Of course he's good enough Todd, just sign him up already.

I believe Jack's with the AIS squad who are traveling as a group to Europe in April next year.

Meanwhile, Todd is showing the right attitude as a parent. His son is still only 16 and there's really no need to add extra pressure on his son's shoulders. Let's all demonstrate the same patience and let him develop into the club's third Viney in the fullness of time.

Yes I know.

Good on Todd for having that attitude and not talking about him like he's already there.

It'll make for a much quieter post season round here in 2012. Imagine the bulldogs boards now, "who,ll we get with pick 50 something" or whatever their first live pick is.

.....another Jack. We don't have enough.......

  • 2 weeks later...

Just been doing a bit of reading and thinking on the Jack Viney topic...

He is eligible for the draft in 2012...

But we may be able to get him in 2011.

I've not checked the dates and his DOB so it might be all moot, but...

The way Adelaide was hoping to snaffle Jack may be an option for us.

GWS can select 4 x 17 year olds next year, and then must trade them to other clubs.

If Viney was able to stipulate that he only accepts provided he comes to us, we may be able to get him a year early and, depending on what GWS want in return, we may be able to get him cheaper, as with the F/S rule we will certainly have to use our 1st round pick in the first non-compromised draft in 2 years (meaning a pick at 16 or earlier).

Obviously they can only do it with 4 kids, so it depends on what designs other clubs have, but we will likely have later draft picks to offer (due to the Giants' picks).

We may end up being able to get Viney for a player who is still good but has become surplus to needs like (just an example) Bate, instead of giving up an early pick the next year.

There's also the possibility that we may (probably will) have a compensation pick.

It's bound to happen at some stage.

Depending on what other clubs offer, we may be able to do it cheap because the GWS would accept less as they are essentially getting something for nothing.

Sorry about the long rambling post, it's late at night & I'm exhausted from a big run earlier.

But does this all sound plausible?

Or am I horribly confused on this one?

That's not bad thinking E25. But look a little further, I reckon it depends on where Viney is rated. Let's say we end up something like 8th next season. We'd end up with a pick in the late teens as our first... Getting a kid that's rated in the top 5 or 10 in place of a pick around the late teens is still a steal. Also, when you consider what we'd have to give up to GET a a kid rated in the top ten... it'd have to be a good/great player with some years left, plus probably a pick somewhere, it may end up working out against us.

Interesting post though. Clearly you have too much time on your hands. :D

I would like to see the dees trade their first round pick next year for an up and coming player. For example, move our first pick to a gold coast for a Lynch type, then the earliest pick we can be forced to use for Jack Viney will be a second rounder. We then come out with 2 very nice quality players. The aim would be to find a young and talented enough target worth giving up a first rounder for, and of course a trading partner who is willing to give up a kid for a first rounder.

Not sure on the trading rules, but we could perhaps even look into a trade that sends our 1st and 6th rounder, a player for another teams 2 and 3 rounder, which then gives us more picks in the top 50 to play with.

I may be wrong on this, but I am pretty certain Father/Son Selections are decided before trade week..probably to avoid teams doing this sort of thing.

Don't think that would be possible as father son picks are announced before any trading is done on day 1.....

E25, I think in theory this would work (JV is in the correct 4 month period)

However you claim two benefits

1. Get him for a cheaper draft pick. e.g. 2nd round versus 1st round. GWS might go for this cos if he is F/Sed they get nothing. But it depends what other clubs might offer for GWS to prebook a 17YO.

2. Get him a year earlier. I don't think this works. GWS prebook him in 2011 but I think only hand him over for MFC drafting in 2012. If you just mean we get him "wrapped" up a year earlier then we can still do this if JW is prepared to pre-nomonate for F/S in 2011 (before GWS 17yo prenomination) but again he doesn't get officially drafted till 2012.

So, assuming JW, MFC and GWS can all come to agreement (big if) we could get JW wrapped up for a lower pick sacrifice only.

I think!!

Any ideas - obviously its new player show off time, its also profit/loss reporting time. I don't think there is anything to report in regard to football department signings. Would love a nice juicy sponsorship deal!

I certainly hope it goes along those lines, and not that Jim has had another setback :S

No, I think we'd get him a year early, as a 17 year old, just as GC have Weller, Russell & McKenzie, and GWS have Shiels, Bugg and Treloar.

I concede that the chances of getting him "cheap" are entirely dependent on what other clubs offer, and considering there would likely be other players on offer rated similarly to the above names, that is unlikely.

The whole thing centres around the fact that what we have to pay through F/S is a relatively known quantity (a 1st round pick) and through negotiation we may be able to get a better deal. This could mean a pick that is 8 spots later, or it could mean instead giving up a decent player who cannot squeeze into our side, as I anticipate there will be a couple.

I just think it's worth seriously considering as an option, but as Blistering pointed out, it already has been.

I just missed it.

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had
