Was the free kick paid against Jack Grimes in front of goal in the third quarter, for holding the ball, the worst decision ever, or just this year?

Nope. The OOF that came off Martin's (IIRC) knee that we got was a howler. Still I'll take it.

What about when Bennell took that mark and wasn't paid because he 'bumped' the lions guy

That was a shocker!! There were other bad ones but that was potentially the most costly of the game for sure.

Jack had NO chance of getting rid of the ball.

The commentators were all saying the same thing. The stupid ump had no idea - how could you even try and hit it out with your arm pinned to the ground??

It was a shocker, the Martin on-the-full was a disgrace as well - the other way.

Ever!

Yep, Ever. The Martin decision was unsighted, so forgiveable, but there was no precedent either this game or any this year for the Grimes decision. Taking the ball on, no prior opportunity, and ridden into the ground from behind. All in full sight of the umpire. Inexplicable!!!

Agreed a shocking decision, but you can't just lay there, you must a least go through the motions of trying to get rid of the ball, even if a big oaf like Fev is on top of you grinding you into the turf.

Umpires make these sort of mistakes all the time. I have seen it in alot of games, don't think it's something that is only reserved for us. On another note, anybody still noticing how having the louder crowd helps?

I think you'll find the umpire paid the decision for the tackle, i.e. before there was any attempt to get rid of it, thus somehow deemed prior opportunity!

Martin decision more than made up for by the Bennell out of bounds decision (3rd Quarter), as he was about to run into an open goal. I had perfect line of sight on it, and it wasn't out of bounds, not even close! The boundary umpire did not have line of sight, so it was a guess, but I guess to be fair a lot of boundary decisions are.

Brennan also got pinged for holding the ball when he was barely tackled.

The oof one was terrible! They were guessing all night the boundary umpires!

Saw that one again on Channel 7 this morning. Brennan did his one hand pick-up thing, DEFINITELY had possession. Just couldn't get his foot or other hand around to make contact and the ball just lamely dropped out.

The boundary umpires struggled to keep up with the pace, didn't they?!

Bad decisions are only important if they happen at significant times or in significant places. Grimes was stiff. It had the potential to turn the game. Dees were also very stiff with a couple of 'holding the ball' decisions that could have gone against the Lions.

Correct. As Grimes was falling to the ground with Fev in his back the umpire paid the free. Grimes had just picked up the ball and had not even stood up, he was still hunched down when tackled. Along with the TV commentators who i heard when I got home, I agree it was disgraceful. The umpire was number 24 Jennings. That was one of a number of shockers by him, including taking a great mark off Bennell close to goal. It may have been his first game. He was given the ball to carry off at the end and the two boundary umpires ran to him as soon as the siren sounded.

If it was his first game I don't want to destroy his umpiring career, I actually think he did it himself last night. That was the worst display by an umpire in a senior match that I can recall. I am glad it didn't cost us the game. In my opinion he could have been involved in 20 incorrect decisions throughout the night.

Anyway, enough of umpire bashing, more importantly we played fantastic footy and we won and the boys were great.

Umpire Jennings. I'd never heard of him until last night. Must be a rookie/new umpire or something.

He was responsible for the Grimes HTB, possibly the worst HTB decision I've seen in a long time. Absolutely terrible decision.

He was also responsible for the Bennell in the back, which was again an awful decision. That 'bump', if there was enough contact for it to be considered a bump, was to the side of the player. Nothing illegal about it.

I believe he may have also been responsible for the decision to pay in the back against McDonald, which was clearly not in the back, but rather it was holding the ball (that might have been another umpire, don't know).

Just terrible stuff. Really, all 3 of them were off their game last night.

Hopefully as we improve we'll begin to get the better umpires instead of (possibly) rookies.

Edit: And the Martin OOF: horrible. Surely in moments of doubt they should just throw it in?

I'm actually ashamed of the way I went off at that decision last night (the F word was flying freely). Apologies for anyone who has to sit around me at the footy. I'm insufferable at the best of the times, but that nearly pushed me over the edge.

DISGUSTING decision, and against my boy Jack too!

I can be an embarrassment to sit near also, to myself and others, but that decision was so bad, the abuse just failed to come. As George on Seinfeld would have it, 'I was speechless, I had no speech'.

The Grimes one was a disgrace, but Benellys was just as bad. This was text book perfect by Bennell on how you should outmuscle an opponent to mark the ball. No sign of hands and his bump was clearly not even in his back, but his side.

There were howlers for both sides, we just seem to get them right in front of goal!

The Martin one was right in front of the boundary umpire! He's in big trouble for that one. You cannot be 10 mts from the play and make such poor decisions! Especially when you consider Goods was 2mts behind Stef. Boundary will spend a long time at VFL.

Jennings looked like a blonde Screech!!! There should also be an enquiry into Hayden Kennedy's "preformance" last night.

I thought the Jamie Bennell decision was far worse. What did he do wrong? Nothing, it was Text Book effective.

As i recall the Bears scored on the rebound-i can't quite recall as i was still yelling abuse!!!

The umpiring alnight was woeful. Just ask James Strauss what prior op means !!
