I'd be happy if we can acquire Jackson Sketcher or Brad Harvey.

The former joint-winner of the TAC Cup league b&f and captain of sandringham.

The latter an athletic freak who tested exceptionally well at the Combine.

Callum Sinclair might still be handy judging by other peoples ratings of him. I've barely seen him.

Anton Hamp, Josh Walker, Zac Fitzgerald, Matthew Rankine, Jordan Eades, Kyle Hartigan, Max Otten, Justin Monaco, Tom

Gordon, Tyler Chalwell, Kieran Butcher, Andrew Phillips, Orren Stephenson, Jonathon Giles, James Orr, Brandyn Grenfel, Myles Sewell, Stephen Clifton...

A lot of familiar names in there.

I don't necessarily know a lot about many of them though.

Slightly exaggerating GM?

EFL Div 2 - not a bad effort. I wonder why he doesn't play at a higher level (Div 1 or VFL). Do you know him GM? If so, does he just prefer the local club environment?

Obviously you didn't read the article I posted.

He played in the VAFA and won the league Best and Fairest when he was there.

Then he went into Division 1 EFL and won the league best and fairest each year he was playing, except for one where he did his shoulder.

Then, as you know, he won the league best and fairest in division 2.

I know that AFL is alot faster and more skilled then the EFL, but, IMO, Bernie Dinneen, at his best, was unbeatable.

I would have him over certain players on our list right now.

Few names on that list that interested me as rookies.

Riley Heddles, teriffic work rate on the kid and excellent footy smarts. A natural leader too. Played alot of junior footy with Scully when they both played for Berwick together and then also at the Stingrays together.

Max Otten, Andy Otten's younger brother. No other reason really.

Jarred Atkinson, so quick. Could be anything.

They all have thier downsides too, but it's a rookie draft, it's about taking punts.

I want to know this too. I said I was in favour of delisting him at the end of season and didn't get a lot of support, but my criteria for retention is pretty simple: can this player be part of our best side? I don't see whose position in the side he contending for, so he's gone. I wouldn't bother rookie listing him either.

Usually the answer was "but he showed some potential in a couple of games in 2009". Whoop-de-doo.

I don't think the club would bother having him do pre-season with us if they weren't at least entertaining the thought of putting him on the rookie list.

Given how deep the picks went in this year's draft, coupled with GWS and GC once again demolishing the rookie draft, I would think that it's better the devil you know. McNamara has more of a chance of making it than the 97th player picked in this year's rookie draft (and more of a chance of making it than Newton). He was a bottom age KPP picked in a relatively good draft afterall.

Just saw a list of the players that have permission to train with melbourne.

Corey Buchan (Dandenong Stingrays), Corey Cassidy (Oakleigh Chargers), Brad Harvey (Eastern Ranges), Paul Johnson (Melbourne), Cameron Johnston (Geelong Falcons), Alex McLeod (Calder Cannons), Tom McNamara (Melbourne)

Interesting to see big PJ there!

Does anyone know much about some of the blokes named?

All but Cassidy are in the list above (bolded in my post quote) and all are mids/small forwards (excluding PJ and TMac)

Suppose I would like to see us break our six spots up and chase "2 types" for each category

a/ 1 x Ruckman/ 1 x Ready to Go - 1 senior/ ready made ie Giles, Skipper, Paul Johnson type - 1 junior developing - Like Andrew Philips, Sinclair maybe even Broc McCauley, I would include player like T Mac & Michael Still in this category.

b/ Running Types - 2 out of this list sounds fine - Corey Buchan (Dandenong Stingrays), Corey Cassidy (Oakleigh Chargers), Brad Harvey (Eastern Ranges), Cameron Johnston (Geelong Falcons), Alex McLeod (Calder Cannons) plus maybe even a BP "smokey"

c/ 2 x-factor or indigenous kids -

Ultimately if you picked up 1-2 players that could take the next step onto your senior list ... you would have to regard that as an outstanding job.

IMHO this is where professional AFL drafters really earn their money. IMHO this is the true test of a drafting team. IMHO good smart rookie selections are almost like "bonus" players that every successful club needs to make that small 1% difference that can give you the edge when it counts.

I really thought you were gonna go with 2 x mids, 2 x defenders & 2 x forwards (inc. ready-made ruck/fwds)

I don't see the point in recruiting a ruckman that can't also play forward.

I know we won't be spoilt for choice, but I think it's worth sticking with that.

Never have I seen such emphasis put on a rookie draft. So many promising players have come form this draft format, and it is finally getting the attention it deserves.

With 90 odd selections to be made, we may end up with a handful of guys on our permission to train list. As for smokeys, I can see the dees getting one on the rookie list.

For some reason I think PJ will be retained on the rookie list with the last rookie pick if he has not found a home elsewhere. Tommy Mac might also be in the same boat.

I think the dees will mix up the picks a bit. I think they will go for your "hyrbid" type players that can play mid or down back/front. I can't see them going for too many bigs considering our draft stock being all above 190cm.

I usually have an idea of how teams will approach a draft, but I was certainly wrong about the ND this year and would not put a single dollar on who the dees will pick in the rookie draft.

Irrespective of whether they are 1yr or 2yr contracts I still think you have made an interesting point Forge.

We may try to strike a balance here. You'd think that unless a rookie was absolutely terrible they would probably be given another year simply for development anyway so it means we may needlessly end up comitting to too many unlikely prospects if we go too deep. Possibly at the expence of 1 or more promising rookies the following year. We have 6 spots, I don't know if there is a minimum requirement but perhaps we may fill about 4 of those spots as a guess.

From club email

Jack Viney joins Melbourne, along with four new draftees

Melbourne has had a big week, with the announcement of Jack Viney - son of Club great Todd - pledging his allegiance to Melbourne, on top of the Club's drafting of Lucas Cook, Jeremy Howe, Troy Davis and Tom McDonald in the AFL National Draft.

Viney, 16, has been secured via the father/son rule, and will officially be selected in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft. He will be eligible to play for Melbourne in 2013.

Last Thursday night on the Gold Coast, the Demons added Cook (selection No.12), Howe (No.33), Davis (No.50) and McDonald (No.53) via the NAB AFL Draft.

The Demons now have a full senior list, and will add six more players to their rookie list on December 7.

We have six more picks in the rookie draft and it should be a lot more interesting that last year when we regurgitated Juice Newton and John Meesen.

.....and Healey and Hughes don't forget.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
