Is there any reason why we couldn't use the new rule for our own benefit by coming to an arrangement with both Jack Viney and GWS to get young Jack to the MFC twelve months earlier than otherwise?

As things stood, we would have been required to wait until the 2012 national draft to get young Jack as a f/s at the cost of our first pick in the next uncompromised draft.

Under the new rule, we would have to trade a player to GWS but would get Viney to the club at the end of next year and keep 2012 pick 1.

Might be worth considering?

Good thinking Jack.

A friend of mine and jacks asked Jack about the crows last night and if he would be forgetting about going to melbourne, i then pointed out reasons why there would be no chance of him choosing the crows over the demons and Jack replied it was the first he had heard about it. So obviously Todd doesn't even think its something worth mentioning to Jack. He will be a demon!!!!!

Jack, I might be wrong, but I seem to remember a thread recently on this subject which implied he would be available in the 2011 Draft by his birthday just falling into the range. He would be in the "younger age" category which is not compromised in 2011.

May have got this wrong but someone here probably knows the correct rules, date cutoffs, birthdays etc

Turns18 in 2012 so that would be the draft in which he first qualifies.

The new rule seems to make him accessible to GWS as a17 y.o.

The rule hasn't been approved by the AFL yet.

Couldn't he also be chosen by GWS as one of their 17 year olds that they keep..?

Not if he elects to come to Melbourne via the father-son rule. That takes precedence. That's my understanding of it?

If he doesn't wish to come to Melbourne, that's when GWS can swoop and take him as one of four 17 year olds.

I asked David Neitz about JV at the BF. He said If he's good enough he'll be playing for Melbourne.

Haha. If he's good enough...

No, the four 17 years olds are to be taken by clubs other than GWS.

GWS themselves are able to pre-select 12 x 17 year olds like the GC Suns did LAST year (Keath, Matera, Weller, Russell, etc.)

BUT

GWS18 will be doing that THIS year, so that rules JV out as he is not yet 17.

The picks to be on-traded to OTHER clubs for 17 year olds are for NEXT year.

And this is not set in stone as the rules haven't been signed off by the AFL yet anyway.

... Why does the AFL make this all so confusing?

He either chooses to join a midfield probably a year off peaking with Scully, Trengove, Gysberts, Sylvia, McKenzie etc. etc.

Or puts his hat in the ring and quite possibly could go to a team 3 or 4 years off.

It comes down to a footballing decision nothing else...The only worry would be if Adelaide finished 18th.

Joel Selwood - First 3 seasons, 3 Grand Finals, 2 Premierships - could quite possibly play in 4 grand finals in 4 years

Why would any AFL player pass up an opportunity to join a club just about to hit their stride?

Assuming he wants to stay in Adelaide.

And I find it inconceivable that he would.

I do not think player these days want to stay in their home states just so they can be close to family & friends, Trengove & Tapscott from last years draft as current examples... It is not as is JV is a 10yo.

If JV does his homework on both clubs, he would quickly see MFC are on the ascendancy (big chance of a flag in the next 5ish years) & Adelaide are cleaning out their list and commencing a rebuild... (oh, and MFC have decent training facilities now!!)

The MFC club is going to be a desirable destination from this draft forward. We are touted as the next "dynasty" of the AFL.

Jack Viney knows the red (& blue) carpet has been rolled out here for him. He will have known about the father son since he was about 10 yeats old. Playing for the Demons would have crossed him mind before playing for any other club.

If he plays in Adelaide, then I wish Todd's boy luck. If we wants to a part of the MFC legacy, one his father started, then he will indeed become a Demon.

No point stressing, we have to go to the draft table this season and get it right before we start worrying about future drafts.

I think daisycutter was talking about my post. Is it incorrect?

Yeah, just done some research (apologies to those who know this)

Firstly Jack Viney's birthday is 13.4.94 (incidentally at June 2009 he was 164cm and 69Kg, obviously already bigger by now)

So, he is 16 this year 17 in 2011 year (and before April 30) and 18 in 2012

OLD DRAFT TILL 2008

Players had to be at least 17 by April 30 in year of draft (e.g. hence Watts)

DRAFT SINCE 2009

4 months added to min age, so that now must 18 by Dec 31 in year of draft

This is a permanent change and nothing to do with new franchises

SPECIAL TEMPORARY RULES for GC17 and GWS

Starting from 2009 Draft players who reach 17 in the 4 months of Jan thru April of the draft year can be selected

There are varopus separate rules for GWS and GC17 but I won't go into the details here

PROPOSED SPECIAL RULE for GWS (NOT APPROVED YET BY AFL)

Allow GWS to select 4 17 year olds (turning 17 in Jan thru April) to be selected in 2011 Draft. They must then be traded the next year to the highest bidders.

So,

1. Jack not eligible for Drafting (normally) till 2012 when he turns 18

2. His status unclear re Proposed Special GWS Rule. He does fit into the age 17 by April 30 bracket in 2011

Can't see it happening as it would bypass the Father Son rules, but lets wait for AFL clarification

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
