No once we nominate him as Father son he is ours, the Father son bidding takes place at the start of Trade week if someone below us on the ladder is willing to use there first round pick Jack will cost us our first round pick. The Compensatory Picks for Scully don't come into the picture at all for Father Son only you standard Draft picks. Due to the club committing to Viney the clubs below us on the ladder will make us give up our first round pick in the draft.

Technically not quite right ddr. Its our next pick AFTER the best bid pick.

This would only be our first round pick if someone bids a pick LOWER than whatever OUR FIRST ROUND pick will be

i.e. a team that finishes LOWER than us on the ladder in 2012 who bids THEIR FIRST ROUND pick

Having said that the most likely outcome is that it will be our first round pick as there would be no downside for all clubs to bid their first round pick given MFC have already signed a contract with JV and stated they are prepared to give up a first round pick..

Isn't that what he said?

Does that mean that compo/priority picks cant be used by other teams to force us to use a first rounder ahead of our first round pick (s)?

Indeed. He is no shirking violet.

His breakaway speed from a clearance, could be very handy in an 'Inside mids pack', with Trenners, Viney, Beamer...

We have to either let them have him for the pick offered, or match it by offering our next best pick, in which case we get Viney and the other team keeps their pick in the draft.

Posted

it would be extremely interesting if another team passes up a really good player to try to get melb to use there first pick on Jack, and then the dees end up not taking jack and opt to take the other player instead

Posted

I think that would be unlikely.

However if we have a stinker of a year and end up in the bottom 5 or so, meaning another team would have to use a very early pick to outbid us it could be interesting.

Posted

So what happens after the club below us picks Jack, they pick again?

Nominations for Father/Son players, is held just prior to trade week I think, so a club that wanted to make a bid for young Viney to force us to use our 1st pick, would have to offer their earlier pick at that meeting.

We would then commit to using our earliest pick to take him, stopping us from trading it away before the Draft.

Then Trade Week begins.

But, If, god forbid, Viney was injured, then that may make a different scenario.

Assuming Viney doesnt get further injuries it is a fairly "riskless" move to offer up a first round pick for Viney.

Best case for bidding club: They get Viney who is a top ten pick

Worst case: They force us to use a first round pick

Other clubs would be crazy not to force our hand.

Wouldnt this scenario call for us to trade our first round picks before the draft (if that is possible) so that our next pick after a clubs offers a first rounder is a second round or even third round. Or have I missed something. Seems like a great incentive for us to trade furiously our early picks for players then pay a later pick for Viney to me...

You missed something - trade week is held immediately AFTER the father-son bidding, so a pick can't be traded out beforehand.

It is a long long way out, but to put it all in perspective as to what picks people have been asking we will need to use on this kid.

Knightmare my favourite Phantom draft expert got asked to start his 2012 one already.

Viney ranked at 4th, but this is with O'Meara in it, so top 3 at this time of year.

Better than Crouch who was drafted 2 in the GWS mini draft!!!

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=901363

All early but he looks like one of the best kids in the upcoming draft if nothing else.

"CONTRACTED juniors Jaeger O'Meara and Brad Crouch have been given permission to play for their respective clubs in the 2012 NAB Cup, following requests from Gold Coast and Adelaide"

IS Jack ready to go or is he still recovering from his injury?

Posted

He has OP. As much as i'd like to see him have a go in the NAB Cup, I'd much much prefer to have him 100% fit when the real stuff starts next year.

He has mild OP and is being eased into training to build up his workload over the next year.

Even though we have committed to drafting him, he hasnt actually been drafted yet, so there is zero chance he will play in the NAB since he isnt listed at an AFL club yet!

We have permission from the AFL for him to train with us and play VFL next year if he wishes.

I dont know if it is worth its own thread but, the eagles are starting a father son academy,

getting them all in to give them advice, training ect

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/eagle-keep-sons-of-champs-in-nest/story-e6frf9jf-1226258715166

This is what it has become, develop talent which is yours, like soccer ect, if you can turn more father sons into better draft picks and players earlier its a huge WIN

I dont know how much longer the AFL will do this...maybe ages maybe not, but it does compromise the draft and some clubs benefit more than others

We dont have an academy,we are obviously on top of Viney once we committed, but can we gain more from others?

Wow, I must be getting too old. I have never in my life said that a woman with a hot body has a "good frame". It actually doesn't make much sense when you think about it.

If that made you cringe KIL, I think you better lock yourself in your room, with no computer access whatsoever.

Replying to an old comment here, but I agree. I'd never heard the "good frame" thing when describing women either. Weird.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
