Pretty much sums up what he'd said in previous interviews in the media. Good to see he has no plans of just wallowing at Casey and will be working towards playing seniors. Once he gets some continuity through the NAB cup and the start of the VFL season then i see no reason why he won't play in the AFL either...as many have said, little downside to this choice but a huge potential upside.

I would back he and Nicholson to be the promoted rookies at the start of the season.

At the moment there is room to promote only one rookie (by way of 1 spare VL slot)

Are you predicting a LTI by the start of the season?

Posted

I would.

History shows it is more than likely that we'll experience at least one before the beginning of the season.

I thought we had 2 spots available because we have no one on th VL?

If Campbell is good to go, perhaps there is a greater chance of a spot opening up through a "LTI"... or am I way off the mark?

Leave the spot available to later on.

Brad Green is on the VL.

One vet means that a rookie can play Rd 1 without an LTI.

After Rd 11 another rookie can play without an LTI.

Thanks for that. I was under the assumption he wasn't yet...

I think it will be out of Campbell and Nicholson at the start of the year with a leaning towards Campbell and then Nicho after rd 11 barring an LTI earlier...

What is the story with all the rules about list numbers being broken into veterans, rookies, etc?

Why can't teams simply be limited to a certain number of players and that's that?

Thems the rules.

There is actually talk at the moment to remove the rookie list and make them senior listed players...

Because you can have a rookie on $30k a year whereas the minimum is around $65k (ish).

And, yeah, it is a little counter intuitive. And they are having a chat as Ox said, about getting rid of the RL.

Although the VL is good one as it keeps the older players in the game longer. As half the salary of two 10 year players can be paid outside the cap.

Assuming they sign the contract.... (I would put an emoticon here but I don't use emoticons)

But there are so many to choose from...your favorite would probably suit it. What do you think?

I think because of the player senior list & the corresponding salary cap. The rookies are paid much less. This opens the door for those rookies, who are largely considered bigger risks & longer term Project players. It's a good recipe.

My understanding is that rookies are paid $45K pa plus $2900 per senior game played. If Campbell played 22 games he would receive $45000 + $63800 = $108800. (Amongst the lowest paid senior footballers) If a rookie listed player does not play a senior game he has busted a gut for about 44 weeks, watched his diet, done his rehab etc for $45K. Not a great hourly rate!

I would happily take $45k if I could do something I loved day in day out for a living. Whilst living a childhood dream in the process.

Love your attitude and I wish I could find employees like you! (Unfortunately one catch is that I can't offer you an afl career ...)

If it isn't AFL I am not taking 45k. Sorry demonski!

you're having a laugh surely, 45K for about 2 hours 'work' per day, if you call running around kicking a footy 'work'..

have a feeling there is just a little bit more to it than this...

I'd like to see a change to the name of the "Rookie List" and "Rookie Draft" to something different in the next couple of years, with the new mature-age rules. Mature-aged recruits like Robbie Campbell or Brad Miller at Richmond shouldn't really be referred to as rookies (in the true sense of the word), when they are among the most experienced players at their respective clubs. Perhaps a return to the old "Supplementary List" naming and a "Supplementary Draft" might be more fitting?

When the rookie list was invented, it was intended to be a place outside the senior list for clubs to draft and develop smokey picks aged under 21 (i think but happy to be corrected?) who had no prior experience at AFL level. Now that there is no age or games-played limit on the RL the word "rookie" doesn't really apply.

Posted

I think Robbie will turn out to be the bargain of the draft and I wouldn't be surprised to see him play up to 15 games next year. Perhaps a few weeks at casey to get him match fit first.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
