With Morton, LJ and Bell injured for several weeks and with Gawn, Tapscott and PJ longer term there is room to uplift several rookies. However I can only see Spencer, McKenzie, Newton and Hughes as possibles. Meesen is injured and Healey hasn't shown anything yet and I think is also injured. That means that we will be playing with a reduced list for some time and that is without any more injuries. Interesting situation at the beginning of a season.

Yep it will be interesting. There may well be 4 LTI`s.I don`t think Hughes has done enough to be promoted but he might get a gig by default. Ditto Newton if LJ is out long term. McKenzie is a given I`d have thought, he seems to be having a real crack. Spencer simply must be promoted because martin can`t cope in the ruck this early in his career

Posted

Spencer and McKenzie will both be promoted. Both deserve it, and frankly, we need Spencer badly. Playing him for an extended time in the seniors can only help him.

As for the rest, Meesen and Healy are injured, Newton is a dud, and Hughes hasn't shown enough at Casey to suggest he'd make it at AFL level.

I guess this means more gametime for players like Dunn and Bartram.

Posted

Rookies should only be elevated to the senior list if they are likely to play AFL and not before then unless its Newton where its financial neutral. I wouldnt elevate Newton until he shows he is ready to compete at AFL level.

Posted

Precisely. Realistically only Cale & Liam are in our Best 22 from that list so it's not as if we're massively depleted all of a sudden. Rookie upgrades are on a needs only basis, not automatic if there's an injury.

Posted

McKenzie and Spencer definite rookie elevations IMO

Mckenzie to replace Tapscott Spencer for Gawn/Meesen. I have liked what

I've seen from both Spencer has shown improvement from last year he still has miles

to go and i think McKenzie will be a decent player.

I agree that Spencer & McKenzie will step up- Gawn will not play for at least 8 weeks from now and Tapscott - who knows.McKenzie, has a bright future and he could tag, play small back, ruck rove- whatever. And we need Spencer in the ruck with Jamar forward and second ruck.

Posted

After hearing about McKenzie over the last couple of games it would be difficult to not promote him. Give him as many games as his body can handle.

Posted

I thought McKenzie was solid during the Intra Club match and has been ok during the preseason. He seems destine for a senior spot anyway, so a promotion is just a matter of signing some papers.

Spencer is a must given that we have so few fit talls. Even if we have to slot him in at FF, he is a fit player who is craving some game time.

At this point, even Hughes could get a run with the number of injuries we have.

Posted

Realistically, we can promote three Rookies right from the start. We have Gawn, Bell and Tapscott who are all going to be injured long enough (in theory) to go on the LTI. I don't know what the verdict will be on Morton. I think McKenzie and Spencer are the obvious choices, McKenzie because he's ready and Spencer because we need another ruck. Despite his poor performances and form, I'd like to see Newton upgraded as well, just because he gives our forward line a better shape. Even if he was cruising along at 1 goal a game, he'd be worth it if he took one of the best defenders away and let our other forwards have more freedom.

Dew to some very unfortunate injury's :( , for the MFC. There may be some space on the list, for a few rookie promotions.

My top three rookies for promotion would be

Jodie McKenzie

Jake Spencer

Micheal Newton

I think two of those names will be promoted. We've got a few LTI's

Jordie Mac will definitely be promoted.

McKenzie and Spencer both before Newton, McKenzie definitely deserves to be

I think the clubs plan has always been to promote McKenzie & Spencer at the earliest opportunity. I agree with both of these boys promotions.

I wouldn't mind waiting a few weeks re Newton before seeing how we fill the forward roles & how the team functions.

It may also be worth a look at Hughes for a short while, just to see how that goes re him or Newton. Time will tell.

What long term injuries do we have? Gawn, Jurrah and Bell (i think he qualifies)... If that's the case, then I think all 3 will be considered for promotion... At the end of the day though, I don't think any of these players will be upgraded until they're considered to be in the best 22 for that week of footy... That's the way it has always been in the past...

And to be honest, I think purely on a structural level, I think we're going to need Newton to be in our best 22... Even if he doesn't do much, we need some sort of target in our forward line. He would offer a better target than Stef, and allow Miller and Bate to play to their more suited positions across the half forward line...

Without Jurrah, who is going to play full forward? Miller? I'm sure Juice can do a better job...

I'd say Morton's injury qualifies him, for the long term injury list.

45hg16? I'm up for a game in the red and blue.

Seriously though, no one should be promoted unless they are being put into the 22 that week. A possible exception would Jordie because of the circumstances that saw him on the RL, but he would possibly be in the 22 anyway.

Posted

McKenzie is most ready to have an impact - he looked very effective against Ess and if anyone is going up it's him to work through the midfield rotations.

Newton probably not ever. Spencer is less likely if Martin continues to impress and Jamar stays unhurt.

Posted

Don't Forget Tapscott is on the long term injurie list and not too sure on PJ, Why do we have players like Hughes & Healey still be on our Rookie list if they are not up to standard, not 100% sure we are using this system to our full potential yet. Apart from the obvious ones like Davey.

Don't Quote me but our LTI could look something like this

LJ

M. Gawn

L. Tapscott

C. Morton (if he qualifies)

PJ (if he qualifies)

D. Bell (if he qualifies)

I would safely say that thats a min of 4 players on the LTI, J. Meeson is on the LTI himself so he cant be promoted so that leaves Hughes, Mckenzie, Spencer, Healey and Newton who can and may all be promoted. Hughes, Healey and Newton havn't shown alot to push for promotion. My question is why re-rookie players if they don't really look like becoming AFL players. Or do i just not know enough about these players??

Posted

Surely promotion from the Rookie List is all about:

(1) earning a promotion; and

(2) the needs of the senior team.

From what I've seen and read through the pre-season so far, Jordie McKenzie clearly satisfies both of these criteria, and Jake Spencer could qualify, especially if the intention is to play either the Russian or Stef Martin primarily as a key forward. But it seems to me that none of the other rookies have done enough to warrant elevation. Of course, there are still a couple of weeks of pre-season remaining, but IMO they will need to make a huge impression in the time remaining to be given serious thought for the early rounds.

For round 1 - McKenzie & Spencer = Yes.

For the others it really depends what happens in the next couple of weeks. With LJ injured and Robbo gone, we are screaming out for a marking forward. Do you play Bate, Miller or Green from the goalsquare or all of them at various stages of a game?

Memo to Michael Newton: This week would be the best time to play the game of your life and kick a bag of goals.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
