority picks during 2004-2005.

Simple way to deal with tanking: allocate the first round of draft picks based on the team which has waited the longest to win the flag. GWS/GC/Freo go off year of creation.

Thus:

1. Western Bulldogs

2. Melbourne

3. St Kilda

4. Richmond

5. Carlton

6. Fremantle

7. North

8. Essendon

9. Brisbane

10. Port Adelaide

11. Sydney

12. West Coast

13. Geelong

14. Hawthorn

15. Collingwood

16. Gold Coast

17. GWS

Works for me!

Is he for real? They won a flag thanks to their tanking for Buddy/Roughy. Hypocrite.

I have a different theory on Jeff and the MFC,

I actually think he does it to stir us into action.

Believe it or not i think he has a soft spot for the Dees.

Some of what he said holds water e.g. what will Gary achieve it 3 months?

I think he is trying to push Gary into a longer committment.

The reality is any club that tanked has done so within the rules (maybe not spirit) of the game, so an investigation into it even if it confirmed that they did do it cannot punish them anyway. The AFL rules would be the only thing that could change.

Well thats the long and short of it isnt it. Its not that any riule per se has been broken just the expectations of some.

Personally Id have been disappointed had we not taken advantage of where we were at. I was glad we learnt the lesson of the previous year.

Funny how Carlton are very quiet at the moment !! lol

 ...shhh...tanking doesnt exist....ask Vlad !!

Jeffrey always has an interesting take on history doesnt he....always has his own version handy to refer to  especially when he's forgotten things that even hes supposedly said or agreed to.

Posted

Maybe they should hold an inquiry in to clubs that have good lists and hire incompetent coaches like Peter Schwab, is that a form of tanking?

If it was "within the rules" then that just means that there is no rules covering tanking

Jeff being Jeff. Thought it was funny though that he said "Gary should butt out", Is Jeff the pot or the kettle i always mix those two up.

I'd happily see Melbourne lose Scully for nothing if it meant I got to see Kennett's face when Hawthorn is stripped of the 2008 Premiership for tanking.

Others have covered some of the key issues here, but fundamentally, I see nothing wrong with what any club has done regarding their own list management during the priority pick era or before. Eliminating the priority pick (with or without a lottery system in place) will at least get rid of the stigma around 'tanking'. Lo and behold, clubs down the bottom will still shelve injured players and play kids for the future because it is in the best interest of the club.

Kennett has a basic and flawed understanding of list management, a short memory, and a woeful inability to keep himself out of the business of others.

What great lateral thinking. I'm impressed!

The Presidents of both (currently strong and well performing) clubs, whose coaches may be eyeing a career at Melbourne beyond this year, have made a point lately of trying to flame the MFC in the media. Granted, I think that JoKe would rather see the back of Clarkson, but I am certain his mind would change if another premiership was delivered in 2011.

From what i heard/saw in the Bailey press conference, no where did bailey admit to tanking... Also, it is in Bailey's best interests to blame development, for his poor win/loss record..

This latest outburst by Kennett is a toatl slight against a man who is terminally ill...absolute disgrace!!!

I want someone at the club to come out and make a statement against this publicity [censored]!!

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
